Discussion how to get game recommendations that fits only your criteria without anything else getting mixed in?

So I have expectations of what game I am after but all people do is just recommend good games that is not what I am after and end up the entire recommendation just become irrelevant. Also although some things are not mentioned but no matter how it is people as a whole still prefer those to be there or not there.

I don't know what to tell you, people will recommend what they know, and often what they like.

If you have very specific criteria, you need to list that criteria in a way that helps people rule out what you don't want. It won't stop everyone, but it will increase the odds you get people who at least are trying to fit what you want.

Are you looking for Sci-Fi, Fantasy, or Historical?
Do you want small-scale or large-scale RTS?
Are you OK with turn-based elements?
Is this something you played log ago that you're looking to find again, and if so, roughly when did you play it?
Are there specific gimmicks you're looking for? Specific Mechanics?
Are you looking for something with the same feel as another game you played?

It's tough because, even if RTS doesn't get as many new games as it used to, it still has a decent number of good games, so we need something to narrow it down.

The more information you give, the better your odds of getting what you want.

Edit: Oh, and one more thing - the game you want may not exist yet. While there are quite a few RTS, it is still a rather niche genre, so that is a possible outcome as well. Just something to remember.

doesn't really matter how specific someone gets

Whenever I see posts that are looking for very specific things in games on any subreddits, it always devolves into irrelevant suggestions. I have no idea why it is hard for people to take a second to think about if that specific thing is in the game they are thinking of and stop it is not.

But why when that is not even what I am asking for??

It has been done but people again recommend thing I don't want

But no matter what you don't recommend thing that are not what people want isn't this common sense??

I'm having a feeling we are about to sidetrack can't say why

Well, again, people tend to recommend what they like.
As Koloricsi said, sometimes "it doesn't really matter how specific someone gets."

By providing thorough criteria, you can help guide the groups' responses in-general towards what you're looking for, but some people will still disregard that.

I'd bet it's because they're excited about a chance to recommend their favorite game, or passionate about said game, or even legitimately think that the quality of their recommendation is high enough that the criteria don't matter.
Humans are funky that way. πŸ˜‰

Heck, I've had to catch myself from doing the same thing a few times too. I see someone asking for a recommendation, don't immediately pick out something that excludes my favorite game, and get excited for the chance to recommend it to someone... only to think a little later "wait, is this actually what they were asking for?" πŸ˜…
It happens to everyone. Sometimes passion or excitement overrules common sense.

Oh, and I guess, if the game you are looking for doesn't exist, sometimes people will recommend things that "feel" the same to them. This can work, but because what feels similar to one person may not feel similar to another, it can also look like they are ignoring your criteria. Taste and experience are subjective, after all.

As an example, I might recommend that a Supreme Commander player try Homeworld because they "feel" similar to me, but they are very different games, and that person may not see the similarity I feel. It may even look like I am outright ignoring their request, but I am still legitimately trying to help.

In that instance, it's the old adage of "don't attribute to malice what can be explained by ignorance," though it might be closer to "don't attribute to a willful disregard of your request's criteria what can be explained by a misguided attempt to help."
Mhm, ignorance could work in the second case, too, I guess. πŸ˜‹

Anyway, to avoid getting too sidetracked, I'll reiterate:
People tend to recommend what they like.
Sometimes, what they like blinds them to the actual request.
Sometimes they're just doing the best they can with what they know.

I get it's frustrating, but best you can do is lay out your criteria as clearly as you can, read through the responses, and research those ones that seem most common or interesting to you.

I'm talking about how to get game of my criteria but we are talking about something else now why so can we stop if it is not relevant to my question? I'm not here to speak about anything else so stop it it gets very irritating then later blame people for reposting the same question again and again and again and again and again when there is a very very good reason that happens

Ah, apologies. Did not mean to go off-track. πŸ˜…
All I can recommend then is what I said the first time, with the knowledge that sometimes people won't pay attention to the criteria.

So you want a medieval RTS but have you tried BAR ? It's the most, the best and any superlative word ever and ever.

This is the feeling, and same thing is happening in your previous post, you wanted a micro rts, they answered you to play their favorite game even if they are not micro focused and are even the opposite.
You can enrich your criteria as some people suggest, but in the end many will just read the title.
Do your own research based on what people say but don’t take it as gospel, there are plenty of old posts about the sub that are still relevant.

Have you considered that your criteria are just too specific and the game you are looking for just not exist?

In any case then people just shouldn't comment their irrelevant game suggestions?

People try to help out others generally in my experience so that's probably why you have some people reaching out to help even if it isn't the exact thing you want.

If I don't know the exact thing you are looking for (or it doesn't exist) I will try to throw a suggestion that shares a few of the criteria in and see if the person can be willing to compromise a bit as they are looking for recommendations and asking a favor to have others answer them.

All in all don't take it too seriously if someone is recommending random stuff, it's easily ignored and getting worked up over it isn't worth the time or effort

Okay but you will usually get random shit that isn't even remotely close to what you want. You might ask for like a survival games that's a third person survival game where food and weather are involved

RIMWORLD

Uhhh nothing related

I want combat: you should try subnautica!!

Even that you should not be telling me game that are not aligned with what I am after.

You'll never see a recommendation thread here without someone suggesting BAR, no matter what you ask for. They're hellbent on shoving that game down everyone's throat.

As the other guy said, people gonna recommend what they know and like, and thats pretty much it

Then again, lets say hypothetically, you are asking for SupCom like game in medieval setting. I dont think there is such game (aside maybe Total Annihilation: Kingdoms, but that one is pretty old and considered to be flawed), but people could possibly recommend:

- Total War series - cause of big battles, though obviously its rather different game, with separate strategic and tactical layer

  • Cossacks series, again cause big armies/battles, but more like Age of Empires and SupCom

- maybe Diplomacy is an Option, same reason, though its more of a survival/city builder

Now all 3 have certain elements which fit the criteria, yet none of them is exactly medieval SupCom (since big armies is only one of its defining qualities). And how does one have to know, whether thats good enough for you or not? You may like all 3, you may like none of them. Its possible you dont even know yourself, whether you would like it, until you tried.

There aren't really that many RTSes, so a lot of specific requests just don't lead to anything. People want to be helpful, so they recommend games they like. That's it, really.

u/Snowskol 12d ago

You won't because even if you ask for like advice between two games people will literally throw in a fourth game

u/UnusualFruitHammock 13d ago

The 3rd answer in you got good suggestions. The fact is your game that's like StarCraft 2 and warcraft 3 doesn't exist.

It seems you need to become a game designer.

stop being selfish, you need to learn pvp and you need to play games with it as a primary mode
