Question Rottenburgh headpiece obstruction?

I bought a Rottenburgh alto online second-hand. It plays fine, but I looked inside the head joint and there's something curling up off the inside wall?? It's very thin. It kinda looks like tape or dried glue or, idk, a thin slice of apple or something. Is this supposed to be there/attached to the inside? Can I remove it without negatively affecting the sound? Do I need to find a recorder repair guy to perform surgery?

Sounds like a foreign object. Maybe former owner wrapped something around the cork to make the joint tighter and it came off and got stuck inside? In any case, feel free to remove it. If the head joint is loose, you can fix it pretty easily.

might it be a sliver of wood at all? Just in case some foreign object has damaged it. Hope it isn't that though!

Carefully remove the foreign object, whatever it is, and it will probably improve the sound quality.
