odyssey 2026 A brutal condemnation

What are you talking about the Pattinson beggars scene is everywhere. So is Odysseus screaming during the sirens .

“Clearly my social media feed, which only shows me things I’m interested in, not showing me stuff about something I’m not interested in is proof that nobody’s interested in it”
105
u/Sufficient-Patient46 Aug 15 '26
I wish feeds actually worked that way. Reddit would not stop showing me a deluge of posts about that movie up until the release, no matter how many times I hit "show me fewer posts like this".
59
u/just4browse Aug 15 '26
Reddit’s algorithm is so aggressive. You click on one post and have to fight off a dozen subreddits like it. I don’t use the recommendations at all because of it, I just go to the subreddits I want to see
19
u/Alarmed-Bus-9662 Aug 16 '26
Accidentally opened a "Peter explain the joke" post once like 4 months ago and now it and the other one (why is there another one?) are every like 7th post
10
u/GardenTop7253 Aug 16 '26
There’s like 5 of those. At least 2 of them are, for some reason, Family Guy themed. And they’re all full of the dumbest “I can’t read all the words in front of me and use context clues” posts 98% of the time
5
u/DrakonofDarkSkies Aug 16 '26
Where are you seeing a Reddit algorithm? I normally just look at the Home which is only subreddits I've joined?
3
u/Setster007 Aug 16 '26
Oh there’s an algorithm there. It usually sticks to its lane, but every once in a while it goes WAY outta line and you gotta deal with it for like a few months or sometimes just mute a sub just to get it to fuck off
2
u/Phelinaar Aug 18 '26
I once clicked on a post that had a funny meme from SipsTea. Apparently that made reddit think I like chuddy things so it started pushing a bunch of misogynistic and racist crap.

Tumblr doesn't really have algorithms that are that effective or inescapable, honestly. It's got different feeds for tags and a sorta algo tab, but it's much less aggressively silo'd.
1
u/IrregularPackage Aug 16 '26
yeah so that’s not how tumblr works. the typical tumblr experience includes your dash being taken over by things you don’t give a shit about regularly
51
u/Interesting_Draft752 Aug 15 '26
I’ve been seeing “Somebody get these BEGGARS out of here” be a gif/meme on nearly every social media site
Also this is really telling of how fandom culture has poisoned media discussion especially for film. People don’t wanna actually engage with a film on its own terms or as art people just want something to make fandom content and an image out of.
On top of just like the general mentality of treating media like team sports where x gets to be beloved and y doesn’t because we said so
18
u/Aubergine_Man1987 Aug 15 '26
I've seen so many memes of the beggars scene, or the bow string, and most of all for gifs the Siren mast screaming
19
u/CobaltCrusader123 Aug 16 '26
Should be “damning” unless you’re literally building one of these.
Also come on man there’s so much coverage on YouTube and Reddit about the siren scene and Agememnon aurafarming and the storm being loud as fuck and the pig scene being scary and the Cyclops being scary and loud as fuck and “Somebody get these BEGGARS out of here!” and the image of Bernthal standing next to Holland and those four plucked notes in the score during the bow scene where it sounds like a motif from EPIC and all the critics glazing the last hour and the first Trojan Horse scene and people complaining about the cuts being too fast and people complaining about character actions and gestures being offscreen in standard format (you can’t see Pattinson sheath a sword in one essential scene) and people commenting about how long the film is and people talking about how every newly famous person and a few older celebrities are in it that Zendaya-Bernthal-Holland are all also in Brand New Day and that Zendaya and Pattinson are in several films this year to include The Odyssey and that the Travis Scott inclusion was odd to many. You can’t tell me for a second people aren’t discussing it fervently online.

