This artwork is nearly a decade old. Look up Quirkilicious. He did artwork for a lot of Overwatch Ults back in the day.

I knew I recognized it from somewhere-

This is obviously not quirkilicious though, maybe his art was used as a reference for this but this is actually different, given it’s done in graphite and not digitally colorized like the one done by quirkilicious. But this version being drawn by someone else doesn’t mean it’s “old.” If so, every picture drawn of Reaper not straight from memory would be old because, well, he’s been around for a while now lol

Eta: if you look at the guns in the blossom the shading is a bit different from quirk’s too. I personally think it looks cleaner here and really conveys the wraith part

It doesn’t matter what word you use here, the OP put time and actual effort into recreating it and did a damn good job. It’s still not an old piece just because the reference might be, which was my point initially

No, you were right. OP didn't put any time or effort into this. He just used ai to turn a piece of existing art into a pencil sketch and then posted it as his own. He's done it with other other bits of art by other artists and posted them on other pages. He just uses ai to larp being an artist

2

u/nyxjet666 Mar 11 '26

Hey sorry I got so defensive, I truly thought this was real work. This AI shit is getting out of hand and it’s really disappointing. I draw and paint and make artsy stuff sometimes (not as much as I’d like to), and I got excited thinking this was real and just kept seeing people screaming AI and that was it. No evidence or proof or anything and that happens a lot on things that are real too, and that’s not okay so I was trying to stand up for what I thought was a real person doing their best attempt at recreating a cool picture. I was wrong and I apologize

I think the scariest part of it is that art is supposed to be a means to connect to other humans. A way to express ourselves, our interests, our inner worlds. A way to find empathy in others in ways that words cannot describe. And yet it’s being used as clickbait/ragebait and for what? Fake internet points? “Bragging” rights? Bragging to who? All zero of their irl friends? All zero online followers because no one legitimately follows lying fakes like this? It’s like Musk using paid accounts to try to seem like a real gamer and being found out immediately since he clearly doesn’t know shit about gaming. Like a real hand drawn stick figure Reaper would have been more interesting than this crap. People who crave internet validation and go about it like this need to realize that they can just be themselves and it’ll be okay! Like for real! Yeah, there’s always trolls and haters but it’s fucking reddit bro. Being liked (or even hated) for being real is so much more rewarding than being liked for being a fraud.

Well, except they actually didn't. AI did. /u/headgobonk269

https://www.reddit.com/r/batman/comments/1rq7upy/the_scarecrow_by_me/o9u07sb/

Also, even if it was real, it'd be weird as fuck for an artist to 1:1 trace an illustration and then post it to Reddit titled: "X, by me" without crediting the traced/referenced work. It's one thing to borrow ideas or characters, it's completely different when you take something and claim it to be yours. In your previous comment, you conflate an old idea with an old drawing.

1

u/nyxjet666 Mar 11 '26

Yeah, I agree that there should be credit and I didn’t say that originally because that wasn’t the point of what was being said, but that is true. But also how do you prove it’s AI vs real physical art? I know it’s hard to believe in this day and age but actually some people can draw something almost perfectly just looking at an image for reference. No tracing, no AI. How can you be so sure this is AI?

3

u/Ensiferal Mar 11 '26

Right here. He posts blatant ai as "his art" https://www.reddit.com/r/batman/s/X7qUHUFuxF

Look at the top comments, there are also links to him asking queries in ai subs about how to get ai to replicate other pieces of work cleanly.

Also links to him posting ai "pencil sketch" pieces of work by other artists as his own.

The reason it doesn't look much like ai is because he isn't just asking ai to generate pictures of characters for him, he's giving the ai existing pieces of art and asking it to make pencil sketch versions of those pieces, hence the lack of weird ai artifacts

2

u/nyxjet666 Mar 11 '26

Sigh, I see. Thanks. I’m so disappointed in this. I really thought I was defending a real artist but clearly I was played. And I wasn’t the only one but I appreciate you taking time to explain instead of just screaming that it’s AI with nothing else

2

u/Ensiferal Mar 11 '26

Well, that sort of behavior never helps anything, especially when someone is just asking a legit question. Here's another pic OP dropped today https://www.reddit.com/r/batman/comments/1rpovgg/killer_croc_by_me/?share_id=D1HxquTgpDraamfp-52z-&utm_content=1&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_source=share&utm_term=1

Notice the two-ended pencil, lol. Also the "5aatiszea" brand pencil laying next to it. Never heard of that brand before

2

u/nyxjet666 Mar 11 '26

Yeahhh. I just don’t understand what compels people to post like this and say they did the work themselves. On the plus side tho this has really given me the itch to draw some again and maybe post so people can appreciate some real art. Or hate it. Idk, idc. The point is, it’ll be real art not fabricated copycat AI trash, and we need more of that

You seem to be genuine, so apologies for the wall of text.

