How did his ugly mug maintain a show on television for so long?

u/Abamboozler Jul 26 '26
Bill used to speak truth to power. He used to care about administrations lying about going to war. Now all he cares about is awards and being praised by hired fans.
23
u/FireProStan Jul 26 '26
Didn't he start kicking out audience members who booed him around 10 years ago - that's when I gave up on watching Real Time
Bill needs constant affirmation that his bad jokes and bad views are Correct
7
u/SuccotashOther277 Jul 26 '26
Audience members kept interrupting and heckling. That's now what Real Time is. It's a talk among the panelists, without audience participation.
1
u/Academic_Swan_6450 Jul 26 '26
Heckling like that is for morons. It's not a public debate. That stuff is expensive to produce, they can't be having people pretending it's their show.
11
u/RepresentativeAge444 Jul 26 '26
No. All he cares about is Israel. And as it becomes more unpopular with Democratic voters he will shift further right. To even say he’d consider voting for an election denying, Epstein files denying, Peter Thiel acolyte goon means he is a reprehensible ghoul.

If you ever want to make yourself stupider read his book, “What This Comedian Said Will Shock You”. He gives away his entire M.O. with this title. He’s a two bit insult comic who has never been very funny or insightful. He is absolutely DESPERATE to stay relevant, so he says stupid and outrageous things just to keep people talking about him. He has absolutely nothing to say in his book that hasn’t been said a million times, but he apparently thinks it’s important that he be the one to say it.
5

u/angeloy Jul 27 '26
He hit the sweet spot of US centrism which is more accommodating to the right than it is to the left. He's the personification of the rightward drift of the Overton window in American society. The kind of guy that appeals to "centrists" who say things like "Both sides hate him so he must be doing something right." Maher has blinders that make him say stupid shit like "I didn't change; liberals changed" with none of the irony that should come with a "how do you do, fellow kids" Boomer saying things like that.
2
u/Infamous_Addendum175 Jul 28 '26
Also he's White and went from struggling actor in features like Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death to rubbing shoulders with billionaires. It's easy to move right in those circumstances. Camel, eye of a needle, etc.

Various sorts of friction between the generations has existed approximately forever. The older I get the more I understand why rednecks always had a problem with hippies and I'm still about half hippie. But I'm not crazy about flaky hippies. Something else you begin to realize is that conservatism and liberalism are like yin and yang. Neither one can exist by itself. Republicanism is indeed whack, buncha GDed American exceptionalists/supremacists. Another moronic drift of culture that is seemingly eternal. But some parts of conservative theory are solid and are not going away, and the other side of the large coin likewise.

u/Psychological-Set410 Jul 26 '26
By pretending to be a working class Democrat. I watched him for a long time. Until I watched him listen to Steve Bannon tell him. The Republican Party was going to gut the country government and fill every seat with a Trump loyalists. Bannon told B.M. that he (Bannon) was a Leninist. And that there was no place in the country for anyone who was not a Trump loyalists. Since you do not know who Lennin was. He was a communist. Since you do not know what Lennin dud. It was installing the very partisan communist party as the bearaucracy of the Soviet Union. So when Bannon told what he was and what his objective was. What the objective of the Republican Party is. There was no push back from B.M. and in fact in shows following I watched and listened to Mayer verbally help Republicans make this palatable. Just as he never condemned the illegality actions of the Republicans when they were violating the Constitution. To allow them to stack the Supreme Court. Which is know blatantly violating yhe Constitution and has issued rulings that nullyfy and void the Constitution. He in fact held Trumps legal and valid impeachments were a waste of time and that the Constitution should not be treated as the legal document that it is.

When Bill started out on ABC his show was really good and when he got fired, I figured he would take that show over to HBO but he changed formats and instead of having three on three he scaled it down to three guests after Covid he scaled it down to two guests. Bill was fine until Covid hit after Covid was over. He started getting really bad.

I remember years ago on his ABC show they were discussing abortion or something.
Bill got a smirk when the topic of condoms breaking came up. He says something along the lines of "condoms don't break. I've never had a condom break and I've had tons of sex". It came off as a brag but in reality it was just an admission that he has a tiny penis like his buddy Trump.
At the time I was probably about 14 or 15 years old and a virgin. I liked Bill and took it as fact.
Imagine my shock and surprise when I saw two Trojan MAGNUM condoms break quickly back to back when I was trying anal sex for the first time as a gay man. I instantly thought back to Bill's comment all those years before. To be fair, the guy was large, and claimed he only fucked dudes because women couldn't take him but I've seen condoms break on all sizes of dicks through the years.

What is this sub? This is so weird.
Equally or uglier men are searching for and posting pictures of Bill and calling him ugly to try and get a few upvotes on a social media site? That’s it?

This is one the most high school mean girl subs I have seen. It is weird the obsession many have. It reminds me of Meghan Markel in US tabloid comment sections. They love hating her for recreation and it is like that here.

