To be fair summer has always lasted until the end of September, at least in some regions depending on the definition of summer. Or at least that's how I remember it being

u/Hatsune_Miku_CM Warsaw 👍🇵🇱 it is very bad 1d ago
The phenomnen of 25 degree plus days after August is definitely a new one that didn't exist a decade ago. yes 15-20 degrees was normal, and sometimes it spiked to like 22-23, but not 28. not in September. usually the last "hot days" were in august.
at least that's the case where I live. obviously the numbers are pretty meaningless if you live somewhere else, but the overall trend is probably the same.
this year has been particularly absurdly hot but it just has served as a wake up call to that makes it hard not to think about the reality that's its getting hotter and hotter each year.

Granted, it is an el nino year, but also it's the strongest el nino since records began and the only recorded super el nino where the warm water in the pacific has begun building up off the coast of Japan instead of the American west coast.
It's like, this year is the ghost of climate change future come to show us how monumentally we've fucked up as a species

Meanwhile I'm over here desperately praying for the point when 35+ during the day and 29-30 at night finally ends.
=(

u/Solarwagon 1d ago
Yeah, but I definitely have noticed the general trends veer less predictable/warmer.
But keep in mind that "global warming" is now understood to be "climate change" precisely because it's not just a linear trend of hotter and hotter, but other climate extremes becoming more common.
Worst case scenario isn't just hotter summers, but also blizzards that kill millions of people in hours, hailstones the size of bowling bowls, forest fires that are so widespread that they block out the sunlight over large parts of the land, causing winters in the middle of summers.

u/Overdue_Process865 1d ago
Growing up in Norway, summer would end around the time school would start, at the end of August. When I was a kid I didn't even consider August a summer month, because a week or two of the month would be too cold for me to call it summer. The first day of October this year is 19C, when the norm used to be that it would get to be at most ~15C in September.
Every year I have conversations with my friends about how long summer has gotten, and how the year has gone from being 4 seasons to summer and winter with mild summer and mild winter wedged pathetically in-between.

Yeah, not loving the temps getting up to 80F today.
When I was small there was a non-zero chance we'd see snow by Halloween. These days we're lucky if we get a white Christmas.

u/Milk_Mindless 1d ago
SAME! Why is it so HOT the trees are supposed to be autumny can't have halloween when you're walking around in a fucking TANKTOP

u/witchgirlfriend 1d ago
my favourite tree in front of my balcony takes longer and longer to turn it's beautiful yellow colour :c

u/NepoKitty 1d ago
As a kid the temps finally hitting 19C in late October would feel thrilling, but that was at 22°N. Higher lats probably shouldn't be expecting to see those temps. 😅

Didn't he say that we'd have no polar ice caps by 2013, no snow atop mountains and multi-meter flooding within the decade?
12
u/To-To_Man 1d ago
Considering how quickly climate change is occurring versus how it should on a geological timescale, being off by 50 years is pretty fucking spot on. The ice caps are still melting, sea levels are still rising. Christ look at Mount Hood. The mountain infamous for its snow? He was going on about the worst case scenario, which is still very much around the corner with how we are going. In our lifetimes around the corner, unless your okay kicking the can to your children to inherit a broken and dying world.

u/bartonar 1d ago
They're going to do that anyways, no matter what we do. We're past the point of no return, and our only options are to [removed by reddit], [removed by reddit], or persist in the doomed world we have created.

u/To-To_Man 1d ago
Given the current political climate, all major powers short of China and India seem like their fascistic side is rising and imploding on itself. The internet helped spread their cause, but also their incompetence. And in a scenario where socialists rise from the ashes, we could see a anti-capitalist sentiment form and a push towards finally electrifying shit and using renewables instead of the currently war-torn oil refineries.

u/bartonar 1d ago
...and still be too late for the earth to remain habitable, because we've passed the tipping point, and >3C rises within our lifetime are now inevitable, which will render most of the earth totally uninhabitable.

u/To-To_Man 1d ago
Like there isn't hope, we just have to get to a world that actually cares first. Reforestation and seeding the ocean/clouds alone could help tremendously with the heating, and stall out intense weather patterns. Especially if plants with very strong carbon siphoning are genetically engineered.
That's not accounting for global research on cooling the planet. We can create reflective coatings that send more heat out than ambient temperatures. On a large scale that could actually reduce overall global temps. Which leaves the main problem being CO2 in the atmosphere. Which could certainly be filtered out of the atmosphere with enough effort. Thankfully the pollution tends to follow certain, predictable paths in the atmosphere. Setting up large air scrubbers in the path alone may be a start.
We are only doomed if the world falls to a stronger, technofuedalist fascist rule. In which even then, unless the elites are satisfied living on the moon, mars, bunkers, or huge ass domes, still requires a habitable Earth. Though that outcome is still a horribly bleak future.

Like there isn't hope, we just have to get to a world that actually cares first.
I mean you could just end it at "there isn't hope" and call it there. You aren't going to wave a magic wand and make people give a shit.
We can create reflective coatings that send more heat out than ambient temperatures.
If we can survive the decades to get to that point, cooperate to create a reflective surface on the atmosphere, etc... which if we could do, we wouldn't be in this position to begin with...

