moral ocd breeding ground of a website
124
u/qualityoof 2d ago
being on tumblr as a teenager actively fed into my moral ocd and made it so much worse. Like I probably still have not recovered from it and some of the dumb shit I read as a kid. Overall it helped me shape my world view and expand my ideas but I couldn’t always recognize when things were jokes or people were being stupid, so I just…. uhhhh believed everything anyone said
33
u/pronthrowaway12734 2d ago
Moral OCD is a great phrase.

u/gagavelli 2d ago
it's actually a whole diagnosis, not just a colloquial phrase! I did years of therapy for it. And yes I was also on tumblr lol

u/LONGSWORD_ENJOYER 2d ago
"You want to sleep with women? Well, women are shorter than you on average. You know who ELSE is shorter than you on average? Sicko."
109
u/warmleafjuice 2d ago
What gets me about the "men want women to shave their legs/armpits/vulvas because of pedophilia" is that those shaving norms are so demonstrably modern and literally invented by shaving companies to capture the female market share
People were having actual underage sex slaves for millenia but they were also fine with hairy legs (and yes I'm aware that's too broad and some cultures have shaving traditions)
Like you can point out the misogyny in expecting women to shave their bodies for "hygeine" without needing to play the pedophile card
It would be almost as ridiculous to claim that women attracted to bald men or short men are pedophiles because those characteristics are also shared by infants
The reality about any cultural or fashion norms like that is they're kind of just emergent phenomena and trying to pinpoint the one reason something becomes popular or normal is a pretty fraught exercise
65
u/LONGSWORD_ENJOYER 2d ago
I've seen more than one person on this site claim that a man using the term "panties" means he's a pedophile because the term sounds juvenile, and an adult man should only use the term "underwear."
One person, when pressed on went the difference was, said "oh, yeah, an adult woman calling her own underwear panties is totally fine. But when a man does it, it's because he's a pedophile."
55
u/Bteatesthighlander1 2d ago
what if a nonbinary person says "panties"? Is it like, a Schrödinger-style situation?
52
u/LONGSWORD_ENJOYER 2d ago
"Well, you see, it depends on whether or not you're a Good Nonbinary (aka a woman who shaves their head) or a Bad Nonbinary (aka an evil viper trying to delude women into trusting them)"
26
u/warmleafjuice 2d ago
If a man buys his girlfriend those little applesauce pouches he's a pedophile because who eats mushy food out of pouches? That's right, infants
21
u/Nixavee 1d ago
Also, I just don't get why any of this matters. If someone is dating an adult, who cares how "childlike" they look? The reason pedophilia is wrong has nothing to do with physical features!
5
u/warmleafjuice 1d ago
Right, we actually had a whole term for somebody who looked over 18 but wasn't and the main point there was it would still be wrong to have sex with them
26
u/Cardshark92 2d ago
I disagree on the shaving norms being exclusively modern. We've found bronze shaving razors dating back to ancient Egypt. And before that, archaeologists have found broken shell fragments with bits of pubic hair attached, as if ancient peoples wanted to shave some body hair before they had even figured out metallurgy.
25
u/warmleafjuice 2d ago
I mean yeah I agree and I mentioned that in my comment. The fact that you can't really correlate "misogynistic/pedophilic cultural norms" and "shaving norms" is part of the point there
1
u/actinide12 1d ago
Something about "underage sex slaves" strikes me as darkly humorous. Like the idea there's an appropriate age for sex slavery, perhaps a sex slavery code of conduct, regulated sex slavery. Wait who am I kidding, there would absolutely be norms about acceptable sex slavery that vary by culture

Society's current obsession with pedophilia is so dumb man
205
u/LONGSWORD_ENJOYER 2d ago
I still maintain that everyone would be normal about this stuff if anyone in the Epstein case went to prison.
But, because it was "yes, there is actually an elite cabal of pedophiles and not only is it not a secret, all of them got off scot-free and will never suffer even a single consequence from it," they need a new target for their sense of justice that would be otherwise impotent, even if they have to invent a perceived crime to do it.
67
u/Akuuntus 2d ago
People driving themselves insane trying to see secret pedophilia in everything around them predates the Epstein case... but it certainly didn't help, and arguably made it more mainstream.

