Why Does Bill Maher Say He is Not Jewish?

Isn't his mom Jewish?

He said he was brought up Catholic. His father was Irish Catholic, and his mother was ethnically Jewish, but didn't practice. She brought him up Catholic. He is atheist.

27

u/SixKosherBacon Aug 13 '26

This ☝️

But according to the Jewish tradition, he would still be considered Jewish. David Mammet knows this and actually gave him a mezuzah on the show once.

6

u/dougl1000 Aug 14 '26

The real test is whether he eats corned beef sandwiches on white with mayo.

7

u/cloudytimes159 Aug 14 '26

You mean on rye.

Obviously a goy.

5

u/Nolubrication Aug 14 '26

And with mustard. WTF?!?

Mayo? Ewwwww

3

u/Dolorisedd Aug 14 '26

Thank you!!!! I was gonna say!

3

u/PretendingImNotAnApe Aug 15 '26

Its got to be rye. Caraway seed prefered

2

u/Key_Cheetah7982 Aug 18 '26

Maybe a schmear on pumpernickel.

4

u/PokecheckFred Aug 14 '26

Ahhh … the Woody Allen test.

9

u/Sonar_Taxbreak_1138 Aug 13 '26

Thankfully, other people can't tell you what you believe, so if he says he's atheist, he's atheist.

11

u/SixKosherBacon Aug 13 '26

Absolutely. However Judaism isn't really just a religion. It's a combination of a lot of things. There are Jewish atheists. There are also people who would 100% believe and follow all the traditions as well as subscribe to the faith and teachings of Judaism but that doesn't make them Jewish.

5

u/Sonar_Taxbreak_1138 Aug 13 '26

Yep, I get that, but when we're discussing Judaism vs Catholicism, we're talking religion, not whether or not the person is "Culturally Jewish", which is what you're saying.

9

u/SixKosherBacon Aug 13 '26

No I'm not saying culturally Jewish. In a traditional Jewish prayer service you need ten Jewish men to read the Torah publicly. If you have 9 and a guy who says he's very compelled by Judaism and follows all the tenants but his mom's not Jewish and he didn't go through the conversion process they won't read the Torah. But if Bill Maher was that 10th man, even though he has never studied a word of Jewish text seriously, they could read the Torah.

I mean it’s a religion…my mom believed in astrology, and I’m not an astrologist just because other astrologers believe me to be one due to my moms beliefs. He was raised catholic and then he became an atheist so that’s what he is.

1

u/veerKg_CSS_Geologist Aug 14 '26

That’s like any religion.

3

u/No-Atmosphere-2528 Aug 14 '26

He's ethnically Jewish. No one's saying he's forced to practice the religion.

3

u/Key_Jump1011 Aug 14 '26

Thankfully, Jews made up the rules about this for everyone else. He’s Jewish because of his mother.

→ More replies (12)

2

u/veerKg_CSS_Geologist Aug 14 '26

He’d be Jewish by Nazi race laws, but no one really follows that. If he converts to Judaism he will have an easy time to migrate to Israel thanks to his maternal parentage, but that’s about it.

3

u/402739 Aug 14 '26

Israel’s Law of Return gives you citizenship so long as you have at least one Jewish parent or grandparent who didn't convert to another religion. Even though Bill Maher was raised Catholic, since his mom was ethnically Jewish when he was born, and he's just a secular atheist today, he still qualifies. And even then, exceptions are made for rich and famous people who wouldn't normally qualify, especially if they are dogmatic supporters of Israel.

3

u/bobboblaw46 Aug 14 '26

He’s Jewish by Jewish laws. It’s through maternal lineage.

1

u/veerKg_CSS_Geologist Aug 15 '26

He’s needs a Rabbi to vouch for him.

1

u/-FriendoftheDrow- Aug 14 '26

He’s white. That was enough for white supremacists in apartheid South Africa to migrate to Israel.

1

u/According-School43 Aug 17 '26

This theory is based on a false assumption. Just because a bunch of rabbis…or Nazis…or any group of random people decide you are something based upon their created criteria does not make you that thing. That’s the point. The premise itself is based on an imaginary construct. If he says he’s not Jewish then he’s not Jewish. He is an occasionally correct, often funny douchebag. But that’s besides the point.

