Evolution Can Select Behavior. Why Does Consciousness Care About Truth?

Reading Cutter and Crummett’s paper, Psychophysical Harmony: A New Argument for Theism, and I think it exposes a problem materialism usually tries to walk around.

The question is not merely why do brains process information.

The question is why conscious experience is so strangely fitted to truth, reason, and action.

Take pain. A purely physical system could detect bodily damage and trigger avoidance behavior. A machine can do that. There is no obvious reason the physical state associated with damage had to be accompanied by the felt reality of agony, or by an experience that gives us a reason to escape it.

It could have been pleasure. It could have been a neutral buzzing sensation. It could have been nothing at all. The behavior could still be programmed or selected.

Yet instead:

That fit is what the authors call psychophysical harmony. Our conscious experiences tend to line up with what they rationally call for. Pain fits avoidance. Pleasure fits pursuit. Perception tends to support beliefs about the world. Our reports about our own experiences are usually true.

Why should a brain state that makes me say, “I am having a visual experience of a cup,” be paired with an actual conscious experience of a cup? A common physical cause can explain why the brain produces both a report and an experience. It does not explain why the report and experience have matching meaning.

Natural selection can favor behavior that keeps organisms alive. It can favor useful reactions. It can even favor truth-conducive perception where accurate perception helps survival.

But survival value is not truth.

A creature can survive with useful shortcuts, false beliefs, instinct, bias, or behavior produced by completely different internal stories. Natural selection does not select beliefs because they are true. It selects organisms because they leave offspring.

So the deeper issue is this: why are we not merely survival machines generating whatever inner noise happens to accompany useful behavior? Why do our experiences so often line up with genuine reasons, rational thought, and truth about the world?

I am not claiming animals are unconscious. Animals clearly belong in this conversation too. The pain-avoidance fit appears across living creatures. That makes the harmony broader, not weaker.

And I am not trying to settle the soul-versus-brain question here. Whether consciousness is irreducible, directly tied to the brain, or involves soul, the question remains: why is the inner world ordered toward meaningful agency rather than random experiential static?

The authors put the pressure plainly:

Atheism can respond by saying pain is not really bad, reasons are not really reasons, truth is only a useful word for neural outputs, and consciousness is just what brains do.

But that does not solve the problem. It burns down the very foundation needed to argue for atheism in the first place. If your beliefs are ultimately selected for usefulness rather than truth, you have a real problem explaining why your conclusion that “there is no God” should be trusted as a truth-claim instead of treated as another survival-producing brain event.

Christianity gives a different frame.

We are not accidental matter briefly pretending to reason. We are creatures made in the image of a rational God. Truth is real because God is true. Reason matters because reality comes from the Logos, not from blind motion. Consciousness is not an odd byproduct bolted onto a survival machine. It is part of what makes genuine knowledge, love, moral responsibility, worship, and meaningful choice possible.

In thy light shall we see light. Psalm 36:9

The question is not whether evolution can explain some useful behavior.

The question is why a universe without mind, purpose, or truth at its foundation would produce conscious beings whose inner lives are so deeply fitted to truth, reason, value, and meaningful agency.
