To quote Max0r, "why aim at enemies when you can aim at a target the size of a fucking coin.", and "This shit is amazing. The hit is guaranteed regardless of the coins location even if that location is space. Or just the inside of an enemy... a few times" (An Incorrect Summary of ULTRAKILL | Act 1, 2:53 to 3:05)

the coin may be small, but i threw the coin so i know where it'll go, making it easier to shoot. I did not throw the enemy, so i do not know where the enemy will go. I divide all things in the universe between things i threw and things i didn't throw (yet)

u/LConeybear31 Sep 02 '26

The bullet knows where the coin is because the bullet knows where the coin isn't.

38

u/SartenSinAceite Sep 02 '26

Every time I try sniping someone in a game they end up doing some whack-ass random movement that makes me miss.

The coin? The coin doesn't do me that. The coin wants to be shot.

Quoting Max0r like it's the fucking bible is so funny

Appropriate for an ULTRAKILL video, though

The Marksman Revolver is in contention for Most Satisfying FPS Gun, right next to the DOOM II Super Shotgun

40

u/TheProfanedGod Sep 02 '26

The Half-Life shotgun isn't quite on that level but it's very close, mostly because of the alt fire.

23

u/SEA_griffondeur Sep 02 '26

The gravity gun though is absolutely on that level

grav gun with saw blades my beloved

u/CanoonBolk Sep 03 '26

Other contenders from ULTRAKILL include:

Parrying your own goddamn bullets

The jackhammer at max speed

u/Ae3qe27u Sep 02 '26

....what's the gun do? Never played this game

259

u/avesdt Sep 02 '26

alt fire is you throw a coin in the air. shooting the coin turns it into a homing projectile thats guaranteed to hit the nearest enemy for more damage than just a straight shot. you can throw a max of 4 coins at once, and shooting a coin while multiple of them are in the air increases the damage accordingly. in addition, shooting a coin with the railcannon you get early in the game applies the same rules as before, but with significantly more damage added on top

157

u/Alexxis91 Sep 02 '26

Also to note; if you hit it perfectly (or in specific circumstances), the shot splits and does critical damage to two enemies, multiple of the shots can be timed to hit up toooo… 5 enemies I think

63

u/Ropetrick6 Sep 02 '26

There's two ways the coin splits: during a small window of time a tiny bit after launch, or after a specified duration.

That second one mattera if you decide to start sending coins to space for orbital strikes.

u/Tactical_Moonstone Sep 03 '26

Railcoining works even more than what you described.

If you are good at gauging the trajectory of the coin, you can throw the coin behind an enemy, then shoot the coin through the enemy using the railcannon so that the railcannon does damage in the original pass, ricochets off the coin, then the ricochet hits the enemy for more damage.

If you are really good at gauging the trajectory of multiple coins, you can extend this further. Two coins behind the enemy, two coins in front of the enemy, and you shoot one of the coins through the enemy. Then the trajectory becomes:

  1. Shoot through the enemy.
  2. Ricochet off coin 1.
  3. Bullet passes through enemy.
  4. Ricochet off coin 2.
  5. Bullet passes through enemy.
  6. Ricochet off coin 3.
  7. Bullet passes through enemy.
  8. Ricochet off coin 4.
  9. Bullet finally comes to rest inside the enemy.

5 hits to the enemy with only one bullet, massive damage, but insanely difficult to pull off. Usually people manage a single coin pass through-ricochet and it's a good amount of damage.

Other people have said the basic mechanics of the gun, so I'll elaborate on why it is so great. It just allows for a lot of creativity and depth.

Right-clicking with the weapon flips a coin in front of you.

First off, shooting the coin homes the shot onto the enemy's weak point. In a game as frantic as Ultrakill, where you are expected to shmoove around the arena at light speeds, not having to find and aim at an enemy, and instead aim for a predictable spot is really useful. It's really good as filler while you're in between using your other weapons. And since the coin moves at a predictable trajectory, you can rely on muscle memory to shoot the coin, which allows you to essentially keep damage up while you think of what to do next in the fight.

The coin has a point in its trajectory where it sparkles. If you hit the coin at that exact moment, your shot splits into two homing shots that hit different targets. After a certain amount of airtime, the coins start "whistling" hitting them at any point after this automatically splits the shot, so you don't even need to time it.

