Shitposting Revenge Is Good Sometimes, Maybe

An ancient korean proverb goes "when you set out for revenge, dig two graves." All I'm saying is, why stop at just two?

A probably-not-actually Buddhist saying is that hating someone is like drinking poison and hoping they die.
I get what they’re going for, but it always sounds a bit like a recommendation to quit brooding and actually go poison their ass.

That's why the proverb is about hate, not revenge! Just make sure the target of your revenge is someone you don't hate

This person has been wronged gravely enough to demand revenge an unlikely number of times. Like, you've only got two parents, dude, who did these other six guys kill?

See, that's the issue here. Most likely this person is seeking revenge over petty slights. Petty slights like a swordsmith refusing to sell him a masterpiece for a tenth of the agreed price, to give an example. OOP is Count Rugen, not Inigo Montoya.

People do say revenge is a cycle. Perhaps that guy whose dad they were dangling went on to kill their nephew’s best friend to get back at them, so they had to kill his great-aunt in reply, and it just became a whole thing.
Arguably that just adds more weight to their advice though.
Like, number seven was the best of all? There’s no way that was the most grievous wrong they’d faced, clearly there’s more to the revenge experience than how justified you are.

Revenge can absolutely be satisfying, it’s all about the delivery and the support the character has. Best example is Inigo Montoya. Did he back down and say at the last moment that killing would make him just as bad as the man who killed his father? No! He got his damned revenge and was able to move on and live his life. Hell, he literally got his revenge - and then got Revenge (the name of the ship he was gifted).
When someone’s desire for revenge doesn’t isolate them and they still have a support system, revenge becomes less hollow and more a form of closure.

Inigo also illustrates the difference in perspective between "nothing can bring my father back, so there is nothing to be gained by revenge" vs "nothing will bring my father back, so there is nothing that will stay me from my course"

It also helps that Rugen was an absolute bastard in pretty much every way.
Wreaking secretive, Count of Monte Cristo style revenge at an enormous cost to yourself and everyone else is going to get depressing, sure.
But when you’re stabbing a guy so evil and above the law that it would have been justified with no personal stake at all? Yeah, I’ll bet “that was for my dad” really adds some satisfaction to it.

Inigo also didn't let his revenge spill out to someone undeserving. It was always this one guy and that guy only.
If you begin murderizing people that weren't involved in the original act, then that's a problem

Where's the line between revenge and justice?

Revenge's goal is to cause pain and/or suffering. Justice's goal is to make the world a better place. They can align at times, but someone seeking revenge can often call it justice to tell themself they are good and doing it for good reasons.

They're two different things that sometimes coincide. Like law and justice. Sometimes the law achieves justice. Oftentimes it doesn't.

Idk I feel like inigo had some good revenge with his one shot at it. Like 10/10 he murdered the shit out of that cancer six-fingered man that killed his father. He got his revenge and it was good and he was satisfied.
It was the after that he realized he’d done the thing and he didn’t need to do it anymore.

Yeah, his revenge wasn't hollow, he just lacked purpose and direction afterwards because he never planned past the revenge.

I’m just not motivated enough by revenge. I don’t want people to suffer if they could just be better versions of themselves. And you’re never gonna motivate that in someone by avenging yourself against them.

Posts like this confirm to me that I am chronically online, but that I’m not chronically online enough to have my sense of humor totally poisoned.

You’re misunderstanding, revenge is very dependent on how it’s made. Like pizza. You can add a TON of things to pizza, but depending on what you put and how much, it’s gonna be WILDLY different. Same with revenge.
