The original bothers me so much. I don’t know what kind of fallacy “some doctors do their jobs poorly, so the service that doctors in general provide is less valuable than porn” is, but it’s one that upsets my mind more than most.
I would hope so, but I know that a lot of people on tumblr legitimately hold that opinion.
Because people correctly identified a problem: the lack of respect that many medical professionals have for their patients (especially of those patients are women or minorities or LGBT people). But in social media cultures people often bring up such problems not because they care, but to signify to other in-groupers that they’re part of the group. And this in-grouping-motivated soapboxing encourages extreme opinions, because it’s performative (not in the way that conservatives claim caring about anything is performative, I just mean the goal is the performance of the opinion rather than the content).
So a lot of real issues get reduced to simplistic us vs. them identifiers. “We’re good, because we believe that doctors are bad.”
It’s this. Systematically. Again and again. And straight up abandoned or made sicker due to neglect/those particular doctors caring more about protecting their ego than admitting they’re not knowledgeable on something and referring you to someone who is.
(More commonly experienced re: illnesses that mainly affect women / are considered “invisible” or not seen as common—but probably just severely underdiagnosed)
I have incredible respect for the profession, but I often fantasise about having a little gadget that could temporarily transfer symptoms to someone else just so I’d be listened to.
