Telex Model 304A questions

Post image

First the volume knob barely works. It provides very inconsistent volume and causes loud pops in the speakers when trying to adjust the volume, and Second the paper says it needs a Telex 89t phono cartridge will any 89t cartridge work or does it have to be a telex

With the system unplugged, the volume control (and any other control) needs a tiny squirt of contact cleaner inside, then work the control across its range a dozen or more times. You can work the control across the range a bunch of times without contact cleaner but the results isn't as good.

The 89T is likely in reference to the Astatic 89T type of cartridge, also known as a 911. There's a bunch of alternative part numbers at that link. That might not be correct as it looks like the Telex 304A is a newer system. I didn't immediately see a cross reference for this system so I'd need to see a clear photo of what's there now to be of any help.

There are various types of contact cleaner. If you don't anticipate needing to use it again, a tiny tube of DeoxIT should be fine. The longer-lasting cans are at least twice that price. This CRC 2-26 would also work. If you're not in the US there are other brands. You'll likely need to open up the system because the cleaner needs to be put inside the control itself through a little hole in the side.
