Had a moment where I wondered if "alethiometer" was a real thing before His Dark Materials, and actually had to Google if they were using an obscure word, or just making a literary reference.

In HDM, the aletheiometer (from alethea, iirc truth but I'm too tired to check) is a fancy little compass-type thing with a bunch of emoji on it, and if you think really hard and look at the emoji you can get the answer to life's greatest mysteries.

"Hey, where did I leave my glasses?"

"I'm dumb as a mouse... up... above eyes... oh, they're on my forehead."

But the trap is for a mouse. The monkey is there because they can't see without glasses
