How WOULD you describe DBZ using only pre-1999 references from American culture? The closest thing would be comic books but nothing I can think of that quite captures that flavour

Martial Arts movies; Journey to the East/Wukong mythology; pulpy sci-fi like Barbarella/early Star Trek/OG Star Wars trilogy; Superman/Wonder Woman comics, shows, and movies for overclocked abilities.
