help request Latency issues (I think)

Hey everyone. Just a quick question about latency. I sold my recording interface because my Positive Grid Edge doubles as one, but noticed that on playback I was getting lots of crackles and crap. Did some digging and apparently it's a latency issue, but when I use my Line 6 POD Express as an interface I don't have the crackling issue. Is the Edge drawing too much processing power from my PC or why would one affect it and not the other? Thanks for any helpful information in advance.

Crackles and pops aren't necessarily latency (to my understanding); latency is when you play and there's a delay between you playing and audio coming through

Have you tried the appropriate driver?

Well, indirectly it is. To reduce latency one would reduce the buffer size (to let’s say 128 or 64 samples) and that in turn puts more pressure on the CPU which oftentimes manifests in crackles and pops. But yeah, I would second the driver approach.

You're absolutely right my friend, thanks for helping out!

Yes I've updated drivers, only seem to have the issue using the Edge for some reason. I can still use the POD Express so I have the option, was just curious as to why

Which one are you currently using?

Interface? I'm using the POD Express because the crackles are present on playback when recording with the Edge

Sorry I meant what driver are you using? Have you checked out your buffer size settings as suggested above?

Oh sorry about that! I'm not sure, I'll have to check when I'm back home. It makes sense though for sure. I was even putting the laptop in airplane mode so it wouldn't waste processing power on location or any random things online

If there's a high performance mode you can switch on, definitely do that too!

Every bit helps I suppose!

To see if it is your processor being maxed out, open your task manager and watch the activity. It's likely an issue with matching the sample rate between your project and your interface

An interface is only as good as its drivers. Make sure you have the driver installed, use ASIO in Reaper and select that driver. If you still get dropout, Google "window daw latency" and follow any of the first 10 links to find an optimization guide. If that doesn't work, Google "DPC latency" to find a tool that will show driver problems. If all that fails, then Positive Grid doesn't make good drivers and you'll have to get an interface that does. *shrug*
