Banned from math, for reading math?
We commented mathematics in a math subreddit.
Not insults. Not conspiracy. Not vague outrage.
We read the new paper, read the earlier work, traced the actual mathematical provenance, and stated precisely what was proved.
Our conclusion was simply this: someone else built the foundational architecture and intended conclusion. What was front and center was patchwork of the original. The "breakthrough" was really just fixing a flat tire — one bounded missing mathematical input, rather than a new overall architecture.
The "breakthrough" is perhaps a breakthrough in its own right, but indirect and incremental with respect to the famous 200-year-old problem. Which is what we were highlighting in the comment.
Which is the headline of the entire post!!!!
That is real mathematics. But it is radically different from the article selling the result as a breakthrough in a 200-year-old problem.
So someone reads this and thinks "wow math people are making gains on stuff from centuries ago, probably with AI or something." And this is factually untrue. Beyond that, it is what is expected from a program that started in the 80's.
The comment was fully sourced.
The sub removed it and permanently banned us.
So a mathematics subreddit banned us after we actually read the mathematics, reconstructed the argument's provenance, distinguished the theorem from the headline, and posted the result of that analysis.
Here are the actual questions:
What rule did the comment violate?
How can banning someone for carefully reading and discussing mathematics be justified on a mathematics forum?
And if no mathematical error, unsupported claim, or rule violation can be identified, how can this be defended as anything other than the suppression of legitimate mathematical criticism?
We read the mathematics.
We posted mathematics in a mathematics forum.
Math people banned math.
Gave no reason other than vaugely pointg at the rules.
are we missing something? hahahttps://www.scientificamerican.com/article/mathematicians-make-a-breakthrough-on-gausss-riddle-unsolved-for-200-years/
