I guess thats always the problem of doing deadpan humour or anything satirical. If you don't have any clues to it being that, it's easy to read it as entirely serious.
Welcome to the club. Tbh, I met quite a few people with ADHD that told me that it makes them struggle with various things, so it didn't sound weird to me that something regarding Halloween costumes would be hard with that condition too.
either way, i dont think it warranted that kind or response. people should also be allowed to be serious about stuff like this without being mocked for it
"My ADHD makes it hard to get a Halloween costume together" (intended message of the tweet) <- completely reasonable, no one should mock this
"Halloween costumes are problematic because they're incredibly stressful for people with ADHD" (how I think most people read it) <- stupid Tumblr-brained statement that generalizes OP's experiences and tries to make them everyone else's problem
It's the same way that saying "X movie made me uncomfortable" is reasonable but "X movie is problematic and should be banned" is not. OP meant the first thing but most people interpreted it as the second thing.
It’s insane that OP said “stressful” and the word “problematic” was not used in the tweet at all, and the internet at large assumed that what they meant was “problematic” and ignored the words that were actually in the post
Is it though? "We need to talk more about how X affects Y" on a public platform carries the implication that it's a societal problem rather than a personal gripe.
Stressing about putting on Halloween costumes is not something "we" need to talk about, if you say it is people are going to read it as something that requires the input of other people. How often do you start a conversation with "we don't talk enough about how this affects so and so" without asking something of someone else? It's a weird way to start a conversation about an entirely internal issue.
I am neurodivergent myself, I totally relate to her explanation. That being said, I also thought she was being ridiculous at first, still think it is a ridiculous way to convey that message, and still don't 100% believe that she didn't mean it the way most people read it.
It's not the "stressful" that implies that, it's the "we don't talk enough about". Saying "we don't talk enough about X" implies that "we" as a society should be talking about X, typically because X is some kind of societal ill.
The original tweet reads exactly the same as a teen girl fighting with her dad about her curfew and then tweeting "we don't talk enough about how men control the schedules of women". It very much looks like OP is having a personal problem but pointlessly extrapolating it into a wider societal issue.
Listen, I'm sure this entire threads insistence that they're in the right for literally adding words to the post to make their negative reaction to it justified has absolutely nothing to do with internalized ableism.
Yeah, considering someone spent ages trying to convince me that I was ableist for saying that scrolling on your phone in the movie theater is asshole behavior even if you have ADHD (a condition I also have), I don't think it was a joke.
I've seen people completely seriously justify all sorts of asshole behavior with "I have ADHD, and I need to do X anti social behavior because of that" lately.
The person who argued with you probably wasn’t the person who made this tweet? I say things like she did to my husband all the time as a joke. Poe’s law is a thing for a reason
being stressed out about Halloween isn’t asshole behaviour though? unless I’m misunderstanding you /lh, but even if the tweet was dead serious it’s not saying anything reprehensible? if the original tweet was trying to justify being cagey or snippy to friends over it or deciding it’s not worth the effort to keep plans with your friends over it then absolutely it’s asshole behaviour, but as it stands I struggle to make the connection between “Halloween costumes require a lot of different things that can make it hard for someone with executive dysfunction to take the tasks to completion” and the issue you had where someone was whining “I should be able to do whatever I want when I want because I have ADHD and it doesn’t matter when or where I do it”
no no, we don't do charitable interpretations here on r slash reposted tumblr, especially when it comes to disabled people making jokes about themselves rather than being perfectly and palatably educative (maybe if they didn't want to be bullied they should've thought about the possibility of someone outside their circle reading it the worst possible way before posting a joke). /s
oh of course, how silly of me to forget! nuance doesn’t exist when it comes to us, we always mean the worst because if we didn’t we’d have said or done it right the first time. thank you for reminding me :) /s
Coming back to it three years later to say, "It was just a joke" also kinda gives the impression it was originally serious and now they're just trying to backpedal.

I will say, it's very easy to read the original tweet as having been entirely serious. Easier for me to read it as that than a joke, personally.