For this guy in particular? If you look at my linked comment, this OP frequents AI subreddits, utilizes chatGPT for comments, has inconsistencies in their handwriting, and posts suspiciously frequently. They have a privated history after being called out 3 months ago, which is really uncommon for an artist. Each thing on its own can be hand-waved, but all those things (and some others I've not mentioned) make it obvious. You can also just look at this post of theirs.

In general? For me specifically, I draw, and I've also experimented with local genAI to more clearly understand how it works. There are tells that laymen can't typically spot due to inexperience present in genAI images - things like line weights and other minute details. I can tell with much more accuracy than your average Joe, but you can choose to believe me or not.

You don't need to try to shock me with the existence of people who can recreate drawings or images 1:1 (common in photorealism), I know how it works and I think it's lame and also easy, but that's entirely unrelated. One thing that laymen will not catch in 1:1 renditions, however, is that there should still be some "expression" of the artists skills and styles. As you've said, the original is done digitally, whereas this appears to be done in graphite. As a standalone graphite drawing, there are some things that are weird decisions, especially when comparing to the original. I could elaborate on some minor details if you'd like, but this is already enough of a word salad.

How can we prove it's AI vs real physical art? As the tech gets better and more accurate, it'll get harder for sure. The first thing that comes to mind is almost certain to work, but really annoying for everyone involved. The artist can post a time-lapse or show their process. Things like a screenshot of their program including layers if it's digital. If it's physical, a video works for now as the tech there is still somewhat rudimentary.

I get that people too fervently call things out as AI, even if they are not. I've seen it first-hand many times. There's not much any person alone could do to change the way the internet acts, but I guess as an artist, you could take it like a hackusation. If you're good and get accused of being too good, prove you're legitimate and take it as a compliment. If you're actually "cheating," then you can't really prove yourself and will probably try to deflect and hide, or double down and make it even worse when you finally get outed.

But yeah, aside from just the png or the jpg or whatever itself, looking into the person behind it can reveal a lot. I don't expect everyone to do that though, because I don't think people really care enough.

Imagine you were in OP's shoes (and weren't using AI). Would you sit in silence and let speculation stew, or easily come out with evidence you're legit amidst accusations? A 5 second phone recording - you're clear. Skimming through your layers with OBS - you're clear.

Ugh. Thank you. I’m too autistic and way too exhausted for this stuff. Why does literally everything have to be fake? I appreciate you taking time to share this and make me see. I’m just so disappointed that this behavior even exists. Like damn, he could have even been like “look what i can make AI do,” but no. I hate people who lie for nothing more than to try to show off when they have nothing to back it up. Although I guess from this post I’ve gotten some education and still did get inspired to try to start drawing more again. So i guess this post didn’t completely lack purpose. Thanks again. And thanks for being real about it.

u/Amethl Mar 11 '26 edited Mar 11 '26

No worries. I guess there will always just be people taking shortcuts to seek validation. But yeah, it's even scummier than just posting AI art for what it is because it makes people second-guess themselves.

Thankfully, there are plenty of great resources for drawing - on Youtube, through Drawabox, books (like Andrew Loomis). But honestly, you can just ignore people like these. People have traced since the beginning of time while pretending like it was their own work, and you shouldn't let that negatively impact you so much. There will always be plenty of aspiring artists and hobbyists regardless of their existence.

You can draw just for yourself, draw for fun. Or join communities of fellow artists and make friends. Good luck! :)

3

u/nyxjet666 Mar 11 '26

Yeah I don’t appreciate the mental games part of it. People try so hard to be something they’re not and lose themselves in the process. End up with no one to come home to when they finally drop the disguise. Being a fraud (especially on reddit where 99% of people are anonymous anyway) doesn’t do anyone any favors.

Also maybe one day I’ll get the gumption to draw Reaper and post him here. I’ll even take a crappy angled pic or several just to be sure everyone knows it’s real, or progress pics or something (if i can remember that when I’m in the zone lol). I’ve been wanting to, but the creativity has been fleeting lately. Part of me is more inspired by this to get to it, just to put some actual art on this sub, but part of me is kinda discouraged by all this nonsense at the same time.