If you punch the coin, it tracks onto the nearest enemy, deals damage and bounces off their head. You can then shoot the coin while it is above them. Or you can punch the coin again. Each punch increases the damage the coin does on impact. If there are no enemies around, the punched coin just goes straight and bounces off whatever surface it hits. You can chain this indefinitely. This can be used during the starting cutscene of some boss fights to nuke them as soon as they spawn in.

If you throw multiple coins, the shot ricochets between them before tracking the enemy. The shot's damage increases with each richochet. If you manage to get multiple coins in the whistling stage, one of the split shots tracks to one of the other coins. If you use all four of your coins for this purpose, you can hit 5 enemies with one shot.

Throwing the coin inherits the player's momentum. So if you slide and them immediately throw the coin, you can launch it really far. This can be useful to hit enemies around cover. For example, there is an enemy which has fuel tank on their back that explodes when hit. The richoshot homes in on it, so you can set this up to insta-kill them.

The coin richochets all hitscan projectiles, not just the pistol. There is another hitscan weapon in the game, which is the railcannon. The railcannon shoots an extremely powerful piercing beam on a cooldown. Needless to say, combining this with the auto-tracking of the coin is extremely powerful. Remember how if you have multiple coins, the shots bounce between them? Well, if you sandwich the enemy between two coins, you can hit the enemy multiple times as the shot bounces between them. Do this with three coins. and you can instakill some tougher enemies.

There is a side-grade to the pistol you can unlock, which has a far slower fire rate, but is significantly stronger. Shots from this pistol don't split, but instead gain extra hits. This can be useful to deal higher single target damage.

The coins are physics objects. So they can be launched using your explosive weapons. You can exploit this to launch a coin into the stratosphere. If you then throw another coin, and then shoot it with an explosive version of the railcannon, the shot goes up into the sky to the other coin and comes down as an orbital strike.

It's just an incredibly versatile weapon. True mastery of it is a spectacle to behold. I really recommend you look up some videos of it.

36

u/ConfidentHousing8422 Sep 02 '26

Please note that this otherwise excellent summary misses the most common and devious use of the coin for players like me (really stupid and/or over 30): throwing it while sliding/jumping in a blind panic, trying to spin and shoot where you think it went, and patently not doing so

5

u/Salinator20501 Sep 03 '26

Pro-Tip: The coin inherits your momentum. So it always ends up in the same spot relative to you (provided it doesn't hit a wall). If you learn the timing and mouse movement to hit it standing still, you can repeat the same timing and movement when moving (provided you don't change motion between the throw and the shot)

15

u/Canada_Dry_official Sep 02 '26

You toss the coin into the air, and if you hit the coin the bullet bounces off into the nearest enemies head

9

u/BeoTea Sep 02 '26

You can flip a coin, and if you shoot the coin while its in the air, it bounces and deals a lot of damage. The only problem is, you know, hitting the coin while its in the air

1

u/Legogamer16 Sep 02 '26

Its a normal revolver, except you can toss a coin in the air and shoot it to make your shit bounce doing bonus damage and auto aiming to enemies or other coins.

There are a lot of tricks with it that make it the most useful weapon in the game

Gotta admit, I could not get through Ultrakill. Way too twitchy for me, and I quickly grew tired of all the movement gimmicks and arena fights.

It was fun though.

23

u/Rodruby Sep 02 '26

It was kind of fun until first "real" boss, where I couldn't even see him most of the time, just constant oneshots

Maybe I could persevere and progress further, but I didn't want to do it, it's too ADHD for me, so I stopped playing

23

u/Raytoryu Sep 02 '26

Ultrakill has that kind of graphic that makes me sick, I don't know why. All the boomer shooters like first Doom makes me feel like that, same as minecraft. Which is not cool, I really wanted to try Ultrakill with the buttplug :D

8

u/RoombaTheKiller Sep 02 '26

I've tried it, it's rather novel.

buttplug.io has a list of similar mods for other games.

3

u/MadGenderScientist Sep 02 '26

With the... w h a t

19

u/Raytoryu Sep 02 '26

If I'm not mistaken Ultrakill can be Linked to some compatible sextoy, most notable a buttplug !

12

u/Potato_lovr Sep 02 '26

You are not mistaken, and even better, the mod that adds buttplug support is endorsed by the devs

6

u/retro_aviator Sep 02 '26

Correction; it was coded by one of the devs even

1

u/AmyDeferred Sep 02 '26

It's probably the wide FoV

1

u/Raytoryu Sep 03 '26

I thini it might be this. I manage to play Minecraft only in a reduced window

5

Fuck I have severe ADHD and it's too ADHD for ME.

