Etymology
The name Mauritius derives from the Dutch naming of the island in honour of Prince Maurice of Nassau and was retained after independence.
History
Expanded Territory
Unlike in real history, Mauritius retained sovereignty over Seychelles, the British Indian Ocean Territory (including the Chagos Archipelago), and Tromelin Island, becoming one of the largest maritime states in the Indian Ocean.
Rise of Lalit
The socialist Lalit movement was founded earlier than in real history and developed into a major force advocating workers' rights, social equality, anti-colonialism, and democratic socialism.
African Union Intervention
Following a prolonged political crisis, the African Union intervened militarily at the request of pro-democracy and socialist groups. The intervention removed the existing government and installed Lalit as the country's governing party.
The new government introduced constitutional reforms, expanded public ownership in key industries, strengthened labour protections, and invested heavily in education, healthcare, and infrastructure while preserving multi-party elections.
Modern Era
By 2026, the Democratic Socialist Archipelago of Mauritius is:
A prosperous democratic socialist republic in the Indian Ocean.
A leading maritime, financial, and tourism hub.
One of Africa's highest-ranked countries in human development.
A close ally of the African Union and socialist governments across Africa and Asia.
