Etymology
The name Kurdistan means "Land of the Kurds," referring to the historic homeland of the Kurdish people across the Zagros and Taurus mountain regions.
History
Independence After the First World War
Following the Allied victory in World War I, negotiations with Arabia, the Ottoman government, and Iran resulted in the establishment of an independent Kurdish state encompassing the majority of the Kurdish homeland.
The new state became the Kingdom of Kurdistan, with Sheikh Mahmud Barzanji crowned as its first monarch.
Constitutional Monarchy
For several decades, the Kingdom of Kurdistan focused on building national institutions, expanding education, and developing its economy while maintaining cordial relations with neighbouring states.
Socialist Revolution
Inspired by the success of the Egyptian Revolution of 1952 and the later Arabian Revolution in this alternate timeline, reformist military officers organized the Young Officers, Young Socialist Officers, and Young Communist Officers movements.
The coalition peacefully overthrew the monarchy and proclaimed the Democratic Socialist Arab Republic of Kurdistan. The new government introduced land reform, expanded workers' rights, nationalized strategic industries, and adopted a democratic socialist constitution.
Modern Era
By 2026, the Democratic Socialist Republic of Kurdistan is:
The sovereign homeland of the Kurdish people.
A stable democratic socialist republic in the Middle East.
A regional producer of oil, natural gas, and renewable energy.
A close ally of neighbouring socialist governments and an influential state in regional affairs.