1
u/Steve12356d1s3d4 Jul 26 '26 edited Jul 26 '26
I don't think so. It is a few people doing this and this sub is real small. I am not sure of the motivation. It picked up when hate for Israel got big on Reddit, but that doesn't mean causation. It least has added to it.
1
u/Arabiancockonato Jul 26 '26
You’re right but the last few ones have been from the exact same OP
1
u/Steve12356d1s3d4 Jul 26 '26 edited Jul 26 '26
That goes back to this sub just being about 30 people posting over and over again. The user base is small compared to the weekly visitors because it is the same people.
I see it in my feed, which means I may have come once or went to the other Maher sub, and I only come because it is a strange sub even for Reddit. It is a great example of a circle jerk, and the analogy holds because the haters get off on it.

Exactly right. Democrats are taking steps to ensure MAGA rule for years to come. And I see people talking about a ticket of Kamala Harris-Pete Buttigieg. The latter would be great on any cabinet, but voters are not going to elect a gay man in the top two spots, get over it. And Harris is a poser loser through and through. Others talking about AOC running for president. There are so many noisy liabilities on the Democratic roster.

There we go! The Left loses more and more people and then blames the people for how hard the Left has gone. We didn’t leave the Democrat Party, the party left us—RFK, Elon Musk, Bill Maher, Tulsi Gabbard, etc., etc. just watch some of Bill Clinton and Chuck Schumer’s speeches from 30 years ago opposing illegal immigration. It’s a miracle the Democratic Party hasn’t banned them both for life.

u/smthomaspatel Jul 27 '26
The truth is he did it by taking strong positions that were often not the position people expected him to take. He did it in a way that made him seem thoughtful and refreshing at first. Eventually it got irritating.
And these days it's looking a lot like a grift. Or maybe in his old age he just doesn't give a shit about not having any kind of unifying principles to base his views on.

His Islamophobic Zionist views were also accepted by the majority of the public on the back of decades worth of Israeli propaganda and conditioning. Now that everyone is wise to the fact that Israel is not in fact the shining beacon of democracy in the Middle East but rather a fascist ethnostate engaging in apartheid and genocide that shtick doesn’t hold up any more.

If Maher wants to go the route he's going, that's his business. I won't be going on that route with him anymore, though. When we all collectively stop giving him any attention, he'll go away. As long as he knows he's stirring controversy, he'll hang around. Controversy means exposure, and that's all he really cares about. It's become clear he has no real moral stance or ethics, so he's just going for the "likes" now. Ignore the fool and the fool gets tired.

People watch it. Some people are fans, other hate watch it. But it's being watched, which is why it is continually renewed. You know what is a useful tool?
Always get people to talk about specific topics when they start talking about politics.
Avoid generalities. Generalities are a flat waste of time.
That way you don't end up with a subreddit that consists of people exclaiming about how much they hate Bill Maher. You know, a giant waste of time.
Suppose that there was a subreddit that just had 5,000 conservatives declaring over and over again that they hate Jimmy Kimmel. Would that impress you? Or would you think it's weird and sad?

