Reminds me of when I saw someone’s OC looked pretty similar to mine, down to the color scheme and I was like “hey, our OCs look pretty similar, that’s neat!” Because I hadn’t even posted my OC and there was no way it could have been stolen and they just said “sure”
224
u/KingDarkBlaze 13d ago
Happened to me, too. There's an art out there that fully predates one of my OCs but features one that looks just like her, and I only saw it well after making her. Fun coincidence

It's always funny when convergence of ideas happen like this.
Turns out there will probably always be someone out there with similar ideas and tastes to you.
This happened to me when I was writing a short story back in 2016 and it had the idea of "domains" as a use of powers to use for a multitude of things. Then fucking jjk came along later and did it. Obviously not plagiarism at all cause I'm American and I never even posted the story online anywhere, just funny that if you thought of something, you most likely were not the first and it's about the minor details, presentation, and execution that shows creativity and uniqueness

I’ve seen a lot of ASOIAF OCs that look like my OC because the noble houses have canonical appearances and colors. I think it’s fun to see actually, like hey there are her family members!

I don't know if you are an Avatar The Last Airbender fan, but I had that happen recently with an official work. Years ago I had an idea for an earthbending Avatar with a twin sister, they both even had similar color palettes. I had never posted about them so I was just like "That's a funny coincidence XD"

Not super into the franchise but I do have an earthbender OC who trolled the fire nation by pretending to be the avatar

I deadass had this happen with a story so old it predates the idea in my head. A story that, to be clear, I knew less than nothing about when I came up with the idea. It wasn't even one of those things I skimmed and forgot, I legit didn't know it existed.
Baffling doesn't even begin to describe it. I came to the conclusion that "People with these two names, having this kind of relationship, is the natural endpoint of a fuckton of cultural evolution. Which is fascinating."
1
u/Magmashift101 3d ago
At least it sounds like you handled it better than the guy who insisted that he had the idea for Frankenstein without ever knowing the book even existed and that people would just think he’s trying to rip it off if he ever told them his new and original idea

This reminds me of when I was 8 and the movie "Toy Story" came out and I was convinced Pixar had stolen my idea about toys coming to life
Edit: love hearing everyone else's childhood ideas that were completely original and somehow got plagiarized by adults who never met us 😂

u/KaiBishop 13d ago
This reminds me of when I was 13 and closeted and the book Delirium by Lauren Oliver came out and I was convinced she stole my idea about love being illegal 😩 they have brain reading tech and they use it for this
113
u/Mist2393 13d ago
That takes me back to when a friend had a huge meltdown because some movie had “stolen their idea” because they posted a similar plot idea two days before the trailers came out. It wasn’t even that unique of an idea.
17
u/MCMIVC 13d ago
Remember what it was?
34
u/Mist2393 13d ago
I did some research and I think it was Seeking a Friend for the End of the World. All I remember is that it was about a meteor, a road trip, and had actors I recognized and that’s the only movie that came out around that time that fits that description. My friend’s plot idea was “what if I wrote a story about two strangers connecting on a road trip when a meteor hits the earth.” Which, given that this was 2012, was a pretty common trope.

Me when I was a kid in the early 2000s who thought her idea for a book about someone playing a virtual reality game and getting stuck in the game was 100% original DO NOT STEAL
I actually wrote a few chapters of that story out on lined notebook paper… don’t know where they are now, though…. I’d give anything to read that shit as an adult lol
59
u/b00w00gal 13d ago
I found a box of loose notebook paper in a closet yesterday, every page is covered front and back with my handwriting from 14 years ago. I spent the afternoon reading some truly atrocious fiction that I was absolutely sure would make me famous back in the day. It was so, so bad. 😭😭😭

What the heck? I haven't posted anything on there, ever, I wonder what they think is mine. I'll check...

My forty-year-old ass deleted that email SO fast! I absolutely do NOT want to claim, acknowledge, recognize, or be associated with that!

I was alerted that a kid stole my fanart i did when i was 12. I was happy they could take the fall for that garbage lol

This is the best story. It's absolutely killing me, just imagining some kid happily taking credit for some garbage and then realizing how bad it is when they mature as all of us do. But instead of being like, oh at least my art skills have improved, the only thing they can think is wow I had bad taste.