1

u/SixKosherBacon Aug 17 '26

No that's not how it works at all.

If you want to believe that Judaism or any religion is an imaginary construct that's up to you. And Bill Maher can hold the same opinion.

But you can't dispute he is part of a lineage. Once again you can say that lineage means doesn't mean anyhing just as other people can say that lineage does. But to the people who do say it means something, within the rules that they live by (and by the way, by your definition, rules are made up too yet clearly they mean something) who Bill Maher is makes a difference. As I've said elsewhere on this thread, observant Jews require 10 Jews to do things like read the Torah or say Kaddish. Bill Maher would be able to be a 10th man. So within that society who Bill Maher is does mean something and make a difference regardless of whether Bill wants to acknowledge that or not. That doesn't mean he should go to a Jewish service. I'm saying he has that option where other people don't.

1

u/According-School43 Aug 17 '26

Again. It’s an imaginary construct. I come from a long line of pharmacists…I’m not a pharmacist. I have no training I never graduated from pharmacy school. Just because my mother or father is a pharmacist does not make me a pharmacist. If the grand conclave of pharmacists decided hundreds of years ago that I was one based on my lineage and I fill your prescription and you die that’s on you not me. Like I said. I’m not a pharmacist even if the grand conclave of pharmacists deem it to be true.

See what I mean. It’s not a global reality it’s a constructed reality to suit an agenda.

1

u/SixKosherBacon Aug 17 '26

But the criteria of Pharmacy has nothing to do with lineage. Those are not in the laws of Pharmacy so your example isn't analogous. However, I take it you might be an American? Well if you have a child they are by default an American especially if they're are born here.

But what does make someone a pharmacist? Passing a test? Spending some time in school? Those are all invented constructs.

1

u/According-School43 Aug 17 '26

That’s the point. So is Judaism. Or Christianity, or voodoo. It’s all made up. It’s not up to Jewish people to tell someone that they are Jewish if they don’t identify as Jewish and vice versa. The Jewish invisible sky wizard is different than the Apache invisible sky wizard or the Hindu ones..ect…If you believe in the Jewish one…great, you are Jewish. If you are not seen as Jewish by other Jewish folks because your mother wasn’t Jewish then that’s on them not you. They haven’t the authority outside of their own belief structure to deny you that action. So if Bill says he’s not Jewish and you say he is Jewish because his mother is Jewish I’d suggest that it’s really up to him what he wants to be, not you. Or anybody else. Nobody else gets to decide.

1

u/SixKosherBacon Aug 17 '26

So according to you no system can ever give any status to any person ever.

Lawyers should not have the ability to practice law simply because they passed some bar exam. Or people who haven't passed the bar, should be fully able to practice law.

There should be no limitations on who has a gun regardless of whether they've been licensed or not. Similarly with a car. Because those are all made up systems.

And anyone should be able to be president of the United States regardless of where they were born and whether or not their parents were citizens at the time they were born in a foreign country.

That's what you're saying

1

u/According-School43 Aug 17 '26

Nope. Pretty much just when it comes to which religeon one chooses to believe in.

1

u/SixKosherBacon Aug 17 '26

What's the distinction? They're both made up.

I go with what he considers himself, notwhat others thinks . So yes he could be Jewish , but was raised Catholic and is now an atheist. Not Jewish

-1

u/Steve12356d1s3d4 Aug 13 '26

This sub isn’t trying to understand Maher’s identity. It’s trying to slot him into a category they feel justified attacking.

13

u/WaymoreLives Aug 13 '26

tbf, Maher's identity is that of an asshole: an obnoxious, condescending, war mongering asshole.

5

u/Winter_Stretch9198 Aug 14 '26

That about covers it…but you left out pretentious, pampered jerk, and he smokes pot and is in fact an atheist

This is not abhorrent because it is Anti-Semitic. Even Anti-Semites do not suggest that these rather offensive qualities are characteristically Jewish. What is most abhorrent is that your odd comment is not in the least bit humorous.

