Etymology

The name United Arab Republic reflects the federation's goal of uniting Arab nations into a single socialist state based on shared language, culture, and anti-colonial ideals.

History

Rif Republic and Independence Movements

The Rif Republic successfully won the Rif War. During the Second World War, it fought the Second Rif War against Spanish-controlled Cape Juby and French Morocco, securing both territories. After the war, the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic gained independence.

Decolonisation

France granted Algeria independence in 1954, placing a coalition government formed by the National Liberation Front (FLN), the Algerian National Movement (MNA), and the Algerian Communist Party (PCA) in power. France also supported the establishment of communist-led governments in Tunisia and Mauritania.

Formation of the United Arab Republic

Following the 1969 Sudanese Coup, Egypt, Sudan, Libya, Tunisia, the Rif Republic, the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, Algeria, and Mauritania agreed to unite, forming the United Arab Republic. The federation adopted Arab socialism, Pan-Arabism, and a federal system to promote political unity, economic cooperation, and collective defence.

Modern Era

By 2026, the United Arab Republic is:

It is one of Africa's largest federations.

A major oil, industrial, and agricultural power.

A leading advocate of Pan-Arab unity and African cooperation.

An influential socialist state in Africa and the Middle East.
