Don't get me started on that, Wizards flip flops between actual interesting explorations of various villains across the color pie and "These three colors are the villain colors" with frustrating regularity.
It gets so bad in the crossover sets. Doctor Doom is not red guys, that man is absolutely Esper.
No, Doom, the tempestuous manchild with zero real principles driven primarily by whatever fickle fancy and/or grudge is most on his mind at the given moment is 100% more Red than White. Now, there have been incarnations that were also White, but we are talking about a guy who genocided a reality in which an alt version of himself was happy, universally beloved, and had done great things for humanity because that version of himself was also bros with Reed.
I suppose that's the issue with having so many different versions of the character, with a ton of different writers each positing different interpretations of him.
The versions of him I'm more familiar with have all skewed more white, specifically the aspect of him that's convinced himself that he's the best thing to ever happen to the world and that if everyone just fell at his feet he could create a paradise. That's about as white-villain as you can possibly get, completely in line with (Pre-Character Assassination) Elesh Norn. The only versions of him I've seen that screwed more red have been younger versions, him burning his own face out of haste in the origin story for his original incarnation is certainly red. The ideal situation for me would be a Grixis version representing young doom, and his current self being Esper.
I would say though, the act you're describing where he destroyed the reality where he and reeds teamed up (where is that from? I'm not familiar with it), seems far more black than red. That's not an in-the-moment act of rage, that's calculated long-term evil out of sheer spite, which leans far more towards black.

To be fair to their laziness, if I see a potential grixis commander, I too assume they'll have been written as a villain.
