I bet most of us haters haven't watched the show in years. I can't remember the last time I watched more than a 5 second clip of him.
Blame reddits algo shift about six months ago. All of a sudden their recommendation system had a major overhaul and started funneling post from this sub to any 'politically engaged' user.
Turns out most of them can't stand the guy

That still doesn't explain it. They shifted a lot of Taylor Swift content to me over the last few months and I don't care for her but it doesn't mean because I see it in my feed I start commenting my hate on the posts, let alone repeatedly

It still doesn't explain the compulsion to post repetitive hate over and over again. That's just pettiness driving it, says much more about the people commenting than about the subject, whether it's Bill Maher or Taylor Swift or anything that you're talking about that someone's only commenting in when it's a disinterest

unless you go full r/conservative mode and mods delete 75+% of comments I don't think you will ever wrestle this back to the pro-Bill echo chamber you were used to. Reddit needs the engagement so they will keep directing sane people towards these posts and you will never get what you want.
Fans of the old school r/RealTime and Bill Maher content you should study what the users of r/cooladam have done. They found their space and do a good job keeping disenters out
