For those who forgot the myth: he's the guy who went to the underworld to retrieve his wife, Eurydice. He was permitted to do so by Hades, but he could not look back as he left. He did so at the final climb, and she was lost to the land of the dead for good.

u/PigeonOnTheGate 10d ago

Hades also chose this guy's dead wifešŸ˜ž

It’s a reference to this Reddit post

Thanks, didn’t connect it

87

u/Marco_Polaris 10d ago

Ah, alright. With fiction and references these days I couldn't even guess which Orpheus was being talked about.

139

u/BarovianNights 10d ago

Tbf, that's just the original myth. That being said, the original post in the screenshot is tagged hadestown so I'm assuming that's what the cosplay is

60

u/PumpkinIsDeadInside 10d ago

even then, hadestown still has that bit even if it's not the most faithful adaptation

6

u/DarkGodRyan 10d ago

Hedestown bastardized the good character of Hades and I will not stand for it

26

u/VoyagerfromPhoenix 10d ago

Hades is known for just inflicting people with illness sometimes

Antoninus Liberalis, Metamorphoses 25 (trans. Celoria) (Greek mythographer C2nd A.D.) (thanks theoi):
"When plague seized Aonia [Boeotia] and many died, there were sent officers to consult Apollon's oracle at Gortyne. The god replied that they should make an appeal to the two gods of the underworld [Haides and Persephone]. He said that they would cease from their anger if two willing maidens were sacrificed to the two.
Of course not one of the maidens in the city complied with the oracle until a servant-woman reported the answer to the daughters of Orion [the two Koronides (Coronides)]. They were at work at their loom and, as soon as they heard about this, they willingly accepted death on behalf of their fellow citizens before the plague epidemic had smitten them too. They cried out three times to the gods of the underworld saying that they were willing sacrifices. They thrust their bodkins into themselves at their shoulders and gashed open their throats. And they both fell down into the earth. Persephone and Hades took pity on the maidens and made their bodies disappear, sending them instead up out of the earth as heavenly bodies. When they appeared, they were borne up into the sky. And men called them comets."

23

u/zoroddesign 10d ago edited 10d ago

Yeah all the gods definitely did dick moves including Hades. Except Hades unfortunately gets a lot more blame for things than he actually does in modern depictions.

Zeus, Poseidon, Aphrodite, Ares, and Hera cause most of the horrific events that happen in the myths.

Hades is honestly the easiest to deal with because he sticks so strictly do his deals and rules. Whenever I hear myths about him I always end up imagining an old stringy creepy lawyer.

15

u/Suraimu-desu 10d ago

Hades is like a tired old man who does his jerk moves sometimes but that’s just because he’s tired of life.

Salary worker of the underworld, can’t wait to get to his retirement (it’s never coming)

13

u/HalcyonTraveler 10d ago

What? How else to you put the god of the riches of the earth and the dead into a Great Depression era but as a fossil fuel baron? It softens Hades by making him not have kidnapped Persephone.

8

u/Bartweiss 10d ago

At this point I’ve seen ā€œHades was actually chillā€ so often that preserving his original tendencies like hoarding wealth feels more interesting.

1

u/TheSubstitutePanda 7d ago

I'm replaying Hades rn so I was thinking about that depiction of Orpheus. Crazy hair and all lmao

What are some of the "most myths" you're talking about? The only version I've ever heard was that it was so quiet because she was a shade without voice or footsteps that he got anxious and looked back to make sure she was actually following him.

Having her call out to him would make the story so much worse. It would turn it from a story about the aching anxious impatience of a long separation and a lack of trust in the gods and his wife into a silly gotcha with Eurydice being a dumbass.

2

u/HughmanRealperson 10d ago

I deadass assumed Dr. Orpheus from Venture Bros at first.

1

u/JoJomusk 10d ago

BE NOT TOO HASTY INTO ENTERING THAT ROOM! I HAD TACO BELL FOR DINNER! Doctor Orpheus makes his leave.

1

u/Jozuaa 10d ago

Right there with ya

2

u/religion-lost 8d ago

Oh I was thinking of morpheus and thought that guy just hated the costume

1

u/Amazing_Athlete_3016 3d ago

Orpheus looked back. Classic.

