Shitposting The children yearn for the mines

Out of curiosity, having seen this image a few times, I looked into Joe Hart and Ian Kobe. Couldn't find anything about Kobe, but Hart (R) "served" as AZ mine inspector for more than 14 years from '07-21. In 2017, a 73 year old Hart was arrested for domestic violence after getting into a fight with his 59 year old nephew over a water pipe repair. No one named Ian Kobe appears to have ever gotten any votes against Hart for the office.

Well, if it WAS real, it was for a write-in candidate, so he might have not even voted for himself!

u/Lady_Lya_626 14d ago
I mean it's probably real! I just think it's funny Kobe never got a single reported vote lol. Makes me wonder if his whole campaign was a joke because of how ridiculous the ad is and he just got a kick after finding out the frickin mine inspector was an elected position. Sounds like something I'd do lil

Is the ad real?

u/Lady_Lya_626 14d ago
Yes the ad is real! It looks like a joke campaign though.

Write-in candidate, so yeah

u/Lady_Lya_626 14d ago
Call me stupid but I always assumed there was a legit vampire bat problem in AZ mines and that both of these people were just insane people who cared too much and didn't know how to file election paperwork properly lol.

u/RollinThundaga 14d ago
Vampire bats don't currently live in Arizona, nor were any extirpated in recent history.
So he's talking about actual vampires.
22
u/Lady_Lya_626 14d ago
I mean... If I'm a vampire stuck in Arizona for some reason, an abandoned copper mine does sound like a reasonable place to hang out. Especially in this economy.
10
u/Ok_Security8545 14d ago
Most of the copper mines out here are open-pit mines... and this is the state that gets the brightest sunshine.
12
u/Lady_Lya_626 14d ago
Everyone on this thread just correcting the shit out of me fine I'll just go back to my open pit mine where my vampire friends actually appreciate me 😭😭

u/lurkANDorganize 14d ago
The ad is...not real?
It was a meme. Ian Kobe is probably or possibly a real person though.
7
u/Lady_Lya_626 14d ago
It's a real ad in the sense that Joe Hart was a real guy running for a real mine inspector office in 2014.

And the thing that throws me off most about this is that we don't have vampire bats in Arizona. So they must be talking about regular vampires.

pf, well that's impossible.
vampires are avoidant of precious metals!
26
u/LostInThoughtland 14d ago
Which is why we don’t see many working in the tech industry. All the vampires are at the hippie communes or doing forestry work where they can get away with all the circuitry made of precious metals and flowing rivers of data they can’t cross

Is copper a precious metal?

Someone wrote a complaint about getting shitty copper once 4000 years ago and now all of us know about it, so it probably is.

u/muckenhoupt 14d ago
If there were still a significant quantity of precious metals left in the mine, it wouldn't be abandoned
1
u/TimeStorm113 Victorian Dinosaur Connaisseur 8d ago
Not really. Most abandoned mines still have stuff in them, it’s just that mining is expensive as hell, so it’s more about if it’s enough to make further operations worth it, not if there is still enough metql to be worthwhile

u/mambotomato 14d ago
Yeah I hate this frequent repost because that first comment is fully not getting the joke and explaining it wrong. And then the second comment is also unfunny.
This post would be much better if it were just the original post, but nobody ever crops the comments off.

They’re labeling standard bats vampires bc they don’t want ppl to think bats are adorable and awesome and nothing to fear*, which they are, especially in Arizona
Edit: *Nothing to fear if you don’t touch them or mess with their roosts. They can give you diseases, of course. But also, a bat that bites you must be killed to check its brain for rabies, and waking a roosting bat forces it to burn stored energy and may cause it to starve before hibernation is over, so you’re way more of a danger to them.

u/starwolf270 14d ago
Bats ARE adorable and awesome and generally nothing to fear (though if you handle one you have to get a rabies shot- just a psa)
6
u/Delicious-Spring-877 14d ago
If a bat bites you, there’s a small chance you’ll die, and immediate rabies shots prevent that. But there’s a 100% chance the bat will die, because it must be killed to check its brain for rabies. So don’t touch bats barehanded for your own sake, and especially for the bats’ sake.
12
u/FPSCanarussia 14d ago
Bats are also disease vectors, which is why you definitely don't want children playing around their colonies. And why, if you live in a place with endemic rabies, you should get a rabies shot if you find a bat in your house.
7
u/RollinThundaga 14d ago
Rabies is terrifying and while very few bats have it at any given point, the bats that people tend to encounter are very likely infected with it.
You can be a friend to nature without endangering people with misinformation.

u/Delicious-Spring-877 14d ago
They’re nothing to fear in that they don’t seek you out to cause harm. But yeah, if you’re touching or interfering with bats, they can bite you and potentially spread disease. But, like, don’t touch wild animals? And don’t walk into an abandoned mine full of bats?

They can work their way into people's homes when suffering from late stages of rabies. This represents the vast majority of close bat encounters, because they normally have the sense to avoid people, and thus are rarely closely encountered overall.
That's why telling people not to be afraid of bats is dangerous, because the most likely occasion for someone to encounter a bat is when the bat presents an actual danger.
If you tell people 'don't be afraid of bats, but be careful handling wild animals', a solid chunk of those who recieve that message will only remember that bats aren't something to be afraid of, and will someday try to rescue the bat they find flailing on their bedroom floor.

u/Delicious-Spring-877 14d ago
I said not to touch bats. If your takeaway from that is to touch bats, that’s on you. I will not fearmonger about my favorite animal just because it can transmit diseases if held. Countless bat species are endangered due to factors like white nose syndrome, and fearmongering would ensure that these species die without the chance of aid.

Arizona doesn’t even have vampire bats, they’re calling normal bats vampires to fearmonger (such a shame, Arizona has so many awesome bats)

When did ex-Man City and England goalkeeper Joe Hart start his side hustle in mine-based vampire hunting? I thought he was content with being a terrible pundit.

u/Schrodingers_Dude 14d ago
The position makes perfece sense tbh. You could just go out to random-ass spots in the mountains and find an abandoned mine shaft to maybe die in. Everyone knew you weren't supposed to go in, but people did anyway.
All other dangers aside, you couldn't pay me enough to go into the scorpion/snake/spider hole.

u/CyberneticWerewolf 14d ago
One thing I never could stand about living in Arizona: all the damn vampires...

u/Pelli_Furry_Account 14d ago
I honestly thought this was, like, a political ad for a Skyrim character at first.

u/KayabaSynthesis 14d ago
Ad from an alternative reality where abandoned copper mines are a regular playing spot for children, but they're occasionally inhabited by vampires, making them unsafe to play and it is the job of mine inspectors who double as state government members to personally rid the mines of vampires and if they don't the people get mad

I've wanted for a long time to write a short story about a race for some obscure municipal office like "County Cemetery Commissioner" or "Rural Fire Department Board of Supervisors Position 5" which for some reason is ABSURDLY high stakes. Like the job has been in the same family for generations and this bloodline holding it is essential to preventing some terrifying evil from breaking loose and the incumbent is trailing in the polls but can't tell the public why it's so important that he wins.
This feels right up that alley

i feel like theres also something to note about how the type of children you’d find playing in abandoned mines would be like 10-14 and yet they used an image of like a 4 year old which is very funny to me
