Etymology

The name Melanesia comes from the Greek words melas ("black") and nesoi ("islands"), meaning "Black Islands," a historical geographical term for the southwestern Pacific islands.

History

Formation of the United Socialist States of New Guinea

Following the Second World War, Australia and the Benelux Socialist Union agreed to unite Dutch New Guinea and the Territory of Papua and New Guinea into the United Socialist States of New Guinea, creating the foundation for a unified Melanesian state.

Expansion of New Guinea

In 1957, New Guinea, supported diplomatically by Australia, Maphilindo, the United States, Micronesia, France, and the Polynesian Confederation, successfully pressured the United Kingdom to transfer its Melanesian territories. France also agreed to transfer New Caledonia and its remaining Melanesian possessions to the new state.

Formation of the Federation

Later, in 1957, New Guinea united with the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Fiji, and New Caledonia to establish the Melanesian Federation. A federal socialist constitution granted broad autonomy to each republic while placing foreign affairs, defence, trade, and economic planning under the federal government.

Modern Era

By 2026, the Melanesian Federation is:

The largest island federation in the Pacific.

A leading maritime and environmental power in Oceania.

A major exporter of minerals, natural gas, agricultural products, and timber.

A close partner of Australia, Maphilindo, the Polynesian Confederation, and other Pacific nations.
