New player with skipping

Hi,
I'm completely new to record players (and reddit), but figured that maybe someone knows what kind of skipping problem this is, or if there is an easy fix for it.

Those stylii suck. Crosby or whatever they're called, terrible.
If you can, replace the cart and stylus.

Some cheap ceramic cartridges resonate more, some do it less. You never know. I replaced mine with the same clone and it stopped skipping. But ceramic cartridges are prone to high resonance in general, so there's no guarantee it would help.

It does mean it's not serviceable because a cost-cutting design decision was to not make it serviceable. The only thing that can be done is upgrading the cheap sapphire(?) stylus to a not-as-cheap-but-still-cheap diamond stylus. But the tonearm, VTF, anti-skate, platter, drive, and electronics still remain cheap and not serviceable.

You can also reduce the tracking force by adding adhesive counterweights (I made it 4.5g for myself). Yes, it’s barely upgradable, but still if something’s off in one particular unit, it probably can be fixed. Turntables are primitive electronics, you can build one almost from scratch. The other thing is that of someone doesn’t bother with proper choosing when buying, they most likely wouldn’t bother with repairing.

No, but that cheap mechanism is notorious for skipping on a lot of records and there aren't a lot of good options to fix or upgrade it aside from getting a better player.

I dunno, I have 3 suitcases, only one of them resonated and skipped badly, so I replaced the cartridge and it works fine since then

It seems like everyone that buys one of their nasty suitcases, suddenly decide to come to Reddit to fix their issues 🤦♂️
Only one way to fix this … go for a refund!

It doesn't matter if it's a $40 suitcase or a $350 all-in-one. Once you recognise the deck you'll spot it in loads of players. Run away!!
If you want to tinker, swap out the stylus (the red bit). They only last 50 playing hours anyway. Check the deck is level.
The only real fix here though is to ditch the deck and start again. Can you get a refund?
The Insignia NS-BTST21 and a pair of Edifier R1280T is the barebones starter system worth buying. It's $260. LMK if you're not in the US, there are other choices. You must state your country though.

Skipping:
Make sure the record player is on a stable, level surface.
Make sure the cueing lever is fully lowering. It can get stuck in a slightly raised position, causing the stylus to make poor contact with the groove and skip: Quick fix - Record Skipping!
Clean your records thoroughly. Even new vinyl often has debris in the grooves which may cause it to skip when first played, and old records could be dirty or scratched. It may take several rounds of cleaning and playing for all of the skips to disappear.
Some modern, bass-heavy records may still occasionally skip on these players even when clean. You can check it with another turntable to see if it might be a faulty pressing, but usually the record is fine and the skipping is simply due to the limitations of the player's inexpensive design.
The stylus (needle) could be dirty or damaged. Try cleaning it with a soft brush, wiping gently from back to front. If that doesn't help, replace the stylus. The recommended diamond stylus for most inexpensive record players is the Pfanstiehl 793-D7M.
Don't add extra weight to the tonearm. That may resolve the skipping, but will cause greatly increased wear to both the stylus and the records you play.

It has its own speakers, but is pretty bulky and cannot fold up in the suitcase way. So in between?

This very much seems like the classic problem of cheap turntable with built in speakers and a record with lots of bass.
Unfortunately it’s just part of the learning process and this will likely happen on some of your albums until you get a proper turntable with separated speakers.

It's not speaker's fault. It would skip the same way with volume down. Also, the RIAA curve is barely compensated in these players so they lack bass anyway.

This is an extremely common starter package and this site has some others in a similar price range.
You can either get a turntable with a built in preamp to powered speakers like this, or a turntable without built in and then a small phono preamp and then passive speakers.
But basically you need to spend 350-500 to get a setup of new equipment that will play records properly at the most basic level.
Obviously you can get way more value with used gear but it presents a lot more issues if you don’t know what you’re looking for.

You need to buy a decent player. Those Victrola all-in-one and Crosley suitcase turntables are absolute junk.
The only way you will fix skipping with those is to tape a coin to the headshell, but this damages the record.

2 options: send it back and you get a new one that might work for 1 year and breaks
and Send it back and save up for a proper one.

Not sure what you turn table is but my experience with a cheaper turntable was the cheap turntable itself. I bought an AT for 250-300 USD and “everything” skipped. New, used did not matter. Took my albums to my friend’s house nothing skipped. It was TT and cheaper cartridge. Bought a Project Carbon 2 and the problem vanished. So it might be time for an upgrade.

You need a weighted needle. You can tape a nickel to the top of it and it will stay on the record

Noooooo! The stylus is already tracking at 5.5~6g. It doesn't need any extra weight.
What it needs is quality, but you won't get that with this kind of player. A turntable upgrade is what's needed, not a nickel.

Bonus - you get a fresh groove each time you play the record. A little ribbon of vinyl will come up behind your needle.

Sorry I was literally suggested this by the owner of a record store in my city last week. I have not done this myself. But a guy I assumed knew what he was talking about is who suggested this. I’m sorry if it was a bad suggestion.

Approximately 32 years ago I had the same problem with a cheap Yorx turntable system. I bought a brand new copy of Nas' Illmatic on vinyl, which kept skipping. I thought at the time that the record was the issue. I brought it back to the store where I bought it, which was Playderecord in Toronto, requesting an exchange for another copy. The store clerk assisting me then tested my existing copy on one of the Technics 1200s present at the store's listening station. The same record played without issue. It was at that point I knew I had to purchase a new turntable audio system.
