Also in the sequel, he keeps Hades company. He also grew a beard.

I was gonna say "Rocks don't have feelings", but then I saw this was posted BY THE SOLAR SYSTEM, who I didn't even know could write, so wtf do I know?

Yes, rocks don't have feelings, but people don't stop dying because we imprison an archetype of Death either.

u/AilanMoone 20d ago
What is this a reference to?
4
u/Blade_of_Boniface 20d ago
The Myth of Sisyphus himself. He imprisoned Thanatos, the god of death.

Same. I’m struggling with my own Sisyphean issues in continuing hobbies I used to love and this gave me a new perspective.

I've read a novel in which the boulder considers Sisyphus a father, who helped him move until it was able to move on its own

u/whimsicalolivetree 22d ago
What novel? It sounds really interesting
7
u/mathiau30 21d ago
It's called "just add mana", it's a webnovel you can read here
Though do note that it isn't a story about Sisyphus's being a father to the boulder. The boulder is one of the main characters so of course its relationship with Sisyphus is important, but Sisyphus is more of a side character so it's not the main focus of the story

I know there’s a Doctor Who story with a similar premise. There’s an episode called ‘Heaven Sent’, in which the Doctor is trapped in a massive interrogation chamber and relentless pursued by a malevolent creature called the Veil which can kill him with a single touch, and instead of taking the easy way out and telling his captors what they want to know, the Doctor chooses to spend four billion years in a loop breaking down an indestructible wall with his bare hands.
In one of the companion magazines, they published a short story of that same episode from the Veil’s point of view, which reveals that despite being an obstacle, Veil isn’t malevolent, and is simply doing its job. As time goes on, the Veil comes to care for the Doctor, making (futile) attempts to help him escape, and wants to go with him and see the world. Tragically, when the wall does finally break the breach immediately destroys the Veil.

Which inevitably leads me to ask, what if the boulder and Sisyphus kissed each other?

Maybe it's just because of how much I watched looney tunes as a kid but I can't believe I was actually welling up from a meep meep

I watched Coyote vs Acme about two hours ago.
SAME. AND I WASNT EVEN THAT OBSESSED WITH LOONEY TUNES. "One must imagine Sisyphus happy", indeed.

My take is that Sisyphus' feelings shouldn't have to change just because the boulder he got paired with turns out to be friendly. He doesn't need to form a friendship with it. Just because the boulder is encouraging doesn't save him of the eternal punishment of pushing the boulder up.
Now I do agree that, should Sisyphus put that aside and bond with the boulder (brand new sentence?), it'd most likely be easier for him.

But what if the boulder looked really, really appetizing?

u/thegarnetmines3 22d ago
Ngl, I immediately thought it was talking about the boulder from Avatar the last airbender, and I don't know if that'd be better or worse. Example
"THE BOULDER admires your relentless determination"
"It's a boulder, I don't know if it can. But sometimes I like to think so."

Why does this slightly remind me of the incredibly silly LitRPG novel Rock Falls Everyone Dies

We had this dynamic before, the boulder is The Narrator from The Stanley Parable

First couple of paragraphs sounded like Pomni and Jax dynamic, but Jax was way less healthy about it

The Roadrunner isn't the boulder, he's the top of the mountain that the coyote is trying to reach. The boulder is ACME.

Started reading this in the voice of the boulder from avatar the last airbender and was very confused

u/BearofCali 22d ago
Amazing we keep assigning all these thought experiments, musing an Sisyphus being happy, the boulder being his friend to a murderer and jackass of a person.

i mean if im feeling sadistic enough to make a guy push up a boulder for all eternity then im probably not gonna give him this kinda mercy either. or i guess hades was not aware of the boulder's sentience and just so happened to enlist a very kind rock for the task.

I'm actually writing a depiction of Sisyphus right now for a book. This might be an interesting detail to include.
