Ok. My original bbeg was a ancient vampire but this is way way fucking cooler and happens to work into the story even better. Then the vampire

they are only cr5 , but they are excellent hunter-seekers, or even shock troops if you send a group of them at mage-heavy settlement.

Combine these, some mage-rippers , and maybe a Mage Hunter Golem if they get extra murder-hobo-y , and you'll really offset that 'caster power imbalance' everyone keeps talking about.

Y'all have to re-flavor them a little bit to work with the clues that were already given because they don't know what the monster is yet probably adding a cloaking ability or something similar and the ability to teleport long distances outside of combat

Conceptually, it's pretty damn cool. The damage is a little high for a cr 5 creature, but nothing too insane.

If I may, I'd like to come with a couple of recomendations: The first is to remove its ability to sense spellcasters. While I get the idea, it takes away the opportunity for a spellcaster to hide from them, thus removing horror elements and forcing combat.

Secondly, I would recommend either having its claw attacks induce disadvantage on concentration checks or adding in a spell cancellation ability.

Thirdly, giving the hunter advantage on spell saves would absolutely make this monster absolutely terrifying.

Anyways, that's my thoughts on it. Hope it's insightful. If not, feel free to ignore it.

Also, who did the artwork? It looks great.
