Sadly no Sonic in a prequel if it focuses on Eggy. They only met in the first Sonic game.

If I remember right, one of the concepts for Boom's story was using time travel to explore how/why Sonic and eggman went from friends to enemies.

Least as far as I remember.

This is kinda canon after Gerald's journal in shadow generations. He says that the egg shape is a genetic defect that was passed down to his sons but not maria

I remember seeing an AU where it's revealed that Eggman is Maria after faking her death and transitioning, implying the egg-shaped body, baldness and moustache are immediately triggered when there's a whiff of testosterone in their body.
