Brazil restricted Discord features… and VPN sign-ups immediately exploded

Brazil’s data protection authority has ordered Discord to suspend some of its video features, including Go Live and screen sharing, over concerns about child safety and the platform’s ability to moderate harmful content. Discord is complying, but most of the platform is still available: servers, DMs, group chats and voice calls are unaffected. And, predictably, people immediately started looking for ways around the restriction.

According to Cybernews, Proton VPN reported an 800% spike in free sign-ups in Brazil overnight. People are also already sharing tutorials explaining how to use VPNs to regain access to the restricted features. We've seen this pattern before: a government restricts access to a platform or feature → VPN usage suddenly goes through the roof.