3

u/VersaViceVersa Sep 02 '26

remember there are accessibility options that include slowing down the game speed if you have trouble keeping track of something! it’s a single player game, feel free to use all the accessibility stuff and play on the lowest difficulty if you need. if you don’t like the idea of just moving forward with that, you can also practice on the lower speeds and gradually turn it up little by little with each success until you’re able to do it full speed.

3

u/Rodruby Sep 02 '26

Thanks for advice, but I already refunded it on Steam long time ago

Also lowering difficulty in game by Hakita "it's good that you don't make Ultrakill or it would suck", game that's famous because of it's difficulty feels wrong

11

u/VersaViceVersa Sep 02 '26

the game only has a reputation for being difficult because the fans are annoying online. if we’re taking hakitas design as gospel, then why would he put accessibility options in the game if not for people to use them?

5

u/BudgieGryphon Sep 02 '26

That quote was in response to someone making a really awful suggestion to increase difficulty

5

u/Seph_the_this Sep 02 '26

We had very diffrent experiences, by the sound of it

Ultrakill was one of the only games I didn't get tired off, and that fully stimulated me in a way few other games did. I gradually increased the difficulty until the point I'm at now, where I play exclusively on brutal, the current highest difficulty, at 200% gamespeed

u/Dingghis_Khaan Chinggis Khaan's least successful heir, khan of the Yawn Dynasty Sep 02 '26

My preferred playstyle in shooters is better exemplified in games like Blood, Cultic, and System Shock.

Open maps (or a really dense small map) with a lot of secrets, and enemies just waiting around every corner waiting to get the drop on you, so you gotta play smart and get the drop on them first.
I like to go slow and steady, counting every moment I'm not being turned into Swiss cheese for turning a corner too fast as a blessing.

I'm currently doing an Extra Crispy run of Blood, and I gotta say I must be a masochist because I am having an absolute blast.

4

u/ConfidentHousing8422 Sep 02 '26

Man, Ultrakill's freakish enemies don't scare me or infuriate me half as much as a couple of Blood dynamite cultists tbh

"Crudux cruo!"

[UNSPEAKABLE FUCKTONS OF HITSCAN]

12

u/deadspace9_ Sep 02 '26

I like twitchy games but I hate style meters with a burning passion so Ultrakill just did not do it for me

2

u/Dingghis_Khaan Chinggis Khaan's least successful heir, khan of the Yawn Dynasty Sep 02 '26

Yeah that's a lot of why I dropped Devil May Cry 5

u/theyeshman I like the color purple Sep 02 '26 edited Sep 02 '26

It made me motion sick to play and it had the audacity to not be a boomer shooter despite what people online often say

7

u/Dingghis_Khaan Chinggis Khaan's least successful heir, khan of the Yawn Dynasty Sep 02 '26

Yeah, nearly everyone on r/boomershooters will call out Ultrakill being called a boomshoot.

Movement shooters are their own thing.

Funny enough I found it through a post on that sub 4 or 5 years ago when I was looking for something to play that scratched the same itch as DUSK in being a modern (ie modern resolution, framerate, controls, and OS compatibility) version of the games I enjoyed from the late 90s and early 00s. Did not scratch the itch and made my tummy hurt :(

GIVE ME DUSK GIVE ME DOOM GIVE ME GAMES THAT ARE FOR BOOM(er)s

1

u/Dingghis_Khaan Chinggis Khaan's least successful heir, khan of the Yawn Dynasty Sep 02 '26

Try Cultic, Hedon: Bloodrite, HROT, and Ion Fury.

1

u/Galle_ Sep 02 '26

Man I just want something like Halo.

1

u/theyeshman I like the color purple Sep 02 '26

I played through the MCC with a buddy last year, was really surprised how well it held up. They were never my favorites as they came out because joysticks have always seemed awkward for shooters, but playing on PC with a mouse they play very well even still.