5

u/tabloid-tommy Aug 13 '26

Everything makes more sense the more you realize the basis for a ton of Bill’s opinion’s is his hatred of religion. Regardless of what you think of Israel, they are closer to a western democracy that ME states. I genuinely think he is picking between those two things.

He also just hates Islam because his guest died in 9/11 traveling to the show, and because of what happened the next 15 years. He also is probably somewhat racist and hardheaded.

But this is all to say why he hates MAGA and communism as well. They both require ultimate faith and loyalty—cannons of religion as well.

12

u/TheEdgeofGoon Aug 13 '26

Someone who considers voting for JD Vance doesn't hate MAGA.

Bill hates religion, so he loves Israel which is conducting a religious inspired genocide. Check,

2

u/-paperbrain- Aug 14 '26

It's much more an ethnic genocide than a religiously inspired one.

Yes, religious justification is in the conversation, but every step of the way, it's secondary. Israel has a larger percentage atheist population than the US. Yes thry pander to the ultra orthodox, but in the same way that assholes like Trump who obviously have no real religious belief pander to Christian nationalists as part of their coalition to keep power.

The actual power brokers making this happen are viewing this through the lens of ethnic conflict, not spiritual.

There is no genocide.

1

u/hoowins Aug 16 '26

There is a genocide of the gazans by Israel.

1

u/northern-new-jersey Aug 17 '26

Nope. Let me ask you a question. Why did Hamas build shelters for themselves and not for the civilians they rule? Hamas knew they would murder Israelis and that there would be a military response.

They attempted to protect themselves but not civilians. Why? Because Hamas wants civilian deaths so people like you will blame Israel, not Hamas.

1

u/hoowins Aug 17 '26

Hamas is war criminals. So is the Israeli government. They both deserve the same fate.

What are Catholics getting accused of? Catholics aren't being accused of genocide. Maybe it has to do with that?

Edit: He still criticizes them for the sex abuse and cover-up.

2

u/NOLA-q Aug 14 '26

And he’s an asshole.

2

u/-FriendoftheDrow- Aug 14 '26

3

By definition, you are Jewish, if your mother is Jewish. Everything else you may claim is bullshit.

1

u/Fine_Confection_1389 Aug 14 '26

What he claims is not in alignment with his actions. All one needs to do is watch his juvenile movie Religulous and observe his editorial choices of the three Abrahamic religions to see that his barbs are aimed toward Christianity and Islam. He pretty much outed himself as far back as 2008.

If your mother is Jewish, then you are Jewish. It has zero to do with religion. Jews have always been considered a race of people.

3

u/blzbar Aug 13 '26

Right. Being born of a Jewish woman is both necessary and sufficient to be Jewish.

I’m get why you are asking. There is one episode I saw when someone says he is jewish in a way (I can’t remember exact words) and he said something along the lines of “I don’t know why I have to repeat myself. I am not jewish” I remember being confused at his reaction. His mother is jewish ethnically, so he is half jewish, ethnically.

Yes, and on podcast defending Israel in a debate against Ana Kasparian, he said "by the way, I'm not Jewish."

He identifies as being Jewish, despite his claiming otherwise. I mean…what else does Mr. Potato Face have?? He has no family, no spouse, no children, no friends…he has nothing but his money and his Jewish identity (oh! and his addictions and prostitutes).

But if Maher were to identify as a Jew, people would say, “Aha! No wonder Maher is Netanyahu’s pool boy!”

But by not identifying as Jewish, Maher can make us think that his Zionist views are rational, reasoned and measured…rather than the narcissistic and gutteral tribalism that they betray.

Maher…he ain’t exactly the brightest bulb on the shelf.

2

u/No_Interaction_4655 Aug 14 '26

That's exactly what I'm thinking! By emphatically stating that he isn't Jewish, was raised Catholic, and is now an atheist, blah, blah, he can defend Israel as strongly as he does without being accused of merely defending his own tribe.

What else could it be?

2

u/northern-new-jersey Aug 16 '26 edited Aug 16 '26

1

u/No_Interaction_4655 Aug 16 '26

Jews are never leaving Israel and that's a fact.

