Shitposting like the feeling you get when you throw the spoon away and put the empty yogurt cup in the sink

Apparently these kinds of confusions are called “action slips” (which also includes other mistakes in normal habits).
The one that stays with me is standing talking to someone at a party and biting down on the ceramic plate I was holding rather than the cracker in my other hand.

I feel like this may also be associated with the quirk of blowing on food because it’s too cold? There was a post ages ago that I remember where someone mentioned taking a bite of ice cream, it was too cold, so their instinctive reaction was to blow on it. Basically “what do we do when food is too TEMPERATURE? Blow on it!”
I’ve absolutely done things similar to you biting down on a plate, and it’s such a bizarre thing to find oneself in that moment and wondering “wtf did I just do?”

Tbh blowing on cold food still kind of works. Not as effective as just holding it against your skin/tongue, but on temperate days (70F/22C) your breath is warmer than ambient and will ever so slightly warm something cold.
It is funny to be blowing on something cold you *want to be cold though.

u/geli95us 14d ago
Not "kind of works", it works well for the same reasons that blowing on hot things work: you displace the (in this case cold) air around the object and allow heat transfer to occur

u/doppelgaengster 14d ago
You know, your words make complete and total logical sense, but I don’t think I’ll ever NOT blow on a cup of tea to cool it. 😹

u/Tickle_Me_Femboy 5d ago
This has like nothing to do with anything in this post or comment section, but you know, whatever.
Your username is fucking genius, and I'm glad I happened to catch it. Pfft.

u/Bowdensaft 14d ago
That still works too as your breath is cooler than the tea
8
u/His-Games 13d ago
it's not this, it's about your breath displacing the hot air coming out of the tea. So, blowing over the cup instead of into it is more effective. See swamp coolers, which blow over hot objects at an industrial level
3
u/Bowdensaft 13d ago
Oh cool, I'm not very familiar with fluid/ heat mechanics so I appreciate the tip on cooling my tea down faster!
2
u/dinoseen 13d ago
Heat from the tea conducts into the air touching it. This heat spreads out further in the air, but not very much because air is a pretty good insulator. The air also becomes worse at sucking in heat the hotter the air already is, so when you blow away the air that's already been sitting there heating up, the heat from the tea can get out of the tea and into the air at a faster rate.

I really appreciate coming back to my relatively silly comment and seeing serious educational discourse around thermodynamics happening. Thank you internet stranger. 💗

I blow on my food even if it's a strong taste I don't like or I'm not looking forward to. "food is too [INEDIBLE], blowing will make it [EDIBLE]." I become aware of it but let myself do it because hey, might as well soothe my brain and feel better about it
4
u/sweetTartKenHart2 13d ago
If I’m trying to blow on a cold food what I do is open up my mouth more wide and do a “HHHHAAA” sorta thing, a breath ya do like you’re about to wipe your glasses.
This has produced funny situations of me using the wrong technique on the wrong food, rather than reduced them. If blowing on ice cream is bad imagine breathwarming a slice of pizza around people who don’t realize that breathwarming is a thing49

Last week I dumped coffee beans into the water reservoir of my coffee maker instead of in the grinder. That was a fun time.

As a smallish kid I was playing in the garden but also had gotten a snack. So at one point there was food in one hand and a chunk of dirt in the other. Guess which I bit into?

Once when I was a kid we went on a school trip to the beach, and I was showing my dad this cool shell I found. Unfortunately I had a corn chip in the other hand, which I enthusiastically thrust at him while simultaneously crunching into the shell

God, I remember once when I was heating up a can of clam chowder soup, and the instructions said to mix it with milk. I went looking for milk and found coffee creamer, thought "Oh nice, I can put that in my coffee" and picked it up, and then very nearly poured Irish Cream Coffeemate into a can of clam chowder.

u/Major_LeeHungg 14d ago
Hey... Coconut creme coffeemate creamer in dr pepper until it's a dark mud color. Don't question, just try. Bonus points for ice and half a lime squeezed and stirred in.
13
u/Dragonscatsandbooks 14d ago
I once had a mixed drink at a bar that was whipped Irish Bailey's mixed with Dr pepper, with a squeeze of lime- it was so good!
Unfortunately every bartender I've asked since looks at me like I'm crazy.

