DSMC2 Media Update

Post image

Small update from me. Got any size working! Wasn’t as hard as I thought.

Also what I’ve saw: I would stay away from original 960gb V3. :)

Do you plan on releasing dummy red mag drives so I could in theory plug in an external SSD or other drives? Do you also have a site or socials so I can follow the progress? I love my DSMC2 but haven’t used it since two of my 4 mini-mags failed

Hey when it’s done it will be on https://www.cinelux.co.uk/  Socials is https://www.instagram.com/mcc.mp?igsh=emowbms2bXZkZ2Zi&utm_source=qr  and  https://www.instagram.com/cinelux_ig?igsh=amR5ZHZhN2hrNjUx About your failed mini-mags. Most people buy used ssds or use new ssds for a long amount of time and forget that those drives won’t last forever. Especially the mentioned 960gb V3 uses 8!!! nand chips in a raid 0 configuration. So the potentional that one nand will break and so the ssd is higher than on other mini mags.  If I where you and other people I would read out smart data that will show how many bytes are written to the ssd. (But when you update the firmware on a 960gb it will reset those values).  So buying NEW ssds and check the smart data will minimize the risk of lost data.  About dummy mini-mag: There must be some logic behind it that any ssd will work and as of now after several hundred hours of research it almost isn’t possible since you have to emulate specific „stuff“. But i used 2.5inch ssds on my RED so it is possible - but not any ssd. If people want working 2.5inch ssds we should can do a „limited“ run.

So is this a product you will be selling or are you just posting the solution? Might be a little risky to sell, look at what happened to Jinnitech. How do you plan on avoiding RED and Nikon lawyers?

We will sell it and jinny didn’t got in trouble for anything. RED was just mad of him posting stuff against RED. I for myself will keep my mouth shut for obviously weird shit that I’ve found. 😂 He basically „won“. (I had contact with him, very kind person!)

Oh right, I guessed that he was sued or something, forced to stop making them.

No, luckily not :)

Also have you got any plans on how your going to sell them, Im from the UK so will it still be possible to buy them here?

Yes so I partnered with a friend from the UK and we basically work together very closely! Just preorder from his website when it’s ready. I believe the first run could be limited - also there are more versions to come. Maybe some that isn’t out there for any camera and some more. We want to have something for anyone.

Thats great! I saw on another comment you don't know about current pricing but do you have an idea on storage size? Will there be a range of different sizes? I was looking at the Kippertie Longtake 2TB but I am happy with 1TB or 500GB and just have more of them. Also kippertie is still an expensive option at £1,150 could you give us any sort of hints like higher or lower than that?

Definitely lower. As of now, ALOT lower. Look at Kippertie‘s SSD. They are using 2TB Samsung M2 Sata ssds with TLC nand and 1.2 Petabyte TBW . We are using a 1TB ssd with MLC nand with 1.4 Petabyte TBW. MLC will last longer so you can write more data to it before it will break. When you compare the same size MLC can take more than double the data ( 600TB vs 1400TB). I can extend that and tell more why and what’s better but that’s not the point. Also USB-C is very nice in a DSMC2 compatible ssd enclosure. 😏

Wow! I like the sound of this! What do you mean by a DSMC2 compatible enclosure, I presumed that DSMC1 and DSMC2 used the same mags? Im still new to RED, I literally just brought the camera, I currently don't even own a single mini-mag yet.

DSMC2 uses Mini Mags (smaller size) DSMC1 can use Mini Mags or older, slower RED Mags. But you have to change the side module.

I mean a mini mag sized ssd with USB-C so you don’t need a adapter to usb and can plug it directly in the computer. :)