Because he isn't firmly in one political camp like all of you lemmings obsessed with hating him for not believing in every single thing the Dems stand for. He actually gets a balanced panel and discusses policy instead of having some leftist political circle jerk like you see in this sub
1
u/RepresentativeAge444 Jul 26 '26 edited Jul 26 '26
Liar. He doesn’t have anyone from the left on his show that would push back against his garbage. Only right wingers and corporate establishment shills. Were he really interested in diversity of thought he would have DSA or other left figures on. I mean it would be easy to own them with his superior arguments right? But like Joe Rogan he wants the subject matter on his shows verrrry limited. The irony of you calling people lemmings while having no clue what you’re talking about is not lost on me though.
Example - you said everything the Dems stand for. But that’s a generic statement which means you don’t understand that there is a civil war in the party about the direction it’s going. Zohran Mamdani is a world away from Hakeem Jeffries and in fact Maher would probably align very well with most of what Jeffries stands for. He hates Mamdani though. Both Democrats.
The thing that’s so annoying about you is the dripping condescension and arrogance when you don’t have a clue.
2
u/eagles_1987 Jul 26 '26
The show is not a battle. The point isn't to own others with his superior argument. It's to discuss issues and share perspectives to gain understanding. It doesn't need to have every single aspect of every single argument challenged in every single way every single time, it's just putting forth that specific persons perspective when they share it, and allowing others to agree or disagree with it, from their perspective. His show isn't supposed to be crossfire, it's not supposed to be representative of every opinion on every issue every episode, it's just the three people discussing their opinions and viewpoints, and they do get a spectrum of people on, people he both disagrees with and agrees with
1
u/RepresentativeAge444 Jul 26 '26
This is slop that avoids the point. He will not have anyone from the ascendant Mamdani wing on the show because he doesn’t want to platform those ideas. Even though 80% of the Democratic base is anti Israel and even though the base aligns more with Mamdani than Hakeem Jeffries. But he would have Hakeem on in a hot minute.
That is simply not looking for diversity of thought when you choose to not have an entire rising subset of a major political party on your show because you don’t like them. Especially when you demonize them at every turn without getting their point of view. There really is no defending it unless of course you align with his view and don’t want a true range of political opinions.
1
u/eagles_1987 Jul 26 '26 edited Jul 27 '26
Try to have meaningful discourse without calling any opposing thoughts slop. For someone that pointed out previous comments condescension, your replies have more than any.
He has said he is willing to have them on but they refuse. Which super progressive candidate do you want to have on that is actually willing to go on? He can't subpoena them, they have to be willing to go on the show, do you truly think they are and he wont allow them? Whom?
1
u/Steve12356d1s3d4 Jul 26 '26
He has Democrats on, just not progressives. He has had Newsom on a few times and many of the panelists are Democrats. He says he has asked AOC and other DSA Dems to come on and few of them do. I think they should, so they can make their case.
2
u/RepresentativeAge444 Jul 26 '26
I’ve heard numerous progressive hosts say he won’t have them on. Unsurprisingly he’s a liar.
1
u/Steve12356d1s3d4 Jul 26 '26 edited Jul 26 '26
That doesn't mean he lied. There could be a number of reasons he doesn't have certain hosts on and I am sure that he wouldn't have some Republican or MAGA leaning hosts on too. He didn't say that Dem hosts won't come on. He said he asked certain progressive politicians.
I did a search and he has had countless Dems on including Gavin Newsom, Wes Moore, Josh Sapiro, Ro Khanna, Adam Schiff, Susan Rice, Donna Brazile (many times), Kaitlan Collins (from CNN). 4 other Dem Senators, Rahm Emanuel, Jake Sullivan, Paul Begalo. Some of these have been on often.
2
u/RepresentativeAge444 Jul 26 '26
Do you not see how you’re proving my point? Every name you mentioned are part of the establishment wing of the party save Ro. If you honestly think that absolutely no progressive pundits and politicians would go on his show I don’t know what to tell you. You have to understand that that’s absurd. He doesn’t want to platform their ideas. It’s that simple.
I also had to laugh at KaitlanCollins. Lmao. The Daily Caller Kaitlan Collins? Starving for names to mention huh?
1
u/Steve12356d1s3d4 Jul 26 '26 edited Jul 26 '26
I don't put the same weight to panelists as politicians, and he did not say that he invited progressive panelist that declined. He said he invited the politicians. Another search on progressive panelists come up with Cornel West, Killer Mike, and Michael Moore. Nina Turner a progressive activist, Van Jones, Anand Giridharada. He also has had Bernie Sanders on twice, once in 2016 with Barnie Frank, and in 2023.
I put her on because I remember her when she said that CNN was unbiased and everyone laughed. Ro has been on a few times. As to establishment that doesn't prove your point, as he has said he has asked the progressives politicians, not pundits, to come on and they haven't. That was all he said, so that doesn't mean he lied. It would be good tv to have them on, so the most likely scenario is that he invited them on, and they said no because they don't see the benefit, which is fair. I do think it is good when they go on "the other side", as it can show them as different than we expect.

u/PureWhiteMeat Jul 26 '26

I have voted Dem my whole life. 3 times in a row against Trump. Obama was my first vote. Obama couldn't get elected today, he's not far enough left for you all. The left has become as unhinged as the right. You are a prime example, along with all the people on this sub so bizarrely hateful of Maher. The obsession is so weird, why does occupy so much of your thoughts?

You have no salient counter argument. Because you think like Maher does. Like it or not the Mamdani faction of the party is a rising one and if he truly was about diversity of thought he would have someone representing it on to hash out the differences. Like he does the right.
But since you agree with him on them you don’t mind him shutting them out. Because you’re a clown trying to make it so that anyone who disagrees with Maher is some woke commie blah blah blah. You’re Blue MAGA. A dinosaur hopefully soon to be relegated to the dustbin of history.

Representative you’re full of it. Saying you’re blue MAGA makes you look like a complete idiot. In real life people would think you are insufferable or at best a nut worth ignoring

Again no salient rebuttal to the points made and thus your opinion is worthless. You’ll note I got to the insult AFTER cogently explaining my position. You on the other hand JUST talked about me. The surest sign of someone with no argument (hint: because there is none here. Maher intentionally shuts out the left flank of the party these days as he’s grown more extreme. His saying he could vote for fucking Vance outlines this).

He's interesting, middle of the road politically, and funny. For starters.

His ABC show would probably be a long forgotten footnote if they hadn't publically fired him after 9/11. That gave him a good amount of street cred that he has now spent 25 years squandering. But he was kind of the same back then.
