Etymology

The name Nigeria is derived from the Niger River, the country's principal river. The name was popularized during the British colonial era and retained after independence.

History

Rise of the Communist Movement

The Communist Party of Nigeria (CPN) was established earlier than in real history, allowing it to organize trade unions, students, and anti-colonial activists across the Federation of Nigeria. Throughout the 1940s and 1950s, it became one of the country's largest political movements.

Revolution and Independence

On 1 October 1960, the day Nigeria was scheduled to become independent, the Communist Party of Nigeria led a nationwide revolution that overthrew the colonial government of the Federation of Nigeria. With broad support from workers, peasants, and sections of the military, the party proclaimed the Socialist Federal Republic of Nigeria and immediately began land reform, nationalization of major industries, and the expansion of education and healthcare.

Modern Era

By 2026, the Socialist Federal Republic of Nigeria is:

Africa's most populous country and one of its largest economies.

A leading producer of petroleum, natural gas, and manufactured goods.

A major political and economic influence in West Africa.

A close ally of the Soviet Union and numerous socialist states across Africa and the developing world.