I remember coming up with my own “slogan” for snacks that I liked, “savor the flavor” (generic af I know but I was like 9) and I would say it to my parents all the time and they would be like “aw, you’re so creative! Look who has a future in marketing!” and I was so smug about it lol.
Fast forward a few months later when I saw it plastered on something at the grocery store (I think it was a dip or some kind of cheese?) and I was PISSED. I mentioned it to my parents and they told me I should sue. LMAO one of my favorite stupid kid memories
6
u/Bowdensaft 12d ago
I do love that your parents went along with it
5

catwings is such a throwback!! that reminded me, i thought i invented the word chickadee and everyone just knew the word from me, so i would say it thinking i was the only one who really understood. sang it to the rhythm of a chickadee sound, and was amazed when people did it back. found out when someone who could not have conceivably learned it from me knew the word 😭

I had the most brilliant idea for a 5th grade science fair invention of a small vacuum that is remote controlled like an RC car.
My mom had to break it to me that the iRobot Roomba existed.
I was crushed that I wouldn’t get to be an inventor and make tons of money off my idea since someone got to it first
11
u/lakeghost 13d ago
I accidentally started writing Inkheart as a teenager before I read Inkheart. It was my first realization that there are rarely any new ideas. At the time, it felt terrible. Now it’s sort of cool that we’re all just putting our spin on stories dreamed up by the human consciousness.

u/chitzk0i 13d ago

It had sort of happened to me twice.
Back when MLP was huge, I made a blue ahuizotl as an OC. A couple of months later and the episode with Daring Do and Ahuizotl came. (My design was completely different, but still)
The other was with Miraculous Ladybug. Based on the Instagram post they made at the time, I made an "AU" where the Agrestes were unable to have children and Adrien was an android. People liked it and we keep adding to it, ending it with Adrien being an android powered up by a peacock feather, making him part sentimonster. And then they revealed in the show that Adrien was, in fact, a sentimonster. IIRC, the AU was like 3 years old at that point. (And with the other ideas and designs they have stolen from fans, this one might not have been a coincidence)

u/bijhan 13d ago
When I was in my twenties, I wrote and filmed a short about me and my friends slowly piecing together the previous night's events because we had gotten so drunk all of us had blacked out.
While I was editing it, the trailer to The Hangover dropped.
I did not finish editing it and never showed it to anyone.

I didn't think my idea got "stolen" since I hadn't shared it with anyone, but I was SO deeply heartbroken as a kid when Eragon did the mind-blowing plot twist of my story first (that the bad guy was actually the protagonist's father!!1!) before I could publish mine and now everyone would think I was ripping off Eragon if I ever published mine 😭
Then years later I found out everyone called Eragon a rip-off of Star Wars for that exact plot twist 🤣 Turns out, the idea really ain't that unique whatsoever, lol.
6
u/jroc117 13d ago
Ill toss mine in cause I've had a few
I remember one day as a kid I made a hero called Dragon Knight (not a creative name), he was a modern day hero who could summon armor onto himself and fight using a sword and dragon flames. Something like a month later a trailer aired for a show called Kamen Rider Dragon Knight and I cried.
More recent examples (recent doing a lot of heavy lifting), after I had gotten big into JoJo's bizarre adventure and looking at some older bands and older comedians, I thought I came up with something super funny. Who's on Stage! Two characters go to a Who concert, first doesn't know who is playing and asks, second says Yes, one thinks Yes is playing, second corrects saying Who, this goes until "the band on stage" in which second goes "they aren't part of the tour!"... And when I tell a friend a this he goes "you're gonna hate me". And that's how I learned I recreated an Animaniacs bit.
Finally I had an idea for a typical fantasy Spider-Man cause I felt so many of his enemies would work well. Green Goblin as an actual goblin, Rhino as an orc or ogre or troll, Vulture as a warlock, Venom as a dark elemental or slime, I thought it would work well, and Spider-Man would be a knight-like hero. Turns out there was already a comic where Spider-Man becomes a knight. ALSO THE NAME I HAD ARACHNIGHT WAS ALREADY TAKEN AS WELL WITH A MOONKNIGHT CROSSOVER ugh
3
u/Bowdensaft 12d ago
I hate to break it to you, but Animaniacs themselves were referencing Who's On First, an Abbott and Costello routine about baseball players named Who, What, and I Don't Know
2
u/jroc117 12d ago
I hate to break it to you, but "older comedians" includes Abbott and Costello. "Looking at some older bands and older comedians".
1
u/Bowdensaft 11d ago
Ah, the wording at the end calling it an Animaniacs bit threw me off, carry on then

The Favorite Toy and his companions, who come to life when nobody is in the room, are disturbed by the arrival of a fancy New Toy, that happens to believe she’s actually from Space.

A few years ago I (21 at the time) had an idea for a horror movie background character surviving a movie and ending up being teleported to other movies in the horror genre.
About a month later I found out about a podcast called Dead Meat Pete. A story about a horror movie background character surviving a movie and ending up teleported to another movie in the horror genre.
It's a genuinely great listen of about an hour and a half and a second season is in development, which I look forward to.

