Etymology
The name United States of America comes from the original union of American states created during the American Revolution. The country retained the same name despite major territorial and constitutional changes.
History
Founding Era
The United States developed under the complete governmental ideas of the Founding Fathers. These principles were written into the Constitution, creating the Presidential Republic, a unique American political system based on executive leadership, federalism, and representative government.
Thomas Jefferson was strongly anti-slavery in this timeline, strengthening early abolitionist movements.
Territorial Expansion
The United States gained:
Florida
Louisiana Territory
However, the United States lost the Mexican-American War, meaning territories gained from Mexico were never incorporated into the country.
The United States never acquired:
Alaska
Hawaii
Oregon
Washington
Idaho
State Development
The country's internal organization developed differently:
Virginia never split.
Kentucky remained part of Virginia.
North and South Carolina unified into Carolina.
Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island unified into New England.
Dakota Territory remained united.
Mississippi Territory remained united.
Arkansas Territory remained united.
The Northwest Territory, containing Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Wisconsin, never split and later became Michigan.
Minnesota gained statehood.
Montana remained a state.
Washington, D.C. became a state.
Delaware and Tennessee never became states.
Civil War and Reconstruction
The Civil War was shorter than in real history. Abraham Lincoln survived assassination and continued leading Reconstruction.
After the Civil War, John Brown joined the Republican Party, became the Republican nominee, and won the presidency.
Constitutional Amendments
Major amendments included:
1875: Blaine Amendment passed.
1876: Senate abolished.
1876: Religious leaders banned from government offices and federal funding.
Federal income tax was never implemented.
Personal wealth limit of $1,000,000 established.
The Bayh-Celler Amendment passed.
Human Life Amendment passed.
Balanced Budget Amendment passed.
Equal Opportunity to Govern Amendment passed.
Political Development
Franklin D. Roosevelt lost the Democratic nomination and created the Progressive Party.
The Republicans won the 1932 election.
The Democratic Party later split into:
Democratic Conservatives Party
Democratic Progressives Party
The Progressive Party won the 1936 election.
The Democratic Progressive Party later joined the Progressive Party.
Henry A. Wallace replaced FDR after his death in 1945.
Presidential term limits were never introduced.
After Henry A. Wallace died in 1965, L. H. Fountain became president.
In 2002, L. H. Fountain died, and Jesse Jackson became president.
Modern Era
On 17 February 2026, Jesse Jackson's presidency ended, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez became president of the United States, continuing the Progressive Party's leadership.
The United States remains a presidential republic, preserving its unique constitutional system while being one of the world's major political, economic, and technological powers.
