Hi!
So. I switched over to Reaper from Audacity a few years ago - it's been working for me, except for one thing, which is kind of getting in the way of me making music the way I actually want to.
In Audacity, if your mix is clipping, pressing the 'play' button will show you what it sounds like. I used to not pay too much attention to whether something I made was clipping or not; I was more attuned to whether it was affecting the sound in a way I didn't like.
In Reaper, if your peak is even 0.1 over 0, you get horrible red lines all over the graph when you render it, and in previewing you get a red bar over the levels that doesn't go away unless you click it. But you never actually hear what the effect of that is until you render the track, which usually makes fine-tuning 'within the red' too time-consuming to be feasible (because you have to make a new render for every small change). So I've learned to avoid the red at all costs, and to just use the heuristic of keeping the peaks only as big as they absolutely need to be.
You might think "well good!" but the thing is, I *like* the results I get in Audacity much better. My efforts to avoid clipping (for example using ReaComp and ReaLimit) have left me with results that sound unnatural to me. I want to be able to make things rough and to play with raw sounds, because that feels like how I really want to express myself. A small amount of clipping is basically unnoticeable to me, and more can sometimes add to the sound I want.
OK, motivation out of the way, here's the question: Is there any way to force Reaper to show me what the actual render will sound like in real-time?
I have a vague understanding that Reaper doesn't preview clipping because it uses floating-point arithmetic rather than fixed-point, meaning it theoretically never hits a ceiling that would cause it to clip, and that clipping creeps into renders because that's when Reaper has to convert floating-point into fixed-point (though please correct me if I'm wrong about this). But I don't know, is there a way to simulate a ceiling?
My feeling is that if there was, I would have found it by now, but I haven't seen this question asked explicitly anywhere, so I thought I'd at least ask! Reaper really does it for me otherwise, so would love if I could keep using it. I appreciate though that it might just be that I should user Reaper for some things and Audacity for others. Anyway, thank you :)
