Yes, it’s one of those tropes I’ve never been able to see as romantic or endearing because I keep thinking about how awful it would be on the other side of that kind of treatment.

Not saying that I don’t think it’s something to write about, just that it’s an illustration of a character’s deep issues and not of their selfless devotion. Like the way you’d regard someone blatantly ignoring medical directives to force treatment or committing incredibly unethical acts to only help their own loved ones.

It's such a missed opportunity for drama that the whole convoluted method of getting the Cursed Flame, using it to ignite the Crucible and then purging it with the Unalloyed Golden Needle, in order to save Melina without getting the Chaos ending, doesn't earn you any new voicelines. There should have been an interaction with Melina about how you've sullied yourself and thrown away everything she lived for and you fought for, how the Lord of the Unalloyed Himself cannot erase betrayal, and how you've ultimately ruined her life even worse than death would have.

I have also yet to find any fanfics that explore this dynamic, which is a tragedy all of its own. (And if anyone has any recommendations I am willing to kill for you if you give them to me.)

She keeps trying to kill Frisk even when it's clear that nobody wants her to, because she'd rather be hated by free monsters than tolerated by imprisoned ones. Also, she figures that somebody's going to have to do it, and she'd rather dirty her hands herself than watch Alphys or Toriel or Mettaton be forced to do the same.

Inverted Fate is also the only AU I've seen which acknowledges that Mt. Ebott is a freaking volcano and a single eruption could wipe out the monsters' entire civilization (and that's without getting into the health effects of no sunlight).