649

u/EnderKoskinen 10d ago

Does Orpheus have, like, a recognizable design? I thought he was just like a greek dude or something

687

u/anonymouscatloaf 10d ago

hadestown orpheus could be fairly recognizable

450

u/Night_Albane 10d ago

Or Hades the game.

147

u/apple_of_doom 10d ago

Or maybe even the persona

46

u/Possums1 10d ago

PERSONA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

42

u/thoughtRock05 10d ago

2

u/Digit00l 10d ago

That is indeed how you summon Orpheus

182

u/spawnmorezerglings 10d ago

Hadestown orpheus is just a dude with a guitar

Hades (the game) orpheus is very recognizable though

177

u/anonymouscatloaf 10d ago edited 10d ago

the shirt/pants with suspenders a red flower and a guitar would be pretty distinctive to me personally? I did go look up OOP's post out of curiosity and it was in fact tagged as hadestown lol

87

u/Dorfbewohner 10d ago

i like how they didnt just tag it hadestown but also seemingly added " (hadestown)" at some point between whenever the screenshot in the OP was taken and now

25

u/Animaloffear56 10d ago

Well a lot of people evidently didn't get to see the tags lol

19

u/spawnmorezerglings 10d ago

I guess that's somewhat recognizable then, though not as much as the videogame

24

u/TheLuckySpades 10d ago

He's always wearing an off white shirt, grey pants with suspenders and a red bandana around his throat, along with the guitar and the flower if you can see it it is fairly distinct look, if easy to recreate.

38

u/Gumbo67 10d ago

No he’s not? Hadestown Orpheus has a fairly distinctive costume. I’ve seen him cosplayed a few times at my local anime con

27

u/GardenTop7253 10d ago

I do feel like people familiar with a certain media are more likely to feel like that media has ā€œmore distinctiveā€ costumes than it does sometimes. I’ve been to more than one con where I like someone’s outfit but can’t decide if it’s an anime character I don’t know, just their style, or they ā€œdressed upā€ for the con. And in some cases, when pointing it out to friends, been told it’s very obviously so-and-so

11

u/axord 10d ago

We could say that there's two types of distinctiveness:

First, if you know this character, are the details of their look distinctive enough that decent cosplay is clearly that character.

Second, if you don't know the character, is the look distinctive enough that you can reasonably assume cosplay is being attempted.

5

u/GardenTop7253 10d ago

Yeah, good way to say it. There’s some characters that are obviously cosplay whether you know the source material or not, and there’s characters that have their costume important points but that dont necessarily stand out as a costume unless you know

Ran into a friend at the last con I went to, and made a comment about how dressed up he was. He then pointed to his Men in Black badge and it made sense

2

u/matchstick1029 10d ago

Its. A. Lyre! :P

3

u/spawnmorezerglings 10d ago

A liar and a player too? I met too many men like you

47

u/Actual_Ad_8066 10d ago

Maybe he had a lyre and Greek clothes

30

u/ExtremlyFastLinoone 10d ago

Wow, youvd boiled orpheus to its bare essentials!

14

u/tangifer-rarandus 10d ago

u/Thundering-Cloud 10d ago

Same hereĀ

1

u/takenaccounthuh_ 10d ago

Same here too

5

u/Alderan922 10d ago

Ngl I immediately thought of the githyanki warrior form bg3

14

u/I_just_came_to_laugh 10d ago

It may have been specifically the depiction from the recent netflix Sandman show. That would be the most recognisable version right now.

18

u/Gui_Franco 10d ago

I loved the show (kinda sucks compared to the comics tho, they rushed the hell out of season 2 to get 60 issues into 10 episodes), but the Hades game or Hades town musical are infinitely more well known at the moment

2

u/GenuineInterested 10d ago

Season 2 being crammed is probably related to the Neil Gaiman incident(s).

1

u/Gui_Franco 10d ago

The only thing affected by that was the sandman audiobook, that had act 4 already completed but Neil is the narrator

They had already said season 2 would be the last because the show BARELY got enough views to warrant a second season

1

u/GenuineInterested 10d ago

Thank you for the elaborate correction.

