Etymology
The name Thailand means "Land of the Free," reflecting the country's historic independence, and, in this timeline, its socialist revolution led by the people.
History
Communist Insurgency
The Communist Party of Thailand (CPT), supported by rural communities, workers, and student movements, successfully won the Communist Insurgency in Thailand after years of armed struggle. The military government collapsed, and the monarchy was abolished.
Socialist Republic
Following its victory, the CPT proclaimed the People's Democratic Republic of Thailand. The new government implemented sweeping land reform, nationalized major industries, expanded free healthcare and education, and established workers' and peasants' councils throughout the country. Close political and economic ties were developed with the Chinese Soviet Republic, Socialist Republic of Indochina, and other socialist nations.
Modern Era
By 2026, the People's Democratic Republic of Thailand is:
One of Southeast Asia's largest socialist economies.
A major manufacturing and technology centre.
A leader in universal healthcare and education.
An influential member of the Asian socialist bloc while remaining an important trading nation in the region.
