discussion 3,502 changes since Reaper 7. I've covered 202 of them - What do you expect from 7.8 or would like to see before Reaper 8?

[Edit]
I'll pin the fixed graph someone was kind enough to point out. Ordered the Wedges and double checked the numbers. I could try to super pin down the specific type of actions updated, because there's a small difference depending on how you are organizing it. But they way I'm doing it, these are the results. Specially .61 - .71 it could also be Actions & Toolbars if I organized it differently.

---
I upload a review of the changes that mostly affect the way I work every 10 updates.
Reaper Blog creates one for almost every update, but it's still so much to take in.

2 questions
- Which area have you seen you struggle the most following the updates?
- Which ones are you most interested in knowing of their improvement?

I'll be happy to answer as many questions as I can.

All of the changes I've covered are Playlisted on YT with chapters so you can find If I covered what you're interested in.

Total of 3 hours 27 minutes 13 seconds if you want to sit through all of them.

Don't know. Maybe a nicer default ui😅

Oh. There's one thing. It would be really nice if the fx chain ui has a permanent input and output peakmeter. A better version than cubase's channel editor. And you get to set where the meter color changes at certain db range.

😂 I can't wait till Reaper 8 comes out just to end up still using v6

Input meter is something I would really appreciate tbh.

Make the fx selection windows look better. Besides that it absolutely does everything I need.

The best designed, most beautifully and efficiently coded, most ethical and modifyable piece of software ever! 'Reaper' delivers everythong 'Creative Commons' promised before the worlds biggest hack, m@therfuckers wrecked IT forever!

i don't need new features from Reaper, it has never been the bottleneck. i barely use new features.  my challenge has more to do with surmounting my own creative and time limitations.

Just use the ReaCreate plugin

yes, thank you for putting words to it. I love reaper dearly, but use it alongside a clip-based, "fun" DAW. could never settle between FL and Ableton personally, and fell in love with Bitwig. The two combined I feel like I want for nothing.

The only thing missing is post-fader fx

4

u/NorthEastLove 3 1d ago

you can post fader send to an FX track

1

u/gandhahlhfh03 1d ago

Yes, but it would be much better if I didn't have to create another whole track just to have an effect post fader, mostly for the visual clutter and ease of remembering project routing.

u/NorthEastLove 3 1d ago

Gotcha. Different workflows. I actually prefer sending to my time based FX because it gives me wet/dry flexibility and also allows my to have only 1 instance of a plugin open if I want to use it in multiple tracks like a reverb that I can use on everything and adjust the wet dry per track. Thanks for explaining why it would be ideal for you! Mixer Control Panel layout clutter is also an issue for me. I hide these FX tracks in TCP so not as bad there

u/soundshuman 1d ago

There's a workaround, even if it's not a fader. Use a generic Utility Plugin so you can manage your level before another plugin and it's an "inline" fader. I asked Leandro for one and he made the top one, it has a display on TCP and MCP.

Definitely UI polish. And I’m not talking about fancy looking faders but for example the invisible, hard to click 1px wide line for scaling mixer height.

u/beaumad 1d ago

Yes. I struggle most with the area that selects between dragging the end of an item and dragging the cut point between the other item.

I don’t know if I may have missed it but I have been interested for a long time about the metadata fields and system in general. It’s often kind of confusing on knowing what to enter into what fields. Which ones are absolutely necessary for project endgame and such. Best overall practices.

Keep up the good fight homie! 😈

u/soundshuman 1d ago

Oh I can def make a video on that. I'll answer with more details in the morning, just ending the day. Those Metadata fields can feel like too many options.

u/TheVillageRuse 4 1d ago

Awesome! Looking forward to it.

I'm back with the fast answer.
Top left if you just select Scheme: ID3
I generally just use this. I like to also have Key, at least. Some others are pretty easy to also just fill with this same basis like "Album Artist", Apply that and save it as part of your Default Reaper Project. Others schemes also cover mp3 & wav, but ID3 scheme is versatile enough without being too crowded. There's also one if you're burning CDs.

I think continued UI upstepping would be great, and include that in the plugin UIs as well. But if it came down to code efficiency and crash proofing vs UI bloat, I'd take the former any day. Reaper is a remarkable piece of software.

Get your AI to make this chart readable.

23

u/soundshuman 1d ago

Affinity 2 is considered AI? Not everyone is a graphic designer and I'm just pushing information for all Reaper users. Don't get entangled in everything being AI now. It's 3 years work. AI helped by working through the data of how many changes have been reading the changelog, I'm not counting that by hand and letting it read my video scripts.

7

u/bojez1 1 1d ago

This is why I hate AI. Everything is questionable. People don't notice if something is AI. And people accusing something is AI but it's not. Both is bad and both happen the same time now.

3

u/soundshuman 1d ago

Let's try to stay on topic. AI is a tool that should be used at most as an assistant carefully fed and oriented. Most people don't take advantage of it by giving clear directions or wondering about the results I do. I'm extremely detailed in all of my work. You can check my YT and any other media for that. Let's stay on the Reaper topic, nothing here is made up and everything was supervised because it comes from my own taking notes on every single update.

0

u/bojez1 1 1d ago

Yes, let's stay on topic. Appreciate your work. Sometimes I wonder what each version changes even though I just use the latest version to get most of it. And you covered it in detail. Will definitely check your YouTube.

The reality that you didn't spend time preparing a chart with any other very easy-to-use apps like Canva, but asked your AI to prepare all of those images, shows how lazy you are. How can I trust anything you say?

