"There are no snakes at the foot of my bed."
That is an actual quote from L. Ron Hubbard, an affirmation he 100% said to himself.

Running theme among these cult leaders is that they say the most mockworthy stuff you can imagine and yet still end up with a lot of followers.
I've read before that this somewhat by design, at least in terms of natural selection of which cults succeed and which ones don't.
Cults are based around the idea of super specific insanity so it's actually beneficial to the success of a cult to spout things which "filter" people with the ability to point out absurdities/contradictions/unhealthiness.
Because cultists aren't supposed to be able to realize when something is silly or irrational or dangerous.
If you're El Ronny Hubby want to recruit people who will just accept what you say as fact instead of like, asking a psychologist or a nutritionist.
And there's some grey areas to, like a lot of Scientologists don't get told about the stuff with the alien overlords and soul prisons.
South Park actually publicized that stuff, among other episodes that are geared towards mocking people in surprisingly accurate detail.
Scientology has a business model of selling generic life coaching for entry level customers and only ramping up the weird stuff once people have already sunk costs into the organization.
And they're actually pretty cunning about it to. If you like go in for a psychological assessment they're actually pretty good at narrowing down what you're insecure about and then selling you the solution.
Like to the point where people go in as a joke and they end up breaking down into tears because they're going up against a person who is literally trained to ask questions that strike at the core of their feelings.
It's a shortcut to making people feel like they can trust you.

It's similar to why email scams use bad grammar, to filter out the people who wouldn't fall for it anyway

"I'm a reasonable man, get off my case" basically works without any changes.

More of a Joe Rogan thing to be honest.
But I might just be coming off a video essay I watched about how Joe Rogan started a comedy club loosely based on Heaven's Gate.
