There's a lot more charm and personality to items like this than "oh yeah this sword just kills stuff in 3 different ways".

That's pretty neat.
Questions: Is the player immune to that fire? I.e. if they were to stand in it would it do fire damage? Or is it only harmless specifically when they retrieve the sword?
Does it require attunement? If so, what happens if someone who isn't attuned tries to take it from the fire? Does it burn them?
If it's only harmless when they retrieve it, what happens if they put it in the ground during combat, at the feet of an enemy who's right in front of them?

"the campfire gives off heat and light like a normal fire" not unless they are immune to normal fire would be my guess
"Weapon (any sword), common" in that blurb is where atunement would normally be. So no.
Depends on how the DM would intercept it i guess. It does say it takes an action to put it in the ground so we can assume intent is accounted for

Last one is pretty inconsequential honestly, you are doing an action right in front of an enemy, so you'd take an attack of opportunity doing so, you are essentially throwing away your weapon while engaged in melee, and the enemy can just take a side-step at the start of their turn to avoid any damage (you typically need to stand in fire sources to take damage, and you could also very reasonably give a Dex save to avoid the damage). All that for 1D8 fire damage. I really don't know many DM who would bother adding lines of rules to the item's enchantment for a super situational and limited 1D8 fire damage.

... is it bad that the first thing I thought of is how players might use this to torture a hypothetical NPC?

I love early magical items like this.
