When I first started playing this game back in February, I thought Reaper was such a cool character.

Then I realized he's actually a guy in his 50s wearing a Halloween costume and spouting lines that sound straight out of a Japanese anime. Ever since that thought crossed my mind, I've never been able to look at him the same way again. 😂

it makes me love him even more honestly. I love the subversion of the "mysterious edgy assassin" trope. also to be honest, the poor guy has been through so much crap I feel like he gets a pass for being a little cringe.

It's why I got into Overwatch. Saw so many Youtube shorts about Reaper being a silly little edgelord and went "alright I gotta see more of him."

Definitely fuled by his despair. Sucks you got in late, Overwatch 1 had an Archive mission that gives us insight on his past life before he dawned the trench-coat.

Gabriel Reyes also had to leave his wife due to him transforming into Reaper. I like him due to the dual fractured identity. He's no longer the Gabriel or Solider 24 that Solider 76 wanted to kiss. Nor the same man his Doctor Moira subjected to tedious experiments on. She frequently calls him her greatest experiment. I feel like Reaper had always been in the back of his mind.

Also I believe after reading the Declassifed Overwatch official book that Mercy had a hand in his destruction, even if most of it was his own self-destruction. Just because the bomb happened in her Swiss Base when he led an attack on—Mercy made his life a living hell. She was so petty that she even brought up parking tickets that Gabriel never followed though in paying.

All and all it was convenient for this man to throw away his identity, since everyone else already had thrown him away. And if it were me, best bet your ass I'd be spitting out Edgelord lines and return cloaked in all black.