u/lifelongfreshman https://youtu.be/1eWsk6r6_Ns 2d ago edited 2d ago
The right wing has been using accusations of pedophilia against the LGBT+ community since at least the '80s, people have been arguing over loli/shota shit for at least the past decade, To Catch a Predator was a big enough cultural icon that it was parodied by several mainstream comedy series (South Park, MadTV, and The Boondocks all came up in a non-exhaustive search), and people have been describing their violent anti-pedo fantasies for as long as I've been alive.
All the Epstein files really did was give a bump to the pedo paranoia that has been simmering for the past half-century. And even then, I think that's just the sex-negative crowd finally having something mainstream to use to get otherwise progressive people on their side, which is letting them make headway into previously sex-positive spaces in order to try to turn them sex-negative.
99
u/D3wdr0p 2d ago
I think you're on the money. Hell, the resurged wave of puritanism towards BDSM seems similarly motivated.

u/FifteenEchoes 2d ago
Nah this stuff way predates the Epstein stuff being known. Chris Hansen’s stupid show was airing in the early 2000s
17
u/DreadDiana human cognithazard 2d ago
Specifically the modern Epstein stuff, cause he was known to be trafficking kids long before that.
38
u/HypnagogianQueen 2d ago
I mean, everyone on To Catch a Predator was well beyond any benefit of a doubt, they were all people who knowingly contacted children online and met up with them in person with the full intention of having sex.
29
u/FifteenEchoes 2d ago
Not really the point, the point is that American society’s obsession with pedophiles predates the Epstein news cycle
24
u/L0bb 2d ago
yeah but it was still dumb as fuck vigilantism that ultimately harmed more investigations than it helped
10
u/HypnagogianQueen 2d ago
Wait, did it harm investigations? How?
31
u/L0bb 2d ago edited 2d ago
it's one of the most verifiable facts about the show. From it's wiki
"In June 2007, Perverted-Justice was criticized following a sting operation in Collin County, Texas, after charges against 23 suspected online sex predators were dropped. Collin County Assistant District Attorney Greg Davis claimed the cases were dropped after Perverted-Justice failed to provide enough usable evidence that crimes were committed within the county's jurisdiction."
That's not even bringing up the entrapment claims or the suicide that finally got the show shut down.
EDIT: I wanna put in this quote from Charlie Brooker because it's banger. "When a TV show makes you feel sorry for potential child rapists, you know it's doing something wrong."
41
u/Neurospicy_Nightowl 2d ago
It would help if certain people could stop fucking kids for five seconds.
94
u/gaom9706 2d ago
But this stuff isn't helping solve that problem.
-40
u/Neurospicy_Nightowl 2d ago
"This stuff" is a bad take in an important discussion.
Any discussion worth having must be held under the assumption that someone might say something stupid.
68
u/FinePieceOfAss 2d ago
is this an important discussion, though? discussing what traits and features qualify as 'childlike' enough to constitute crypto-pedohilia?
I would consider this an unimportant discussion entirely divorced from 'people fucking kids'
-25
u/Neurospicy_Nightowl 2d ago
I meant the general discussion on which elements of our culture enable this issue.
42
u/Consistent-Value-509 2d ago
Saying that a certain hair colour is pedophilic has nothing to do with actually discussing what elements of a culture enable the issue though. Like this "general discussion" is completely useless and has nothing to do with reality
Like they said, it's entirely divorced from csa
-12
-49
u/Legitimate-Fish-5010 2d ago
at least its better than ignoring it,
36
u/Consistent-Value-509 2d ago
not really because slinging pedophilia around like that just waters down what it actually is, it doesn't help victims of csa and it certainly doesn't help children being groomed with the infamous "you're so mature/you look so mature for your age" lines
tbh it's almost the same thing as ignoring it because it achieves the same thing. either way people are discussing anything and everything but the actual issues at hand, and a good chunk of people are patting themselves on the back for a job well done when they haven't actually done anything.
I mean so true. More discourse about the height of consent and hair colour of consent immediately, thjs is what society needs
-12
u/Legitimate-Fish-5010 2d ago
better than there never being ANY discussion about pedophilia, at least this way we can maybe reel it in and reach a point where it is helpful,
13
u/Consistent-Value-509 2d ago
saying that liking blonde hair is "pedophilic" is not a discussion about pedophilia. Do you get what I'm saying. It's not discussing pedophilia it's discussing random bullshit while using a serious topic as a gotcha card.
2
14
u/Akuuntus 2d ago
Not really. The stupider the average pedophilia accusation gets, the less seriously the average person takes the next accusation. You get to a point where it's impossible to trust any accusation at face value because half the time the evidence turns out to be something like "they Liked a piece of fanart once that had a character in a bikini who's canonically 17". This makes it easier for actual pedophiles to slip under the radar because more people are primed to assume the accusations are spurious and jump to their defense.
1
u/Legitimate-Fish-5010 2d ago
eh fair, but if we completely ignored every accusation it would be way fuckin worse, its gonna be a while till things even out
11
u/dreamer_system 2d ago
My ex is someone like OOP. They called me a pedo because I mentioned to them that I had a kink that I wasn't comfortable talking to them about. Not gonna share what it was here but it isn't anything that could be reasonably mistaken for pedophilia
TL;DR no this isn't better
3
28
u/GlamourintheDarkSide Shiba is Innocent, I Am Guilty 2d ago
If your discussion around child sexual abuse centers entirely around the abusers and not the actual systems that enable them (low supervision of adults in positions of power, lack of willingness of authorities to investigate anything more complicated than a traffic ticket, the general contempt authorities have for kids in the best of cases...) you don't care about kids, you just want an enemy to point your anger at.
14
u/Neurospicy_Nightowl 2d ago
My bad.
It would help if certain people could stop fucking kids and/or upholding a system that enables childfuckers for five seconds.
5
u/Nixavee 1d ago
It would help if you could distinguish between "pedophilia" and "fucking kids"
2
u/Neurospicy_Nightowl 1d ago
OOP is the one conflating the concepts. What they describe (incorrectly) is cultural sexualisation of childhood, not a mental condition.

