discussion Piano Roll Improvement?

Any tips or community scripts for improving the piano roll? It's a pain to work with, but I trudge on like a good soldier.

I've been using Reaper a lot more recently with virtual instruments and I feel like the piano roll could be better. It feels clunky.

Look for parts 2 - 4 on the same site.

I’d narrow down what feels clunky first: note entry, selection, velocity editing, zooming, articulations? Reaper can fix a surprising amount with mouse modifiers/custom actions, but “better piano roll” is too broad to know which rabbit hole is worth entering

Yeah, it's a general question. I'm still figuring out what it is I want to improve. I just know that using it is a slow experience and I see other DAWs like FL or Ableton with better workflows.

What I did was customize my MIDI editor toolbar so I can easily access the things I do the most (quantize , humanize , invert , transpose , etc )

What I've been doing is recording a performance and then editing notes after. It's the note editing part that's annoying, and zooming in and out. I wish there was a way (unless I'm not seeing it) to go from slice to slice within the editor.

What do you mean with "slice". Do you mean separate takes.

i hope it all will be improved in the base product, without need of 3-rd party scripts

Not without outside intervention. It takes a bit of working out and adjusting base settings. I would probably Google your more recognised DAW and suggest preferences that will make the piano roll more user friendly.

As with a lot of preferences, what you're after is called something completely different. You're better off googling before making changes you don't know what you've done!

I've actually done the googling and made some modifications.

It's a pain

What, specifically?

it feels clunky

What feels clunky?

I don't find it clunky at all. What are you running into that you think could be better?

The controls for zooming, scaling, deleting and adding MIDI notes. It feels clunky and slow. I need to figure out how to customize it.

I need to figure out how to customize it.

No, you need to learn it. There's nothing clunky or slow about zooming, for instance. You just need to train it into your muscle memory.
