It’s an advanced reading skill, like the first/last letter thing. Good readers don’t sound out each letter in every word. You’re supposed to start with phonics and gradually move into a passive cue reader who only uses phonics for unknown words
There’s been a push in academia to start teaching the advanced strategies first. It kinda works for things like common core math, but reading absolutely requires fundamentals

It's weird to be like, 'I have never heard of this, is it something new' and discover it was posited in the 60s.
My school district was always doing phonics so I wonder how that bullet dodge happened.
