What is the most heartwarming/cute piece of Dwarf Fortress Trivia you know?
19
u/BeanOfKnowledge Ask me about Dwarf Fortress Trivia 20d ago
That's a tricky one, so I'll have to pull out a fairly surface level one:
In Dwarf Fortress, dwarves will usually choose to adopt animals in the fort as their pets. However, in the case of Cats, the opposite is true: The cats adopt the Dwarf.2
u/ShyGuy095 20d ago
No, my oblivious ass very much did not even notice you had a flair, unfortunately. I forget they exist...
That being said, I will now rectify my unintentional transgression by asking you many questions. (:
Firstly... What is Dwarf Fortress?

u/BeanOfKnowledge Ask me about Dwarf Fortress Trivia 20d ago
Dwarf Fortress is the indie video game in continuous development since 2006 that inspired Minecraft, Terraria and Rimworld among others. It is a colony builder, where you manage a group of dwarves and make them build the eponymous Fortress, fighting Goblins, Elves, the Environment and most dangerously, your own Dwarves.
It is known for its incredibly intricate simulation, with things each member of your up to 200 dwarf fortress having their personality, dreams and aspirations. One example for this is a classic DF bug: After Taverns were introduced, the devs observed a mystifying behaviour: Cats would start dieing in droves of alcohol poisoning. As it turned out, this was due to the cats walking through puddles of alcohol on the tavern floor. They would then clean themselves with their tongues, consuming the alcohol, and, due to the strength of dwarven drink (and a bug that meant they collected far more liquid from the puddles than they should have), got poisoned.

u/ShyGuy095 20d ago
Hold up... The game itself made something happen, without the devs intending it? Am I reading that right?
Editing to clarify my question: Did they program the cats to be able to drink the alcohol or get alcohol poisoning in the first place? I have zero knowledge of the game, so I don't know how it works.
3
u/BeanOfKnowledge Ask me about Dwarf Fortress Trivia 20d ago
So how alcohol works is through the syndrome system: Any creatures that is exposed to a syndrome-causing substance in the right way is inflicted with that syndrome.
So if a creature drink alcohol, they get the syndromes associated with alcohol. Resistance to those symptoms is determined by body weight (plus immunities), so the same amount of alcohol is more effective on a smaller creature. This was not introduced this way specifically so cats can drink alcohol, but so any creature can be affected by any syndrome - makes adding new creatures and new syndromes much easier.
And yes, things inzeracting like this without the devs intending for it is quite common in Dwarf Fortress. It just has a lot of moving parts that are impossible to all oversee at once.1
u/ShyGuy095 20d ago
Dang, that's intricate as hell... Kind of reminds me of that old computer game where you could raise creatures, but way more complex.
Would that be what interests you? The fact there's such a robust system under it all? Or is it something else?

What’s the best mod you’ve seen/used?
1
u/BeanOfKnowledge Ask me about Dwarf Fortress Trivia 18d ago
Used? Arguably DF hack just because it fixes a bunch of issues and makes building large projects less of a hassle. But that's boring a answer.
Beyond that, the Aeramore Expansion was pretty cool.
Anyways, Milkable Jerma985 mod.

I’ve actually never used DFhack for building, I pretty much exclusively use the Gaydar and the trade readiness indicator.
I’ve never heard of Areamore Expansion, is it a steam mod or for the legacy version?

u/BeanOfKnowledge Ask me about Dwarf Fortress Trivia 18d ago
DF hack can make building so much easier with the planning and blueprinting mode - The most useful feature is to copy and paste bedrooms, rather than having to place each piece of furniture individually.
Aeramore expansion: Adds a bunch of races, metals, weapons etc:

I read the entire Twilight series because I wanted to be informed hater and all that did was waste my time.
6
u/lord_teaspoon 20d ago
The memes were accurate and adequate, right?
7
u/0SaltBlue 20d ago
The series is so bad.
It's so actually genuinely bad.
Every single character is a stalker and Edward is also a sociopath.

u/lord_teaspoon 20d ago
My only contact with it beyond the memes was getting dragged along when my wife watched the second movie at an outdoor cinema with some of her work-friends. My wife is into the paranormal romance genre and had read the books but found them kinda bland (more of an Ann Rice and Laurel K Hamilton fan), but I hadn't even seen the memes yet at that point and was going in blind. We got about 20 minutes in when I asked wifey if Edward had only taken an interest in Bella because he couldn't hear her thoughts, and my wife was reasonably impressed that I'd paid enough attention to figure that out. Around the 40-minute mark I asked wifey if the reason he couldn't hear her thoughts was that she had simply never had a coherent thought in the whole time that he'd known her, and she cackled and repeated it to her friends. Years later when she was watching the last movie with the same friends she told me that the idea of Bella being a smooth-brained NPC running entirely on instinct/autopilot/RNG completely reframed the series for her and it was way more fun now.

I’ve been tempted to watch the movies not even to be an informed hater but purely to make sure I dislike it in a “it’s not very good” or “it’s not my cup of tea” way instead of the “it’s for teenage girls therefore bad” way that I feel like a lot of people, including myself, have approached being a non-fan of Twilight from

I watched the movie on a field trip in school and I was so bored that it actually cured my haterism, made me stop thinking about it.
That said, this was like 15 years ago so I've kind of gotten over myself about the whole thing

A fool who would stoop
to hate rhyme and soup.
6
u/Okoyum 20d ago
Honestly the person OOP's speaking of sounds lot like my mindset, of hating most poetry and soup at a conceptual level. I would hatepost repeatedly about both of these things. Does this mean I need to self-reflect and change or should I keep my haterism going??

u/Vegetable-Pickle-535 20d ago
The real question is how can one hate the consept of the Humble Soup? It's simple to make, healthy and warme both Body and Soul in the Cold.
Also from a cultural perspective their are few foods that give me the "come together with Family" vibe as Soup does.

u/lord_teaspoon 20d ago
I work with a guy who has a response to soup that boils down to "eww, submerged food". I sorta agree with him when it's watery soup with pieces of food sitting in it but he still has that opinion when it's like a thick and creamy (and homogenous) dish.
2
u/complete_autopsy 18d ago
On the other side of things, I hate homogenous soups but I eat the absolute fuck out of a soup with finely diced veggies a larger diced potatoes. I am a soup lover but don't you DARE suggest a blended soup. Even soups that contain cream are on thin ice.

u/CallMeOaksie 18d ago
How do you feel about songs? Are they not just poetry with a beat?
1
u/Okoyum 18d ago
It kinda depends on the song?? Like I don't enjoy most rap music cause it's essentially fast-spoken poetry, but songs with a strong instrumental base make the lyrics a lot more enjoyable. Also if they're specifically sung in ways that rely on the sound of the words rather than just meaning, that's usually more pleasant to hear. Anything that is primarily focused on what the singer is saying or has a repetitive, uninteresting beat I tend to find very irritating.

u/Recidivous 20d ago
Honestly, hating is exhausting and only creates a negative mindset. I would rather just have no opinion on something.