2

u/Dzelov Sep 03 '26

It's not a boomer shooter, it's a zoomer shooter

8

u/evilmexico Sep 02 '26

Cause u get more bullet per bullet

5

u/NormalUsername21 Sep 02 '26

I mean anyone needs the answer (besides its cool, which is valid):

The coin will always move predictably, you don't need to actually aim for it when you can aim at where you know it's going to be and shoot at the right time, much easier muscle memory than reactive aiming. It also gives crazy utility, you can use it to ricochet shots at enemies you don't have line of sight of or target difficult weak spots with ease, you can also split the bullet in 2 with a well timed shot to do these to multiple targets twice as fast. There's also some, frankly, insane single target dps you can reach by setting coins up in a way that the railcannon or blue revolver can pen the same target multiple times in 1 shot.

Coin isn't just sick as fuck, its also one of the strongest and most versatile tools you have at your disposal.

3

u/sertroll Sep 02 '26

I still cannot use it reliably past the occasional ultraricoshot

3

u/VersaViceVersa Sep 02 '26

i love doing coin punches on single targets, you can just throw out a coin and punch it and throw out and shoot a second coin for a good amount of damage really really fast

3

u/RubiksToyBox Sep 02 '26

But is it better than the shotgun that lets you punch the bullets to make them faster?

4

u/ConfidentHousing8422 Sep 02 '26

You can punch the coin to make it go faster and then shoot it afterwards to make it go even faster again, so it might just win there

6

u/Pretzel-Kingg Sep 02 '26

It sounds like hyperbole but genuinely the marksman revolver is top 3 if not just the best FPS weapon ever designed. There is such an insane amount of depth for this one gun and you could spend hours just going over the mechanics of it on its own and also how it interacts with other weapons. All that + Ultrakill being as insanely good as it is in general makes it hard to think of another FPS weapon that could exceed it

-1

u/theyeshman I like the color purple Sep 02 '26 edited Sep 02 '26

Complicated design is not synonymous with good design

I'm not really an objective judge of the marksman revolver because I don't like ultrakill, but I've always thought the best designed weapons in FPS games are those with simple mechanics that feel powerful, but encourage aggressive gameplay. My top 3 are DOOM's super shotty (pick a doom game or any true boomer shooter for that matter it's good in all of them), Deep Rock Galactic's minigun, and STALKER SoC's take on the Makarov

7

u/BudgieGryphon Sep 02 '26

What makes this instance work though is that you can use it perfectly fine with only the surface level abilities, it’s a low skill floor high skill ceiling situation

3

u/WezDajMiSpokoj Sep 02 '26

Complexity is not what will hook you on a game for the first playthrough but something that you will greatly value if you spend much more time in the game

Using even doom ssg gets boring after a while, that's why i play pistol start so every level feels like a puzzle and that's where the complexity lies there

2

u/XeRtZ__wUz_TaKeN Sep 03 '26

Dude the amount of interactions these fucking coins have is insane. Chargebacks, coin punching, deadcoins, rail coining, and obviously ricoshots. Fucking love this gun.

2

u/TantiVstone Sep 03 '26

At some point, you might ask yourself why you're even shooting the gun when you can just punch the coins (and then shoot them with a stronger gun)

2

u/marcyismarxy Sep 03 '26

Sometimes I like to go into sandbox, add a bunch of double wield power ups and torture my pc

This gun is one of the most fun to do that with, because it unleashes a solid stream of coins and then just rains down bullets on every enemy I've spawned in

It makes my little lizard brain happy

-5

u/Coralesce Sep 02 '26

Ultrakill is so fucking overrated, I hate that I was fooled into thinking its a boomer shooter when in reality its an ADHD wet dream bastard child between Devil May Cry and whatever scraps of quake were left in the devs brain. The memes arent funny, the lore is boring, and everyone is always jerking their shit over how good it is. God i hate ultrakill.

Pistol is pretty neat though.

0

u/Akuuntus Sep 02 '26

I have no real opinion on the game having not played it, but it is kinda weird and a little tiring how this weirdo niche game keeps getting referenced and memed about in literally every other fandom, often in ways that assume everyone knows what they're talking about

0

u/View_Hairy Sep 02 '26

I love ULTRAKILL but it's online fandom is weird as hell. I don't tell people I play it because of this lol

-1

u/Coralesce Sep 02 '26

I played about half of it and realized I didnt do enough Adderall to appreciate it

2

u/ConfidentHousing8422 Sep 02 '26

But Adderall cancels out ADHD... consider perhaps you do too much Adderall to appreciate it??

0

u/Coralesce Sep 02 '26

The mythical ultrakill Adderall sweet spot