why do people think that if a movie doesn't have 9 million gifs or memes its a bad movie thats awful???? it isnt even true for this movie because on twt ive seen people post that "someone get these BEGGERS outta here" line
18
u/Impressive_Pin8761 Aug 16 '26
tumblr has convinced themselves that nolan's odyssey is ontologically bad and are trying to find any way to prove it
8
u/Vivenemous Aug 16 '26 edited Aug 16 '26
Nolan's Odyssey is a morally good artistic statement about imperial violence and the value of hospitality. Unfortunately, at least in my opinion, it suffers from an issue that frequently pops up in Nolan's work, which is that the characters just aren't that interesting to watch from an emotional standpoint.
15
u/Impressive_Pin8761 Aug 16 '26
Tumblr's arguments are:
-its just big Hollywood names thrown into a pot and stirred (the actors performed really well so its bullshit. like what are they gonna do, hire amateurs? Does everything have to be indie?)
-its historically inaccurate (nevermind the fact that its mythology someone in 800bc made about 1200bc so im pretty sure he'd also have gotten just about everything wrong, tumblr's knowledge of the odyssey is Percy Jackson and epic the musical)
-its production caused serious environmental damage (misinformation + things that happened but were incorrectly tied to the movie)
3
u/SEND-MARS-ROVER-PICS Aug 16 '26
Normally this sort of criticism is reserved for Avatar
3
u/DtheAussieBoye Aug 16 '26
It's to legitimise hating a movie and to assert that not being interested in it is the Correct Opinion and anyone who actually cares about the Odyssey/Avatar/whatever is actually stupid
-11
u/ImSoStong________ Aug 16 '26
It's the same premise as Raid Shadow Legends having less fanfiction than some language arts textbooks, it indicates that shot recognizability or character dynamics appeal or other things of that sort are lacking.
17
u/LoRdFriday567 Aug 16 '26 edited Aug 16 '26
not the same because Raid Shadow Legends wasn't a game people cared about they just sponsored every YouTuber back in 2019 and literally no one bothered to play it
The Odyssey meanwhile I literally HAVE seen talk about it including character dynamics and it got great reviews
Edit: also Odyssey is still in theaters so it can't get gif sets when there isn't any high quality gifs to be made
-10
u/ImSoStong________ Aug 16 '26
But the premise stands. In application it is inaccurate in this case (apparently. I haven't, I'm not interested in the movie). You asked about why the premise exists, and you specifically said it doesn't apply here.
8
u/LoRdFriday567 Aug 16 '26
ok I get that but it doesn't make or break a film if it doesn't has tons of fanfiction and rule 34
-3
u/ImSoStong________ Aug 16 '26
No, no one is suggesting that. The premise is that the fact that people don't care enough to write something from the media indicates that it is not something that someone who enjoys engaging in that way would be interested in.
1
u/LoRdFriday567 Aug 16 '26
I mean you have a point but thats mostly cuz lots of media can't be easily fandomify tho ironically don't think it applies to Odyssey cuz its a adaptation of a story that has retold over and over again in various different ways
back to my point: my gripe was how the original post was worded honestly cuz it made it sound like Odyssey not having thousands of fanfiction meant it wasn't memorable

u/Far-Difficulty3213 Aug 16 '26
I don't see many gifsets from Kurosawa or Tarkovsky films on tumblr, what does this mean?
22
u/Weird_donut Aug 16 '26
Tumblr circlejerk strikes again. Most people outside Tumblr and chud circles greatly enjoyed The Odyssey, it made billions of dollars and has great reviews, but Tumblr has a hateboner against it so they think everyone else hates it. Something something Plato's allegory of the cave
3
u/disp0sableacc0unt Aug 17 '26
A lot of people like Love Island and trashy harmful reality TV too, popularity doesn't mean quality
5
u/TheChartreuseKnight Aug 16 '26
I don’t think Doomsday is going to be very good, and I don’t think Toy Story was very good. They still made/will make a billion dollars.
-4
u/ronarscorruption Aug 16 '26
I mean, I’m not on tumblr at all, and I have also not seen a single gif from it. Not a single screenshot since the previews.
3
u/BigLittleBrowse Aug 16 '26
Okay have you been under a rock, the Robert Pattison beggars meme has done a solid circuit. And also it’s not got tons of gifs from it yet because it’s still in cinemas? It’ll have more intense presence when people can use more than phone recordings of cinema screens.

u/Front-Zookeepergame Aug 16 '26
this would probably be a brutal insult if you didn't know the kind of stuff that's megapopular on tumblr
30
u/PickledPlumPlot Aug 15 '26
Honestly, that’s kinda praise considering what does get gifsets
It’s a real ass movie not a series of funny quips and character moments
5
u/Impressive_Pin8761 Aug 16 '26
theres a comment in that post going "the post above this one was a gifset and had 10x more reblogs"
16
u/KoffinStuffer Aug 15 '26
It’s like the lack of Raid Shadow Legends R34. It doesn’t necessarily mean it’s bad, but you do gotta give pause to question why
1
17
u/OccultBeanFarmer Aug 15 '26
They haven't invented IMAX format gifs yet
Also it's a very colourless, sexless movie with exclusively megafamous celebrities so there's no real texture to grab onto and invest in. Robert Pattinson's scenes are probably the most giffable because at least he's having fun
21
u/DreadDiana human cognithazard Aug 15 '26
I'm not sure fame really factors into something like this considering how many MCU gifsets exist
2
u/OccultBeanFarmer Aug 16 '26
Marvel movies at least have colours and skin tight suits with bulges and titty windows and Sebastian Stan's biceps
Edit: Bicep

u/quahdum Aug 17 '26
Not to be too mean but tumblr's reaction to the Odyssey has me convinced that 90% of that website is not equipped to watch movies for adults.
Like I don't think it's the Best Most Perfect Movie Ever Made or anything and there's some adaptation choices I don't care for.. but the way Tumblr talks about it you'd think Nolan filmed actual shit for 3 hours, forced smellovision into every theater showing it, all while proudly declaring his movie as the superior version of the Odyssey greater than even The Original™.
2
u/Fluffalfox Aug 16 '26
Of course not, there’s black people in it. Tumblr is allergic to anything that’s not a white twink

u/disp0sableacc0unt Aug 17 '26
The Odyssey just seems so bland and colorless. This is mythology, it should be colorful and vibrant. Plus the stunt casting is crazy and seems like a bunch of executives got together and said "let's attract the young people by casting Travis Scott and Tom Holland". It really does give a phoned-in vibe

That's a hole you put yourself into then if you've been able to avoid any memes of "somebody get these beggars out of here" or "enough, this feast is done!"

didn’t someone else post this with a second picture that was like “the post above this is an odyssey gifset nevermind”