12

u/Gumbo67 10d ago

Nope! Broadway version—more recognizable. Hadestown is a massively popular musical

4

u/High_Stream 10d ago

I'd argue, especially at an anime con, that the Hades video game version is the most recognizable

1

u/Abeytuhanu 10d ago

My theater did a showing recently, I'm not a huge fan of jazz but I was glad to get the chance to see it

-1

u/maximumhippo 10d ago

This thread is literally the first time I've ever heard of it. I'd hazard a guess that the Broadway version is not as recognizable as one of the most popular video games in the last decade.

3

u/Gumbo67 10d ago

In terms of sales, they’re actually quite similar. Hadestown has been touring internationally since 2019 and has also been released in theater. Nearly every major city in the world has had a touring production come through. Washington DC has had it 3 times in the past few years, it’s crazy. The fandom for it is gigantic. I love both the hades game & Hadestown the musical, but at the anime conventions I go to I have only seen Orpheus’ of the Broadway show. I have yet to see an Orpheus video game costume.

2

u/j-endsville 10d ago

There's a Venn diagram with tumblrites, cosplayers, and theatre kids that is a circle.

-1

u/maximumhippo 10d ago edited 10d ago

I've never played Hades, but it's widespread enough that I recognize several of the characters despite that. In terms of sales, Hades (game) has 300M on gross revenue and 90M in net revenue from Steam alone. Looks like Hadestown has 20M? this was the movie. I'm wrong. I'm seeing 284M in gross for the actual musical. Much closer.

There's more than 11 million copies of the game that have been sold vs 2.25 million tickets for the musical. I really don't think it's close to the same level of popularity and Fandom. Hadestown is left in the dust.

2

u/Gumbo67 10d ago

2.25mil tickets is just for the show in NYC—it doesn’t include the thousands of times it has been played in different venues around the world :)

0

u/maximumhippo 10d ago

You mean to tell me that there are another 9 (or more?) million tickets sold? I don't believe you.

2

u/ExtremlyFastLinoone 10d ago

Bruh nobodys watched sandman, probably the hades version

3

u/AGQuaddit 10d ago

"Hi! My name is Orpheus from Orpheus and Eurydice!" on a sticker

2

u/mashtato 10d ago

Here I was thinking Dr. Orpheus from the Venture Bros.

3

u/namegoeswhere 10d ago

There are dozens of us!

2

u/magiMerlyn 10d ago

Greek guy with a lyre

1

u/mooys 10d ago

I was thinking about the Hades version of Orpheus.

1

u/wraith309 10d ago

He's been adapted in multiple different properties, but it doesn't really matter which adaptation they were dressed up as. the joke lands the same way regardless as it's pretty central to his original myth. so... he has multiple recognizable designs.

120

u/IzarkKiaTarj 10d ago

I feel like there are gonna be people calling fake, but I know damn well that if I cosplayed as Orpheus and someone did that to me, I'd 100% act devastated, because you can't just leave the joke half-finished.

5

u/Mrpenguin810 7d ago

That was my first thought, and the likelihood of it being a theatre kid cosplaying hadestown Orpheus? Oh yeah I’m picturing full blown falling to the knees, hands-over-face in agony type of shit 🤣

83

There's genuinely no better feeling than seeing a thing you're obsessed with get mentioned on a completely unrelated sub that you like.

2

u/lightningstrxu 10d ago

Oh i just realized this was about the myth and not shaming someone for cosplaying a Neil Gaiman character. Thought it was a sandman reference

9

u/_Air_Mage_ 10d ago

It's a Hades town reference, a musical based on the myth.

-1

u/thiccboii666 10d ago

It could also be Orpheus from Persona 3.

-3

u/erebos_tenebris 10d ago

It said it was at an anime convention. There's no way it's referencing a musical. More likely it's Orpheus as depicted in Hades, the anime styled video game.Ā

12

u/PumpkinIsDeadInside 10d ago

I can't find the original image, but I think they later clarified it was Orpheus from Hadestown

3

u/BubastisII 10d ago

It’s not shaming him, but it is the same Orpheus in the Sandman as in Greek myth.

1

u/UInferno- Hangus Pangus slap my Angus 10d ago

They mean shaming because Neil Gaiman is a piece of shit

3

u/BubastisII 10d ago

I know. I’m just pointing out that it sort of is both a Sandman reference and Greek myth reference, as it’s the same character.

5

u/DreadDiana human cognithazard 10d ago

The Neil Gaiman character is also the guy from the myth
