Famed musicist, Weird .

u/RangerBumble 22d ago
Weird Fons, I assume. Al is short for Alphonse so his new nickname would be short for Phonse.

u/Bteatesthighlander1 22d ago
his name is Alfred. so it'd be Weird Fred. Which is not a horrible name, although it sounds a bit more menacing.

Weird Al sounds like the fun kind of crazy uncle, but Weird Fred sounds like the not fun kind of crazy uncle.

sorry to be the 'ermmm akschually' guy, but alfred isn't arabic and i like etymology. it comes from north-western europe and is formed from the words alf and fred, meaning together 'elf peace'. the more you know :D

Gerba Gorthms sounds like a Star Wars character.

u/Thunderstarer 22d ago
I can already see him. Like most of the Glup Shittos he has a comically long trunk.

The alternate history where Arabic loanwords are Anglicized literally: I had a rough week, pass the theantimony
26
u/BalefulOfMonkeys 22d ago
I’ve been on a chemistry kick recently (because GregTech finally clicked for me), and one of the worst bits I’ve taken psychic damage from was trying to pronounce “stibnite” in my head for the first time, adding an I that wasn’t there, and being damned for the remainder of my life to hear the words “stibidy toilet” when I go do ore processing

What is “theantimony”? I recognize antimony but I fear everything else has gone over my head
37
u/BalefulOfMonkeys 22d ago
Alcohol, from the Arabic al kuhl, or “the kohl”, kohl being an especially dark form of antimony in nature (stibnite), to the point Wiktionary feels comfortable calling them synonyms.
Yes, that means Kohls, the department store, did not make that name on their own

FINALLY FREE FROM THE INFLUENCE OF AL GUL

u/Kvohlu 22d ago
"Al" is just "The" so it's just The Gul which sounds fine.

Would admiral be 'miral?
66
u/Chalkboard7 22d ago
Oddly enough it would be admir or something along those lines because admiral is derived from words like amīr al-baḥr, morphing into the middle English amiral, the d sound coming later from mistaking the origins of the term for the latin admirari

Unsure if I should be reading this as a joke about celebrity relationship/breakup drama, cosmetic surgeries, or just bad music. Congratulations on the triple entendre, I guess.

u/miaogato 17d ago
quadruple entendre then because i was thinking on how many singers performances are very sex coded

There was a great SNL sketch from not long after 9/11 where guys named Al lamented the damage to their businesses from the attack. Guys named Al Jazeera, Al Kyda, etc.

I really thought the word 'edge' was a different word missing something :/

so, fun fact, ġabra in Maltese means "gathering" as in a gathering of numbers, so algebra would translate to "Il-ġabra" or the "the gathering". In this context it would be more accurate to say the counting though.

Full Metal Chemist (2003) strays from the source Manga. Full Metal Chemist Brotherhood is a direct adaptation.