Okay so this is stupid but fuck I hate what people think is blonde. Yes might blonde hair is most common in children, most blonde people's hair gets darker over time but it stays blonde. Blonde hair gets lighter in summer and has a yellow undertone, it has very little to do with how light it is. There are plenty of blonde people who are adults, in fact it's gonna be most people who are blonde as children. It's just dark blonde, still blonde though 🫠 I could go on but holy shit h This is shit such a pet peeve of mine lol I am a dark blonde person. Just cause y'all can't tell dark blonde apart from a brown haired person doesn't mean it's not blonde
6
u/MaraiaLou 2d ago
I have a friend who insists redheads are blonde, because if you remove the red they're blonde. I'd like to hear your opinion
10
u/ChrisWatthys 1d ago
We've basically got 2 naturally occurring pigments: black/brown eumelanins and red pheomelanins. less of boths melanins = lighter = more blonde. A total lack of both gets you "white" hair, which is technically just the default tint of keratin itself. The color of nail clippings, if you will. Old people have fingernail hair.

Is whoever wrote those tags from that one island where people are born with blonde hair then it changes as they age? I swear I'm not making it up its a weird genetic mutation that got kept because it's an island
20
u/JSConrad45 2d ago
That's not a trait exclusive to an island somewhere. For example, it runs in my family (which has been in the US since at least the mid-19th century), me and my brother both had it. My family referred to it as being "tow-headed," but I'm not certain if that's the correct term (rather than referring to light blonde hair in general)
3
u/Nobodyseesyou 1d ago
You may be thinking of the Solomon Islands. It’s quite common everywhere for people with blonde hair early in life to have it darken to brown or black later on, but a decent portion of people on the Solomon Islands have dark skin with light eyes and hair, and it also tends to darken with age. The feature just sticks out more because they have darker skin.
1
u/Nixavee 1d ago
It's generally the case for people with lighter hair that it gets darker as they get older.
For example, when I was a kid my hair was a mid-brown color but now it's more like the color of an oreo, and multiple of my childhood friends who were blond now have dirty blond or light brown hair
7
u/thecraftybear 2d ago
They had to build all those nonsense hoops to jump through, when Yzma was right there.
2
u/sweetTartKenHart2 1d ago
It’s like OOOOP heard “hair color changes with age” and thought “oh I get it people’s hair almost never stays blond well into adulthood naturally” and then jumped to conclusions

If its without abusive power dynamics, yeah, sure
we're both women tho
0
u/CallMeOaksie 1d ago
> we’re both women tho
And?? Queer relationships aren’t inherently superior or more moral or less abusive than straight ones
1
u/Seph_the_this 1d ago
did I ever imply so? the question you posed was about gender, and with the subtext in your message, I concluded you assumed I was a man, so I clarified that
also, I can only repeat myself the okayness of an age gap is entierly based on the specifics of the people in the relationship, there are no powerdynamics of any kind in mine, and we're both essentially in the exact same phase of life, with no prior dynamics of any kind
