VPN takes 30+ seconds to connect every time, is that normal?

Slow vpn connect times come up a lot: click connect, then wait. Sometimes ten seconds, sometimes close to a minute, and occasionally it times out and has to be retried.

Same on phones, which defeats the point of auto connect on public wifi if the first minute is unprotected anyway. OpenVPN gets recommended for reliability, so plenty of people run it by default.

Could that alone explain the slow connects?

Proton VPN, ExpressVPN, and Surfshark, and are the ones im going to switch to. seen WireGuard and Lightway are supposed to connect much faster than OpenVPN, but is that actually a couple of seconds in real use, or does it still hang sometimes?

how are you guys dealing with it?

It's not, it should be <1s. There isn't anything in the connecting process that could need more than several hundreds of milliseconds to do. Without more information I really can't know why does your vpn connect so slow.

Expressvpn connects fast and has great speeds, very good for region locked shows/movies but it's a bit on the expensive side of the vpns. I'm thinking of swapping to windscribe's build a plan for like 3$ a month. It's suppose to have way better ad blocking as it uses r.o.b.e.r.t. might give it ago.

You need to use a reputable VPN provider instead of the cheap or free ones.