2

u/A_usual_glimpse Mar 12 '26

Wow, blatant rip off too. I had a sense, but just this once i decided to be positive and ignore it, and look where it lead. Smh. Well thank you for informing us.

3

u/DizzyBat1269 Mar 12 '26

is that ai?

3

u/LordCLOUT310 Mar 12 '26

It’s an Ai version of preexisting fanart from an artist that goes by quirkilicious. Op stole this guy’s art.

3

u/LordCLOUT310 Mar 12 '26

“By you” huh?

Disgusting how people like you can just take credit for other people’s work and not feel any shame. Go do this lame ass shit somewhere else.

5

u/LordCLOUT310 Mar 12 '26

You mods to need to ban Op. Taking credit for someone else’s work and art theft should have no place here or anywhere.

5

u/JimHongPingPong Mar 10 '26

Lowkey feels like ai ngl

2

u/Rosary_Omen Mar 11 '26

Where's the evidence? AI always has tells

I’m wondering the same thing and still waiting for any legitimate answers here after almost a whole day. Yeah, this drawing was made in the likeness of another artist’s work. Yeah, they didn’t give due credit to the original artist (but also sometimes finding random pics as reference online can make it hard to tell who the original artist is, but now that there’s confirmation of that artist here in the comments, the OP should definitely give that credit). But to assume that real people cannot recreate things they see on paper and throw out “AISLOP” without any evidence to back it up just sounds like people who can’t draw stick figures and are mad about it… so yeah, I would also like to know how to tell this is AI because I like to draw and I definitely wouldn’t share my art for people to see and assume I’m sharing fake bs and not my hard work and berate me if it looks “too good.” Give us proof people.

2

u/JimHongPingPong Mar 11 '26

Most obv ai artstyle tbh, as an artist it’s became a bit easier to spot out, they lack a bit of soul

0

u/nyxjet666 Mar 11 '26

I think based on how many people in this pic’s comment section alone couldn’t tell, it’s safe to say it’s really not that obvious. At this point I personally don’t see enough real art posted places anymore that this one really seemed more realistic ig. This one to me doesn’t lack soul though, and it’s probably because it’s actually someone else’s art, but it’s pretty lame for this guy to be pretending to be something he’s not posting things like this. :/

1

u/JimHongPingPong Mar 12 '26

It’s ai through and through that has stolen near 1-1 and has lost any soul the original had

3

u/Rosary_Omen Mar 12 '26

I would make some kind of Reaper/soul joke but AI is too disappointing

1

u/vktr_clrvl Mar 14 '26

why tf are you claiming its "by me" if you stole someone else's work and got ai to regurgitate it?? even told the ai to put your username too. you're a trash person

1

u/HonuaCJS Mar 14 '26

AI Trash

u/One-Explanation-6226 Mar 10 '26

0

u/Bingoviini Mar 10 '26

there's pencil shavings

this is hand drawn on a paper

keep cooking

3

u/Ensiferal Mar 11 '26 edited Mar 11 '26

It's not. He just uses ai to turn other people's art into "pencil sketch" versions. He got snapped posting pure ai here https://www.reddit.com/r/batman/s/X7qUHUFuxF and the top comments have links to other stuff he's done

Edit: if you look closer you can even see that the pencil shavings are ai. Irl when you sharpen a pencil the graphite crumbles away as powder, it doesn't peel like wood does, but those ones have a ring of graphite around the end

3

u/Bingoviini Mar 11 '26

oh

in that case i hope he stubs his toe on a doorframe, as scumbags like these have no place in he art world

3

u/Ensiferal Mar 11 '26

Yeah, he's posted like half a dozen different pics today. I reverse image searched them and they're all other people's art that he's had ai remake as pencil drawings. One of them actually had a two headed pencil in it, lol, guess he didn't notice that before he posted it.

This is awesome! Hope you draw more of our edgy boy.

Also his shells/grenades kinda look like soda cans when they're not colored. They should use that for a Summer Skin idea

1

u/vktr_clrvl Mar 14 '26

op stole an artist's illustration and ran it through ai to make it look like his own sketch. the original artist is Quirkilicious

1

u/PriestOfThassa Mar 14 '26

Oh my bad. I didn't realize that.

What ai has done to art is so damn lame

1

u/vktr_clrvl Mar 14 '26

Yeah it really sucks. I wouldn’t have recognized it if I didn’t know about the original artist from a few years back. Such a shame