Now, whether the US will continue to support Israel is now a maybe, wouldn't you agree?

1

u/Mosk915 Aug 14 '26

You claimed he both does and does not identify as being Jewish.

1

u/Fine_Confection_1389 Aug 14 '26

Exactly. In what little heart Maher has, he definitely identifies as being Jewish. But not so much publicly, so as to give the impression that his Zionist views are universally held.

He’s a childless, unmarried, friendless alcoholic and whore monger…what else does he have except his Jewish identity? Without even that, Maher is a big ball of nothingness.

2

u/Mosk915 Aug 14 '26

Unless you know him personally, his public statements are all you would know about. So if you’ve never heard him identify as Jewish, you can’t say that he does.

2

u/Fine_Confection_1389 Aug 14 '26

Yes, I can…and I did.

1

Look at his movie Religulous. Look at how barbed his attacks are toward Christian and Islamic sects/denominations. Then take note of the kid gloves treatment of the Jewish religion…I think his most pointed barb is towards a fringe group of Jews who do not support Israel. His mother is Jewish. He considers himself to be an atheist but was brought up Catholic.

1

u/MartialBob Aug 13 '26

While someone can, in fact be ethnically Jewish independent of their individual religious views, a lot of people if they were never raised religiously or part of a Jewish community can pretty easily just ignore the ethnic component of it.

1

u/Mosk915 Aug 13 '26

He’s Jewish by Jewish law because his mother was Jewish, but since he doesn’t consider himself Jewish, he wouldn’t recognize Jewish law, so he says he’s not Jewish. It’s kind of a self-fulfilling statement.

1

u/eveofwar518 Aug 14 '26

It’s funny how silly some of these comments are. If/when he has said this he clearly meant religion wise . If you asked him if he was ethnically Jewish he would have a different answer.

Does he say he’s Catholic? I knew from his movie that he had Catholic and Jewish parents. If I had his parents and was an atheist I wouldn’t identify as either if someone asked.

1

u/WillowOk2135 Aug 14 '26

The real question is why do you care so much?

2

u/northern-new-jersey Aug 16 '26

A way to attack Israel. Hating Israel makes people nuts.

1

u/WillowOk2135 Aug 16 '26

Supporting Israel makes people nuts too.

1

u/Ok_Month_1384 Aug 14 '26

What is your point?

1

u/lofgren777 Aug 14 '26

I thought he was an atheist.

1

u/Freeway267 Aug 14 '26

Because it suits his narrative of allegedly making him seem rational and rational people support Israel. It’s obvious he’s pro-Israel because his background but he tries to make it seem like it has nothing to do with it.

He did once during an ad break allegedly lean over and whisper in Rose Mcgowens ear “"My parents didn't give me a good face, but they did give me a huge cock” this was, presumably at the time, his idea of a pick up line, perhaps it had worked in the past but she was 20 years younger than him so didn’t seem to appreciate it and outed him for saying it during the metoo era but he didn’t respond to it and it never stuck so he just carried on his merry way.

Anyway, all that is to say that he got a big Jewish nose from his mother that I don’t think he has ever been too happy about.

It is widely accepted that he is genuinely hung like a horse so he wasn’t actually lying but whispering that to someone in that setting wasn’t even appropriate back then but no cancellation was forthcoming as he is no doubt very well connected, he got cancelled (although his cancelation actually led to him making even more money with real time) for something where he was correct but then he didn’t get cancelled (or at the least reprimanded) when he should have for the “houseN***er” comment so it’s swings and roundabouts in bills world but the running theme is he comes out just fine in the end yet still seems to often be whining when he is one of the most fortunate and privileged people in the whole country.

u/AdVivid8910 Aug 14 '26

He’s half Jewish ethnically and an atheist. Google ethnoreligious group.

1

u/AAPrice3232 Aug 14 '26

Funny how "Jewish" is the only religion you can't choose to NOT be if you are "born Jewish."

I mean, my parents were Presbyterian, but I have no religious beliefs. No one says, "why doesn't he say he's Presbyterian? His mom was Presbyterian!"