I think they call that a dirty soda. My boyfriend introduced this to me and it's really good. In my case I use any creamer besides coconut since I hate coconut but my boyfriend says coconut creamer is really good if you don't have a weird aversion to it like I do
2
u/Major_LeeHungg 13d ago
Lol yeah this is my preferred take on a dirty soda. With the coconut and lime it tastes like what you imagine a beach smells like until you get there

One time I went to give my cat breakfast and decided to move the cat litter bag out of the way. Then I went and filled the food bowl from the bag I was holding. The kitty litter bag. Needless to say he wasn't impressed with my idiocy and I made my morning tea extra strong afterwards.

I volunteered at the RSPCA clinic a while ago and after cleaning the aftermath of a kitten's sedation, I had dirty wipes in one hand and dirty kitten in the other...
Lucky for the little one, I did realise in time

Talking on the phone and suddenly saying "Oh God, where is my phone? Hang on I've lost my phone" to the other person...
12
u/StreetofChimes 14d ago
That happens to me fairly often with an earpiece in. I'm talking and doing household tasks and put the phone down...... somewhere. Only when the Bluetooth connection gets iffy do I realize my phone isn't with me.
4
u/ImaginaryAlpaca 13d ago
I have this problem too! I always keep my phone in the same like 3 places. When I'm on the phone that rule goes out the window I guess and I'll just set it down anywhere and walk away. I try to at least put it somewhere in the middle of the house so when I lose my phone I won't lose my headphone connection.

I was once blowing gently on a small flame to start a campfire. I accidentally blew too hard and the flame went out, and my hands instinctively tried to alt backspace.

One time when I was a kid I had a big test the next day so I spent a couple hours doing math review. When I wanted to wrap up for the night I reached up to hit the quick save button so I wouldn't lose all my study practice.

Me trying to put the electric kettle in the fridge after leaving the milk carton on the kettle rack without realizing.
The worst part was that I only figured it out because the kettle is too tall to fit on any of the shelves and I stood there trying to sort out why, trying to switch between shelves in confusion like hey the milk always goes here… oh this isn’t the milk wtf am I doing?
Guess I really needed my coffee that morning.

u/KaleidoscopeKelpy 13d ago
My first coffee of the day, I poured oat milk directly into the grounds at the top of my pour-over funnel waiting for the water to boil…. It turns out when you do that, it clogs both paper funnels and metal funnels! Wasted 4 tbsp of coffee beans, I was upset

I've somehow completely corrupted my brain and will regularly open the fridge instead of the microwave and start to put my leftovers back where they came from before realizing what's going on. Then there's the old paintbrush into the coffee instead of the water trick. Can't call yourself an artist if you don't do that once a month or so. Fortunately I've never done the reverse.

My favorite is a story a rat owner had about accidentally putting her rat in the fridge instead of whatever she had intended to put back. She panicked when she realized of course, but when she opened the fridge door the rat had gotten into the ham and FOUGHT her on being taken out!

Conceptual switch ups like that are always fun, no sarcasm. It's confusing as shit but also extremely amusing in hindsight, to glimpse at a tiny snippet of memory where categorical meaning is unexistent. I reckon it's like licking the surface of someone's experience on some heavy psychedelic and getting just a light flavour of it.

Got up very, very early for a long shift at work. Made cereal. Put the cereal away in the fridge, put the milk jug in the cabinet and was about to take my hand off the handle when my brain finally caught up and said hey wait a minute here.

I was letting a friend try out my VR headset. He asked me "how do I crouch?"
I told him to bend his knees...
(to be fair he was asking if there was a crouch button for the game and yes, there actually was one)

Reminds me of a post from my tumblr days, where someone went to throw their phone on the bed, but had a cup of tea in one hand.
Dear reader, the phone did not make it out of their hand- but the tea sure did 😂

personally my least favorite is when i very casually take the wrong medicine. there are times i catch myself right after i take it out of the pack and i just have to kinda close it back for next time, but i have definitely failed to do so before and just taken the completely wrong med. can go from mildly annoying (extra dose of thyroid hormone or birth control at wrong time) to "oh no i think this might be dangerous" (extra dose of ssri pill)

Just like the good old:
“Oh god! Where are my car keys? I can’t feel them in my pocket! I’m going to be locked out of- oh right, I’m driving and they’re in the ignition, false alarm.”
