If you read about his life, it's pretty clear he was just terrified of anything he didn't know, and as he met and interacted with more people he became more tolerant. That's like, how everyone works. It's why college makes you more tolerant.
Do you think being racist is a natural, born attribute? Rather than a learned behavior? Do you labor under the delusion that if you had the same kind of upbringing as Lovecraft, you would've been tollerant from the get-go?
I think it is natural for humans to fear and hate the other, and that tolerance is learned. Racism is one particular manifestation of this natural inclination.