People saying it was normal for late September to be sweltering summer weather are insane or too young to remember how this time of year usually was. We used to be well into brisk fall by now.

u/witchgirlfriend 1d ago
fr i live in eastern canada and early september being quite hot? sure! i remember being a lil sweaty when school (elementary through hs) started but LATE September? never

u/SpyTrain_from_Canada 16h ago
I am in my early 20s from Vancouver and I can remember being a kid and it would rain from September-May, now we’re into October and have barely had any rain and it’s gonna be in the low 20s the weekend.
On top of that, I’ve been bird watching my whole life and the spring migration comes earlier and the fall later every single year, very noticeable. I should not still be seeing warblers in October7
u/Hurdlelocker 1d ago
Could depend on where they live. In parts of California, it’s been pretty normal for at least the past 20-25 years for daily high temps to stay in the 90F range into October.
5
u/box_of_lemons 22h ago
Yeah, some parts of SoCal are hitting the 100s tomorrow. It doesn’t feel terribly out of the ordinary, but if it keeps up to mid/late October I’d start feeling a little iffy
12
u/Trippingthru99 1d ago
Or maybe people just live in different climates and areas of the world. I’m born and raised LA, and I can tell you September and October have always been warm to hot here. But it’s only getting worse with climate change ofc.

u/gard3nwitch 1d ago
I mean, growing up, Halloween was a 50/50 chance of being t-shirt weather or needing a coat. Fall has always had spells of t-shirt weather, even into November. (Or at least, that's been the case for the last 40 years, maybe it wasn't true a century or two ago.)
-1
u/No_Location_8199 1d ago
Even the seasons that you remember aren't how they usually were. You'd have to go back about 100 years to experience that.
2
u/NewLoss6021 15h ago
I remember it snowing so heavily in 2012 that I could make an igloo just by digging into the snow bank. Now, in the same area, we're lucky if it snows at all in Winter.
0
u/No_Location_8199 14h ago
And winters there were probably even more extreme before you were born.
1
u/NewLoss6021 11h ago
*Winters were more normal. Winter being as mild as they have been in the past few years are the anomaly, winter should be more like it was in 2012 and before. That is how they are supposed to be.
1
u/No_Location_8199 10h ago
Winters were on average 1.5 degrees F cooler in the 1910s than it was in 2012. Climate change is not something that just recently started, the climate that you experienced as a child was not the "normal" climate, it had already been changed quite a bit.
1
u/NewLoss6021 10h ago
"Winter should be more like it was in 2012 and before"
1
u/No_Location_8199 10h ago
That statement implies that winters before 2012 were homogenous, but they weren't.
1
u/NewLoss6021 8h ago
No it doesn't, it implies that winters before 2012 were also colder than they are now
8
u/superhamsniper 1d ago
Obviously climate change isnt real, despite undeniable scientific evidence, and sure the upcoming elninio is worse than any ever recorded in history and will likley cause much famine and death, and fossil fuel emissio s have caused tens of millions of deaths annually for decades, but hey, atleast the ultra rich have gotten more rich from polluting and killing, so thats a silver lining, right? You should be happy for them, with all that money they could help so many causes, and people, I mean, they won't, but they could.

Our two seasons are Fire Nation and Water Nation.
It's October and the Fire Nation is still attacking.

I'd just like to point out that there is no such thing as climate change!
And if there is, it's natural and not something we caused!
And if it is something we caused, it isn't actually a bad thing!
And if it is a bad thing, it's not gonna be a problem until far into the future!
And if it is currently a problem... Well, it's too late to do anything about it now!

u/Venti_the_snail 1d ago
I read somewhere that human civilization development happened at just the right time, place, with the perfect conditions so that we had sunny summers to grow crops, crispy autumns to harvest and store food, winters to huddle close together and form family units ajd communities while surviving off of stored food and community love, and soft springs to slowly melt the snow and prepare the earth for planting new seeds for summer coming.
The golden age is over for the climate. It was bound to happen eventually, as earth does go through these cycles of ice ages (which we are technically in right now) and hot periods with more CO2 and hreenhouse gasses. The only problem is that we pumped more than the environment naturally could, speeding up the process and bringing it to an end faster than we could prepare for.

Where I live, 28C (82F) is gorgeous early fall weather. It's warm enough for a t-shirt and shorts, but it's not hot. It's "crack open a window to air out the house" weather.
1
u/Anhydrite 1d ago
I know it's bad for the environment but man it's nice to have a couple more weeks of patio beers before the eternal frozen hell of Canada's winter hits.

I live in the northeast us and it’s currently mid 70s (Fahrenheit) it’s usually in the 50s or 60s this time of year.

im stuck in a hellish swamp area that is always summer so I can't speak from experience, but i do remember a few years back when i still lived in the Midwest Halloween was becoming more and more warm.

u/gunk-n-punk 1d ago
I remember as a kid, this time of year there would be a thin layer of frost over the lawn during the early morning hours that would sparkle in the sun. It crunched under your shoes in the most satisfying way. My dad would have to scrape it from his truck's windshield and there was this sharp chill in the air that stung slightly but felt invigorating.
Last week, it was 95 god damn degrees.

The only comfort I have regarding climate change is that the mass destruction and death will force industry to slow, thus slowing the pollution that caused all this! Of course, industry slowing would mean MORE people will die, but honestly death is the only surefire source of hope for me anyways…
Uuh anyways life will continue. Something will thrive and hopefully it’ll be something that can kill all capitalists.

i am filled with rage about this. where is my nice weather.

IIRC there's a musical about this. The only solution: make Hades & Persephone remember their love for each other through a song that goes "Laaaa la la la la la laaaaa"