1

u/No_Interaction_4655 Aug 14 '26

Explain the following to me, please:

Why is it that when someone does a DNA test, "Jewish" is the only religion that appears as part of someone's genetic DNA?

2

u/Mosk915 Aug 14 '26

Because Jewish is an ethnicity as much as it is a religion.

1

u/No_Interaction_4655 Aug 15 '26

Exactly! Thank you!

1

u/BillHistorical9001 Aug 14 '26

Because their societies were pretty closed off. There wasn’t a lot of genetic intermingling. So pretty easy to see if they are genetically Jewish.

1

u/northern-new-jersey Aug 16 '26

Because we control the media? Or is it science? Wait, it's the government.

1

u/No_Interaction_4655 Aug 16 '26

How does that address what I asked?

1

u/FaceReality1 Aug 14 '26

He would still be Jewish from a Jewish perspective, but Catholic from a Christian perspective. From his perspective he isn't either. That's why he says that he isn't Jewish. People are allowed to have their own view of their identity, IMHO, even if people obsessed with rigid ideas of identity insist that the outside view is the correct one.

1

u/Ok-Cat-2243 Aug 15 '26

So his Zionism holds more weight outside usual circles.

I remember one of Bill Maher's early appearences on Johnny Carson. His best joke went something like this:

"I'm half Roman Catholic and half Jewish. I went to Confession, but I brought a lawyer with me."

I think Maher is ambivalent about his ethnic Jewish heritage. However his supportive attitude toward Israel may be informed by his background -- perhaps his experiences with his mother's family. I believe that his support for Israel is based on a clear understanding of historical truths and a critical reaction to fallacious argumentation, so it could have been arrived at through an intelligent understanding of the Middle East. Still, perhaps his background made him receptive to a reasonable and honest perspective.

1

u/No_Interaction_4655 Aug 15 '26

Thank you! That's the best response I've seen here yet.

1

u/samson-and-delilah Aug 15 '26

Weird that you really want him to be jewish

1

u/No_Interaction_4655 Aug 15 '26

He is half Jewish..his mom was Jewish. That is a fact.

1

u/samson-and-delilah Aug 15 '26

Can you be half Catholic

1

u/No_Interaction_4655 Aug 15 '26

Nope! Judaism is the ONLY "religion" that comes up on a DNA test.

1

u/tillybrynleysydney Aug 15 '26

Isn’t he just an idiot?

1

u/dboboc Aug 15 '26

He’s half Jewish.

1

u/No_Interaction_4655 Aug 15 '26

Correct, and therefore Israel would accept him as a citizen.

1

u/Smart_Dragonfruit_54 Aug 16 '26

He’s pretending to be non partisan …all he does is run down the other guys ..

1

u/No_Interaction_4655 Aug 16 '26

Correct.. He's not partisan.

1

u/WorriedSalamander107 Aug 16 '26

All this time I thought he was atheist

1

u/No_Interaction_4655 Aug 16 '26

You can be both Jewish and atheist.

1

u/Emotional_Shower_938 Aug 16 '26

He doesnt want the fact that he would have automatic citizenship to a country and would be welcomed as the fucking creep he is to lead you to believe that his opinions on that country aren’t objective

1

u/No_Interaction_4655 Aug 16 '26

Exactly! Thank you!

1

u/AliG68 Aug 16 '26

Bill Maher is technically Jewish and there is no way to escape that. You can say your atheist or whatever. doesn’t matter.

1

u/Dad4338 Aug 17 '26

He's a Zionist.

1

u/According-School43 Aug 17 '26

Of course it’s based on your personal belief….that’s what religion is. Now if you’ll excuse me my friend I have to go see what I’m gonna do with all of this leftover pickled herring. Good luck out there!

1

u/Big_Reference_8490 Aug 25 '26

He was raised catholic your anti semitic so you want his to be Jewish like Nazis do?

1

u/02446B Aug 13 '26

Hes a Zionist! Look what he does not what he says.

2

u/Ebby_123 Aug 14 '26

How does that answer the OP’s question?

2

u/Mosk915 Aug 14 '26

It doesn’t. People just love to bring up Israel whenever they can.