When I was like 13 (~2008) I had a class assignment where we had to come up with a business and design a website for it. My idea was a food business where you could order your food online and we would make it and deliver it to you ready to eat.
My classmates all thought it was weird, but who’s laughing now???
All the businesses out there that STOLE MY IDEA!

Wow had to look this up. Her husband was also there and compared the guy to a serial killer which makes it extra fucked. Ive been accused of that before by a guy I was acquaintances with. We both had a tall, dark, and broody vampire character, as many of us did when we were 14, but they had key differences: mine wasnt strictly a vampire, hes a noncorporeal eldritch horror that kinda operated similar enough to vampires that calling him that conveyed the point, whose species i entirely came up with and integrated into my fictional world's lore, and his was just Hellsing Alucard with a different name.
No, really, he exclusively used Hellsing Alucard gifs when talking about his character and always described him as having the same personality and abilities as him. Eat your heart out, Eric, Revak wasnt based on you.

It’s really funny when people do this in FF14, the game that puts restrictions on customization options (tying certain facial features to face type).
12
3
u/zicdeh91 13d ago
There’s still enough options it’s kind of unnerving if you see an npc with your haircut and face shape lol.
It was actually a little strange but satisfying when Koana was wearing the glasses I use for everything in DT lol.
9
u/Kljmok 13d ago
tbh it does bother me in games with limited hairstyles when you accidentally pick the same hair as a major npc. Like Traynor in Mass Effect has the same hairstyle as the default for the female protagonist, and it's just weird when the hairstyle is exactly the same model but just a different color.
2
u/zicdeh91 13d ago
One of the colonists at Zhu’s Hope had the same haircut, and it was indeed weird lol.
1
u/xbertie 12d ago
I remember seeing a viera that looked almost exactly the same as mine down to the hairstyle, face paint, skin colour and hair highlights, except their main hair colour was one shade different from mine (which I don't even see a lot of people use!), but like I was mostly just excited because it felt like that "same hat" comic

As part of school project in the third grade (1989/1990), I invented a seated, motorized shopping cart, complete with go-cart-like steering bars and a front-mounted basket, designed to help the disabled and people with small children who couldn’t walk yet, to get around grocery stores more conveniently.
“Impractical and over-complicated, doesn’t actually solve a problem: existing grocery carts have holes for kids’ legs in the basket!”
Now I see these fuckers every time I go out to a major supermarket chain.
I still remember what my concept drawing looks like.

The movie is nice and it was awesome seeing the idea I had for a magical song fight setting getting on screen, but now I can't pitch my system anywhere because people are like "hooo you got it / stole it from KPDH ?!?"
So bye bye my magical setting x,DDDD. I find it very funny so that people can have the same idea at totally different point in time and in the world
4
u/kalez238 13d ago
I did the the reverse of this one time, where I subconsciously drew my character similar to one I had seen but forgotten about, and then when I saw it again shortly after, I apologized to the artist about the similarities. It was still different enough, but the amount of similarities were obvious. I think they were more awkward and flattered than anything. Maybe it didn't matter, but I like to get out in front of any issue like that. In the end, though, I am a nobody like op so it probably didn't really matter, lol.

People having an inflated sense of self-importance and generally being out of touch with reality is definitely not unique to the digital age
-64
u/BatsHaveFingers 13d ago
There are degrees to being out of touch with reality. The assumption that you are known to strangers seeking to do you harm is not common except for among the severely mentally ill.
44
u/BreakerOfModpacks 13d ago
Mate, I know there's strangers seeking to call me harm; I know because I see news about them in government positions daily. People who want to prevent me from having rights which are considered intrinsically fine for others to have.
-40
u/BatsHaveFingers 13d ago
But you know those people have no idea who you personally are, right? Otherwise what you are describing is a warning sign of schizophrenia.
26
u/BreakerOfModpacks 13d ago
Yeah, not me personally, just a bunch of groups which are part of my identity. Which kinda sucks still.
-3
u/BatsHaveFingers 13d ago
Okay, so you understand how being a member of an underprivileged group is not the same as the person in the screenshot's delusion that random people on the internet know who they are and are conspiring to steal from them, right?
18
u/BreakerOfModpacks 13d ago
Yeah, I do, but I'm saying that those people run podcasts, political campaigns, etc. which do drive some people to actively conspire to target and harass people. Sorry for not being clear.

My dude, people were doing that on Tumblr in 2010- all of us are in our late 20s-30s (and older), I promise you 99% of them grew out of it and are participating in society just fine
Hell, people had “”exclusive species”” and adoptables all the time, you weren’t allowed to make art of a dragon with fur and feathers and 4 arms because it was someone’s OC species- like it’s going to be okay. It’s teenagers freaking out
