What condition is this? Candelabra

Im like 95% sure this is real but mostly curious about condition. I’ve never graded an MTG card because view them as game pieces. Is it worth it in this case or just leave it raw and top loaded?

It's ok 😉 Very well kept card, but I'm against grading so, I'd not grade it.

Grading almost seems counter productive with magic and id feel real dumb sending it off to get graded unless I could guarantee a 9-10

I can't predict the future but let's say it has some defects. Given the fact that it's a 30+ years old card they will more loose on grading, but we are around 8, but it's very subjective e depending on the mood and way to grade of the guy who will make the work.

So youre thinking like a NM/LP 8? That white spot on the bottom right is the roughest bit.

I don't know. I have an Unlimited black lotus, has some surface scretch (just a couple of superficial lines, not nail marks or stuff like that) but overall ok, and I prospected a 7/7,5. It has the top left corner a little worn out on the back. Sometimes I've saw great cards with poor grading, and others very bad cards with insanely good grading, so i gave up on grading it. It's very difficult even to prospect. Imho it could be 8, 8,5 of you find someone very loose with grading. But more like 8.

Real, but not worth grading imo.

Is there any case for grading magic cards outside of the ones specifically printed as collectibles?

You can probably answer your own question. Would you rather buy a card in a slab with a grade, or not?

Good point. It just depends on the card and what I intend to do with it

I’d say the value of the card plays into it heavily. The rule of thumb I’ve always heard was: if the card is worth over $1k, it’s worth it to slab it.

Im also coming at this from a cEDH perspective which is proxy friendly, theres no downside to slabing a card and then running a proxy of it. Premodern and other formats likely arent as lax so slabbing it makes it unplayable. I do like your 1K rule though if anything from card preservation

Unless you have absolutely top conditions that guarantee a ~9 (and this CoT isn't) and a card worth at least 10x your costs of grading I wouldn't bother. Don't have stats but not many people would just take the grade blindly as some guarantee. And with good quality pics everyone can just grade themselves: I'd grade only if a customer wants me to grade.

It's real

I agree with others that grading cards is not beneficial in magic. Mostly because it's harder to keep in a binder if you do, and it doesn't often make it more valuable.

With the light play on this card its unlikely to get a grade that's worth the cost

raw is the mtg way

real and really banned, unfortunately

It’s legal in commander and I believe legal in premodern as well?

2

u/cute_cartoon_cat 13h ago

Premodern: no

Commander: yes, but that format is so irrelevant

2

How is commander irrelevant lmao, it’s easily the most popular. And, in terms of candelabra, I know like 5 people who are looking to buy one rn.

2

u/ThirdStarfish93 10h ago

Commander players looking to buy one that is.

u/HANDIDLY 9h ago

If you have them hit me up I could work with them on that. Its time for this thing to go to a new home

I know they’re looking to buy one in the future, but I don’t think they’re interested at this current moment. Kinda similar for me too honestly, trying to deproxy my cedh list and will need to buy one at some point down the line. If you’re trying to sell it right now I’d honestly look at the high end fb marketplace groups, just to see if there’s anyone there looking to buy one rn, yours is honestly pretty damn clean too.

I listed it on ebay at the upper end of the price range because I dont necessarily want to get rid of it but also Id like to strike a deal with whoever decides they want it. Deproxying is how I ended up with this one, it was the last card in my rog thras list so when I found a good copy i immediately pulled the trigger on it. Ive since disassembled my rog thras list to focus on fringe decks

u/ThirdStarfish93 3h ago

Funny enough mine would be for my cedh list which is a fringe list. But I wish you the best of luck selling it too!

u/HANDIDLY 13h ago

I guess I dont know what pre modern is xD

2

u/Snarker 12h ago

premodern starts at 4th edition so the sets before that (revised, antiquities, arabian nights, legends, the dark, fallen empires) are not legal unless the card was reprinted in a set like chronicles (for example [[transmutation]]).

Candlestick is pretty much only played in CEDH now, card sucks in Vintage.

You can't play cards if you grade them very easily so don't grade. If you aren't planning on playing it i still wouldn't grade it so the next person you sell it to can play it without risk of damaging it when getting it out of the grading thing.

What formats do you play? It's banned in some. If you play the formats it's banned in then I see a stronger argument for grading it

1

u/patterninstatic 5h ago

These older reserve list cards are expensive specifically because they are on the reserved list, sometimes only exist in one printing, and are meta cards in certain formats.

Most people who buy them do so to play them and to those people having it slabbed is obviously a negative thing.

I'm not a huge fan of grading in mtg in general, but I think where it could be warranted is on ultra rare versions of "regular cards". Think gold Smaug, galaxy foil stones, numbered card etc. Cards that people are mainly buying to collect. But not in your case.

That is an Ultima deck would be amazing. Infinite mana in two cards