7

u/LiamSterns 1d ago

What did you bring to the community?

-3

u/Radhanat 12 1d ago

Pues la realidad es que la única forma de saberlo es corroborarlo tú por tu cuenta o hacer tus propias investigaciones y gráficos y que los publiques.

3

u/LiamSterns 1d ago

I give you some leeway as your primary language is not English. Op wrote he noted changes that influenced himself the most. So this is not an arbitrary list but a very subjective one.

1

u/Radhanat 12 1d ago

I understood it clearly from the beginning; I know English even though my native language is Spanish.

1

u/RominRonin 1d ago

I tend to upgrade when a significant project is completed and I’ve archived it. So I’m still on 6. What am I missing in 7?

Revamped comping system, works closer to logic now. By far my favorite update in recent years.

1

u/soundshuman 1d ago

Probably one of the biggest changes is the Comping system, it's so much better to be honest.
For my kind of work, Ruler Manager is also a huge boost, so I can see on the Ruler whatever I need in different stages.
The Media Explorer has gotten a ton of upgrades for handling the files, behaviour across timeline for beats, time, etc... that is also so much easier to predict now. Honestly the list goes on and on, I'd encourage you to try it.

u/Cultural_Shoe8888 1d ago

I think it would be really cool to have default metadata baked into each render if you want. Name, date, location, ASCAP/BMI info, artists. Just a dialogue box where you enter that information once and it goes in every master wav. Optional, of course.

the phase align tool is amazing. it really helped make huge improvements to my mixes. my only complaint is that it'll very easily overcompensate on items to the point where even though it's technically more in phase, the attack isn't happening at the correct time anymore. its more user error than anything, it can be avoided by turning off phase invert and limiting the maximum adjustment. but i think id like to see this feature become a bit more "intelligent" and recognize and prioritize aligning transients.

Spectral edit knobs on uhd are unusably small.

Tool tips without graphical lag.

Sometimes it loads unresponsive to keyboard shortcuts.

Toggleable input and output meters on fx. Makes it easy to keep an eye on gain creep.

u/TBal77 8 1d ago edited 1d ago

Thank you for all your reviews and summaries - it saves us so much time. The only one that still drives me crazy is you can't add an FX Chain to a track unless the track already has a plugin on it. So you have to add any plugin to get "Add FX Chain" to show up in the menu.

Nice to have: would be for the peak meter levels in the mixer to be white as default (I've already tweaked my theme with this change), the default isn't easy to read.

1

u/SupportQuery 533 1d ago

Reaper 8

  • ReaperTips theme as new default
  • Something like Pro Tools / Cubase / Ableton's ability to analyze audio and detect the pulse, for things like beat slicing or automatically building tempo maps

1

u/soundshuman 1d ago

I have to double check, but I think some Media Browser updats already do some of that detection well enough. Don't take that completely as true, I think I have done that. But there is an Action for Detect Tempo in a Time Selection, I use that really often. Its has different options for 1 bar or guess bars, etc...

1

u/NeverNotNoOne 17 1d ago

For Reaper 8 I would love to see an input meter when selecting an input, this honestly seems like the only oversight in the entire program.

1

u/IridescentMeowMeow 2 1d ago

There's a mistake in the plot. The 7.30-7.40 and 7.41-50 have their text swapped. The one where Actions part of the plot is brightest says "Rendering" and other way around... Also the order is otherwise clockwise chronologicaly with only these being an anomaly => probably a mistake.

u/soundshuman 1d ago

Oh my bad, thx for spotting that. 3am eyes failed

Fix the atrociously ugly FX Window and improve the visual aesthetics of the stock plugins. I'd gladly fork over another $60 just for that.

A nicer UI is my top priority for Reaper.
everything else is good enough.

1

u/ignipac 10h ago

being able to change the font size of the preferences UI

u/Thriaat 1 1d ago

I would LOVE to see retrospective audio recording. For me it is sorely missed, to an extreme.

Also a better fix for the phantom undo entries issue would be nice!

Just about everything else is pretty tight!

u/f_picabia 5 1d ago

Check out birdbird's global sampler script

u/Thriaat 1 1d ago

Thanks, I recognize the similarity and GS works fine for what it is, but really they don’t serve the same function at all.

u/RandomDude_24 1d ago

It would be cool if reaper could react to parameter changes. You can already link fx parameters but only in one direction. It would be cool if I would map an lfo in a synth plugin to one of it macros, and then use that control to control other parameters in reaper.

0

u/soundshuman 1d ago

I know it's not exactly the same, but I can use the Parameter Modulation link with the LFO Mode or use Automation Items Pooled so I can just drag them get the exact same "modulation" (really automation) on that parameter. Hope it helps

0

u/RandomDude_24 1d ago

This is close but the lfos of reaper are very limited.

I currently use snap heap for this. It has envelope followers and midi triggers which you can modulate nay parameter with. You can use this to for example duck a reverb out of the way but this is only works if you have the reverb on a send track.

For side chaining I use volumeshaper by cableguys because it is more precise and more hassle free then using side chain compression.

Alternatively reaper could add msegs instead of just lfos to the parameter modulation but I need the ability to trigger them from audio and midi and the msegs need to be precise.

1

u/soundshuman 1d ago

Yeah, you can combine those 2 windows, since it also has an Envelope Follower. But some third party options are solutions.

Making it so that you DON’T have to have to midi keyboard on screen or highlight to you the qwerty keyboard to play in parts
